based on an original HC scenario by Mark Gellis Fish populations around the world have declined due to global warming, overfishing, and other factors. Japan has responded to dwindling catches by fishing closer and closer to parts of the Russian coast where fish are still relatively abundant. It is not clear whether Japanese fishing boats has actually violated Russian territorial waters or, if they have, how often it has happened, but Russia believes its territory is being violated. The situation has become very tense. Russian fishermen have fired shots at Japanese fishing boats. Japan has responded by sending armed escorts to accompany fishing fleets. Russia has declared this an unacceptable provocation.

The Russian military has been experiencing a loss of discipline and an increase of desertions and mutinies among its ranks brought on by little or no pay and loss of morale. Of late, several older ex-Soviet warships that were laid up prior to decommissioning have turned up missing. More disturbing is the fact that the ammunition for these warships stored in a nearby warehouse, prior to their destruction have also turned up missing. In another development, Oil has been discovered in and around the coast of northern Greenland and several oilrigs and a base camp has been set up. Contact has been lost with the whole operation. It is feared that an unknown force has seized the facilities. NATO has been tasked to investigate.

Tuned for H3ANW 3.7.0. The H3DB follows an only add, never delete philosophy so that scenarios will continue to function with futures releases of the database. H3DB was originally derived from the HUDII DB

