While the discussion is already kind of old, I would love to see this feature request implemented. As others have written before, there could be multiple stages in which a SAR capability is introduced into Harpoon: Down pilot with special capabilities Downed planes may generate downed pilots To summarize the thread, the first item would need to be land and sea capable. It should not be detected by the owning side until in a 'beeper' range. Upon arrival of a SAR equipped unit, the downed pilot should be picked up. This may or may not reflect in a victory condition fulfillment at first, though it would be nice to have this at a later stage at least. The second item is probably much more difficult to code. Essentially this means one unit (plane) may be 'transformed' into one or multiple others (downed pilots). Once this has happened, the already tested approach from the first item is used. On victory conditions for dynamically created downed pilots, maybe this could be done like the damaged percentage. A percentage of overall downed pilots need to be rescued.
  2. Can't really help with the original question. Only that gimp 3 should have support for 16 bit per channel images, see this FAQ answer. Torsten

Instead of saying 'Total victory condition' and 'Minimum victory condition' in the scenario editor I'd like to give it a label like '[T] Bases to destroy', '[M] Bases to damage', where T and M depicts it's a total or minimum victory condition. Might be useful in complex scenarios with many victory conditions. It's really a very minor request. On the automatic evasion on SAM and air to air missiles, I understand it's hard to implement. On the other side I found that the system in the Downtown boardgame works nicely. For a SAM launch the rule is: See if missile hits (14+ on 2d10), then check SAM defense (regardless if missile hits or not) of air plane. SAM defense depends if plane has RWR aboard or not. The result of SAM defense can be no effect (so any hit would go through), SAM avoidance and Miss. In case of SAM avoidance the ordnance is jettisoned and the flight displaced slightly (we're talking hexes here . So maybe a system of 'SAM or air to air missile detection', 'reaction', 'avoidance' or 'no effect' or 'miss' might be handy. On the other hand it might be just to far away from the Harpoon rules.

Here my wishlist, in no particular order: SAR option, shot down planes may generate pilots (undetected) that can later be picked up by helos Defense zones for neutral powers, when red or blue fly/sail there they will be engaged by green SAM launch increases the chance of a visual sighting of the launcher A bomb sight value for planes to differentiate their effectiveness in delivering iron bombs Laden vs empty speed difference in planes New icons for bridges, buildings, etc. Option for collateral damage to nearby units/structures when bombing Automatic evasive maneuvers by pilots when engaged by SAMs or air to air missiles Damaged planes Buddy bombing, increased accuracy when FAC/friendly fighter is close to target Area of operation of AI aircraft in scenario creation White phosphorous option for ARM, e.g. increased change in visual detection of launcher after ARM impact Labels for victory conditions in the editor Jettison option for planes Refueling of in flight helos from ships

  7. Thanks for the play through report! I'm wondering if I should add a cruiser before Haiphong to the scenario, to increase the likeliness of MiG detections. Historically this was done with ships on Red Crown and PIRAZ duty. On the other side it takes away quite a bit of the tension, as now you never know where the next MiG will show up...

