Manila Galleon 1988 ... in WWIII.

A Harpoon Commander's Edition scenario for the EC2003 Battle for Western Pacific Battleset and the HCDB-130818 1980-2015 Era Platform Database.

Image: USS Trípoli (LPH-10), undated, but clearly after 1972(installation of Sea Sparrow. Credited to Dennis Stephenson SMC USN Ret in navysource.org, and showed on Wikipedia as public domain because taked by an US serviceperson on duty.

This scenario is designed to be played with the US-Philippine/Blue side or with by the Soviet-Vietnamese/Red side, to avoid spoilers is better to play a few times first the US/Blue side, and only after the Soviet/Red side. In part is pretended as an introductory scenario, but worth of play for experienced Harpoon players. Second scenario of a series inspired in old boardgames of the 1970's and 1980's, but modified mainly to introduce the accumulated knowledge about weapons and forces deployment after the Cold War end.

In the wake of the Black Sea naval incident of 22 February 1988, and with other clashes droved to WWIII and after the neutralization of a Soviet convoy to Philippines with support of his old Vietnamese allies on the South China Sea,carrying weapons and on board the new revolutionary government to be imposed on Philippines, the US and Allied forces need to keep a firm operations base in Phllippines. As consequence, three Allied convoys with amphibious and transport ships are sailing to Manila to reinforce Philippines against any new Soviet attempt, and to keep at bay the Soviet-driven local insurgence. After the first clash the remaining Soviet Long Range Aviation elements in Vietnam were retired far North, but also most of the 3rd Tactical Fighter Wing based at Clark AB is displaced North, to protect Japan and South Korea. The main risk for the Allied convoys reinforcing Philippines will be the Soviet submarines. The reduced US and Allied ASW forces (with old and odd types of planes and ships on his force composition like a remembrance

of the ABDA force 46 years before) in theater have the task of protect the sail and unload of the convoys near Subic Bay.

Modification: lacking scenario tags added some six hours after the release.

Modification 20 July 2014: added a missing AAW patrol to the USS Trípoli group, little text description change adding the appellative "Peugeots" to the Clark-based 3rd TFW.

Modification 20 July 2014 late:

- Changes to loadouts in CH-53E, CH-46E and UH-1N on Trípoli and Peleliu groups, to avoid this issue of "spontaneous" and absurd AEW patrols: http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/tracker/issue-79-formation-air-patrols-created-by-the-game-engine/?gopid=383&do=findComment&comment=383

- Also minor changes to some submarines and surface groups courses to do more probably the enemy groups encounters.

Modification 20 July 2014 very late:

- Peleliu group course shortened, now is theorically possible for the Allied player a Total Victory ever. Before on some too far random starting points for Peleliu group, the group can not reach the destination and time on station goals on the scenario stated time.

- Also minor changes to some submarines and surface groups courses to do more probably the enemy groups encounters.

Confirmed in two different Facebook chats with 3rd TFW veterans: the USAF Aggressors F-5E Tiger II were combat capable and combat ready.

Hi Enrique,

I´ve begun playing it. my forces are deployed and now I´m waiting for the Hurricane.

Oops...a bad start: One of my SAGs detected a Foxtrot SSK. Thought this would be easy. Instead of sinking this old diesel sub, all my torps missed and then a torp broadside launched by the Foxtrot sunk two ships! Seems like I had totally forgotten about how nasty the modern HUCE AI is and how tough subs are in HUCE.

Things are running well at the moment: Sunk a first hostile SAG, killed the Foxtrott. Aan AWACS would be real welcome but such is life - no AWACS available.

  • Author

The scarce AWACS are in Japan, protecting vital actions in Japan and South Korea (and the others in Europe), only thirty few to cover the whole world. For a secondary theater as Philippines many times we can't count with AWACS.

With or without AWACS...I´ll win it! :)

Just grilled another red SAG.

Another SAG sunk. The body count of hostile ships has reached 14. There have been no attacks since the very first sub attack. Can it be so easy? My vessels have come rather close to the Island and are under heavy CAP and ASw protection.

Caution! Another pair of Osa missile boats suddenly pops up on the screen. This is close, they are not far from shooting range. Two Orions do the job.

Arrgghh! Pride goeth. My Barbel SSN has a torp running its way. Counterfire one torp.

First my SSN dies, then the silent aggressor - a Kilo class sub.

Situations like these create the unique HC atmosphere: "Easy to learn, hard to master!" The GUI is super easy, all very smooth. But the modern HUCE AI is really mean, worlds apart from the first HC AIs back to the 80ies.