  5. Navy to name aircraft carrier after Ford From: The Associated Press http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070103/ap_on_...pe/ford_carrier WASHINGTON - The Navy will name its next aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford in honor of the president who was buried Wednesday in his home town of Grand Rapids, Mich., officials said. The Navy had not planned to make the announcement yet, but Donald H. Rumsfeld, the former defense secretary who served in the Ford administration, divulged the news during his eulogy at the funeral. "How fitting it would be that the name Gerald R. Ford will patrol the high seas for decades to come in defense of the nation he loved so much," he said. Later at the Pentagon the Navy confirmed that it would make an official announcement "in a few weeks." It said it was still working on details of the ceremony with members of the Ford family. Ford served in the Navy during World War II
  6. Scenario 2 The USS Ramage is operating 150 miles off the coast of Hispaniola on rute to Roosevelt Roads Puerto Rico. Although an early Burke class DDG, with only a helo pad and no hangar, she is ferrying one SH60 helo to Puerto Rico. The helo is aloft on atraining mission armed with 8 AGM-114 missiles and 7.62 mm machineguns when her ESM operators pick up a signal from a susrface search radar nearby. Radar is energized and the crew picks up 2 surface contacts. One surface contact is pproaching the other at high speed from astern. The helo then goes to ID the contacts. One contact turns out to be a fishing boat. The helo then heads to the approaching contact which appears to be an unknown trawler. The Seahawk orbits both vessels until the unknown trawler opens fire with a large gun on the helicopter! The helo is hit and suffers minor damage spewing smoke and quickly returns fire once before attempting to land on the Ramage. The two AGM-114 missiles hit the trawler destroying its radar and starting a fire in the engine room. The trawler is undeterred and continues to head for the fishing boat. Meanwhile, the Ramage accelarates to full speed and heads for the action. The trawler comes within extreme range of the Ramage's forward gun. The Ramage open fire with its gun, quickly sinking the trawler in under 3 minutes.
  7. Pirates of the Caribbean Military juntas have taken control in Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela. These juntas, closely allied with each other, are ruling their countries with an iron fist. In addition, they have given safe haven to pirates and dealers in the drug trade for a portion of the proceeds. Representatives of organized terrorist groups have also been spotted in the area. Scenario 1—Lighting the match Lookouts on the new US Coast Guard Maritime Security Cutter have sighted a trawler full of refugees from Cuba. The Cutter initiates a radio call to the vessel. Meanwhile the trawler is being pursued by a Cuban Osa class missile boat. The Osa has the trawler on radar but not the Cutter because of its stealth features. As it approaches the trawler, it picks up a radio transmission to the trawler from an American vessel in the area. Sensing that the trawler may escape, the Osa requests permission from its base to fire. The Cuban government, wanting to make an example of the refugees, authorizes weapons free. The Osa fires two ancient SSMs at the trawler. The first antique missile misses wide while the second smashes into the trawler completely destroying it with its large warhead. The first missile flies on heading directly towards the Coast Guard Vessel. A few miles away, the Maritime Security Cutter detects the incoming missile. The captain orders flank speed and maneuvers the ship in order to present the lowest possible cross section for the incoming missile. As the missile approaches, the cutter starts launching chaff rockets in order to confuse the missile. The missile’s 40 year old seeker is easily spoofed by the chaff and cleanly misses the Coast guard vessel. The near miss as well as the attack on the refugees triggers a major international incident and all regional forces are put on high alert with the United States claiming that the Cubans have launched a missile at one of its ships. The Cubans have no comment. However, the Haitians and Venezuelans have voiced their strong support for their ally Cuba. This Scenario was created and played using the CIC Warfare Plotter
  8. I'm sorry for your loss Pete. Fred
  9. Proceeding to the SEAL dropped zone, the Virginia detected a captured Norwegian oil platform. If the primary mission is successful, her SEALS would be retaking the platform...but first, the primary mission objective, to disable the air defenses at Bardufoss must be acomplished. The Virginia reached position at 0300 hours and deployed the SEALS. An hour later, the SEALs were in position. NATO's suspicions were correct, earlier in the day, the Russian planes based there attempted to strike Bodo airbase in the south. The strike was defeated and only a handful of survivors returned. However, NATO intel reported aircraft movement from the Russian bases on the Kola penninsula. The SEALs were witnessesing replacement aircraft arriving at Bardufoss. In additiion, another surprise awaited them. A company of highly trained Russian troops was on high alert at the base when the two squads of SEALs arrived. In the fighting that ensued the two squads of SEALs managed to reduce the enemy company by 40% although at a heavy cost. The two squads of SEALs lost 80% of their force and the order was given to withdraw. The NATO air strike would have to be replanned.
  10. Pete: I'm working on an abstract land warfare system based on die die rolls ("Risk" style) still trying to work out the bugs and get a balance between abstraction and realism. Hits are determined by a successful attack die roll or are avoided by a successful defense die roll. Each hit reduces the strength or dp of the unit by a factor of one. Combat continues until both sides choose to stop or a side is destroyed. The goal is to simulate roughly what is happening on land realizing this is a naval warfare simulation Again, still a work in progress.
  11. After sinking, the Russian Surface Action Group (save for a Sovremmennyy destroyer), the USS Virginia proceeds into the fjord. Its misison is to land SEAL teams to disable the air defenses of the captures Bardufoss airbase in preparation for an airstrike. Acoustic conditions, related to water depth made sonar almost unusable as she entered the fjord. There was an Akula 2 class submarine at the entrance, but the 2 simply did not detect each other. The original scenario which I designed for HC had a minefield in the fjord but it was omitted this time since I need to refresh my memory on the mine rules. Virginia moved deep into the fjord and a few miles into the drop off zone, detected a very faint contact which was marked as detected on the plotting board. Sonar conditions were horrible and it took over 30 minutes before a decent solution was worked out...although no ID for the target was ever made. However, no mention of friendly subs were contained in the op orders so it was swiftly dispatched by 2 Mk48s (I dedicated this kill to Tony who made the plotting board with which I played these scenarios). The contact turned out to be a Russian Kilo only 1000 meters away! With the way clear, Virginia proceeds to the drop zone for the SEALS. I think the mines would have really complicated this scenario.
  12. Good point Pete. When I play solitaire, I always think back to my expereiences playing HC as a guide. Playing H4...I think there is more of a "fog of war" and a feelling of immersion which I like. Still, if there is something I'm not sure about...I ask myself "could this happen in HC?" Heck, I use the loadouts and ranges provided by Brad in the HC database for my air ops in H4. Saves a lot of time number crunching! You should try the new ploting board it makes gaming a lot easier....also lends itself to play by e-mail.
  13. Russian Intel was as follows: NATO SAM systems are confirmed to be deployed in and around runway facility of target airbase. Orders are to eliminate any radar sources at the base. Rule 5.3.10 states that ARM missiles "...home in on the electromagnetic emisisons given of fby the traget radar." Furthermore "...the launching unit must be within ESM range of the emititng radar, as well as within the missile's range." So, this coupled with my HC experience, had me do the following: Flew to within 80 miles of the base, listened for emissions, found some and fired. I should've waited until the rest of the strikers were closer in though. But I'll have another chance as reinforcements are arriving. Hope this helps.