I'm doing some research on a larger Vietnam era scenario during the Rolling Thunder campaign[65-68]. I've learned that destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin were used for SAR missions and was wondering where the omni present helicopters are coming from. A friendly person on the consim world forum for Downtown has pointed me to this document: Navy SAR Vietnam report. On page 3 you can see a helo that is refueld in flight from a destroyer. Is this possible in Harpoon? Or shall I add it to my growing wishlist
  9. I use the new launcher, for download here at harpgamer. With this I organize my scenarios by database. I have a 65-80 folder with Rene's db and scenarios fitting it, and another one called HCCW for the db by CV32 and scenarios for it. Instead of starting HUCE directly I will use the launcher and point it to the database and scenario/savegame I want to use.
  10. Thanks for the recent update! I just noticed that it says Hanoi, Vietnam South instead of Hanoi, Vietnam North.
  11. I'm still using the HUCE edition as released, no beta patches or anything applied. If the close range gunnery is different now, it should also affect my Vietnam scenarios ... I find AAA to be really effective there, having to fly at medium or high really most of the time until it's been taken care of.
  12. I just gave it a try - very nice change of pace from the almost 'instant action' modern scenarios. I had a tough time with the Arado 163 seaplanes, they killed my patrols over the north sea left and right. Nevertheless I spotted two destroyers, Bismarck and Prinz Eugen pretty early. I've sent the CV group around Victorious to an intercept and after some more skirmishes with the Arados located them. I launched all of my torpedo bombers in groups of 4 Swordfish's against the battle group. Unfortunately all were shot down by Arados and AAA before any torpedo was launched. Somewhat frustrated I stopped the scenario then - guess I have to re-work my WWII tactics! I noticed that two bases in England are located on top of each other. I think ACa and ABa?

This scenario has been made for the 65-80db and Indochina battleset. Operation Weaver This scenario is fictional, taking place at the height of the Vietnam War two months after the infamous Tet offensive. Best played on Blue side. After the Tonkin Gulf incident hostilities between the US, allied to South Vietnam, and North Vietnam increased. In 1965 an aerial interdiction campaign named "Rolling Thunder" against targets in North Vietnam was started. While frequently suspended for bombing halts, the campaign went on continuously. The fictional operation weaver is part of this interdiction campaign. Defenses over North Vietnam increased dramatically over time. While at first only AAA and MiG-17s were found, over the years SAMs and modern MiG-21s became real threats to US operations. Target areas in North Vietnam were divided into 'route packages'. The subject of operation weaver is to strike in route package VIb, namely Haiphong. This important harbor and infrastructure hub was off limits to Rolling Thunder for most of the time. For the North Vietnamese the supplies and replacement parts coming in from Haiphong are very important, hence defenses are tight around the city. Subject of the operation is to find targets on sea and on land and inflict maximum damage to them. The aircraft from two carriers cruising in the Tonkin Gulf at an area known as 'Yankee Station' are available. Depending on external factors additional CAP and jamming aircraft from Da Nang might be available. The North Vietnamese side has an integrated air defense system composed of SAMs, AAA and MiGs available. Often the North Vietnamese fighters will be able to sneak up to US aircraft and jump them.

  15. I like that idea. Right now I use the excellent Launcher to run scenarios for different databases. It requires only a few clicks to change scenario or db. I wonder if an external launcher, like the one Tony implemented, could do the job. A scenario would need a 'hint' file that points it to the right database. The database could be identified by name or maybe a signature. Not sure if the database structure contains a good field for such a signature? While a hash for the db could be used, it is hard to maintain with fast moving databases.
  16. Thanks for the update of the HCCW! Some more wishlist items: F-105D in flight re-fueling SA-2b SAM for NV Thanks.
  17. The loadout has the AGM-65B, so for historical correctness they should be equipped with another armament.
  18. Scenario worked fine for me with latest 65-80db. I did play slightly a-historical and opened the fight, shooting down some Fishbeds that were closing in on my carrier. I also think NV didn't have MiG-21s in 64, but would need to look that up. Is there a way to restrict the red air force from flying towards to the carrier?

A small scenario during the 1972 Easter Offensive of the NVA. Blue airforce is tasked to destroy a small number of tanks, while red airforce should hinder them. One question remains open: The A-7 Corsairs have Maverick in their loadout, not sure if this was eligible in 1972.

  24. Ooops, I actually did that. I first added some US units, saved, updated the database, then added the DRV units and then tried it. Will edit one scenario with one db from now on, but hope the scenario can be used with an updated db later on. Otherwise it would be very hard to do a scenario against a moving target.
  25. I've created a small scenario taking place in Vietnam and it gives me an error when starting it. It is designed to be used with db 65-80. Is there any way I can remove that error?
