February 7, 200719 yr The most recent Naval Sitrep (#31 I believe) has the Admiraty Trilogy's new air rules. I read through them and studied the examples last night, and look to run through some harpoon era air engagements over the next few days. Has anyone else read or tried these yet?
February 8, 200719 yr I haven't seen them, Pete, but I did hear that you got some recognition in the latest issue. Congrats ! You're famous ! The new air rules are intriguing .. looking forward to a quick rundown and application of the rules by you.
February 9, 200719 yr Pete, that SitRep has a whole lot of good things to think about and to try! I read the article and think it is a huge step towards simplification of air to air warfare and also look forward to your putting the new rules to test.
April 18, 200718 yr Author After back-burnering this for a while due to some relatively greater interest elsewhere; "ok guess!", the wet conditions down where Gulf Strike is set up has prompted me to revisit the new air rules. I now have been reading through the new rules with an obvious emphasis on the modern end of the spectrum. I have quickly realized that there is a new twist called "Damage Values" for each specific aircraft. Never one to use what found in the article like the J-10, MiG-29, and F-4 to name a few, I requested and recieved data, including the new damage values for the F/A-18C/D and Su-34. I look to gaming through a few dogfights (gun and missile), as well as BVR missile engagements to see if I can competantly understand the new procedures. I'll report my findings...
April 18, 200718 yr Author Quick dogfight with AAM's between two competent F/A-18C/D's and two competent Indian MiG-29K's. Due to speed, the dogfight is taking place with a 6nm area. The MiG is armed with R-77's, the F/A-18's with AIM-120's, and AIM-9x's. Due to manuever considerations, the Mig's being higher, it attacks first. 5.0 (Indian maneuver rating)-4.5 (US maneuver rating)+3 (4th Gen missile)+1 (Helmet Mounted Sight)+0 (speed difference)+0 (pilot skill difference) = "Maneuver Difference" of 4.5. R-77 has an 8.0 rating at its shorter range of 9.2nm. 8.0 -4.5 (US maneuver rating) - 0.5 (US 3rd Gen Decoys) = a "Missile Index" of 3.0. Cross referencing Maneuver Difference and Missile Index the two Indian MiG's have a 41% pk. Die rolls were 32 and 63 for one F-18 downed. The remaining F-18 takes its shot with an AIM-120. The F-18's AIM-120 pk is 30%. Die roll was 33 a miss. For giggles, I checked to see if the surviving F-18 pilot was better off maneuvering for a gun shot. Appears that the -0.5 manuever difference and the 3.9 gun rating, cross referenced with the MiG-29's "20 Damage Rating" resulted in a pk of 35%. While only one iteration, it appears that pilot training is the biggest variable. US/western pilots need to maintain their qualitative edge. J-10's, F-4E's, and Mig-21 still await combat.
April 19, 200718 yr Author Today's lunchtime air engagement royale involved 2x "competent" PRC J-10 engaging in a "dogfight with AAM's" versus 2x "experienced" US F/A-18D's. I was also considering missile failure. For 4th Gen missiles, failure is on a "0" D10 roll prior to rolling for a "hit". However, there were no missile failures this engagement. Since both aircraft have identical maneuver ratings, and surprise was not achieved, we are instructed to flip a coin. In this case each side rolled a D10. PRC rolled higher so they get position and shoot first. 4.5 (PRC Man Rating) - 4.5 (US man rating) +3 (R-77Gen Mod) = 3 Maneuver Difference 8 (R-77 ATA) - 4.5 (US Man Rating) - 0.5 (US 3rd Gen D) = 3 Missile Index. Cross referencing the Maneuver Difference and Missile Index, shifting left and up for PRC being one level below in experience results in a pK of 30. D10's of 19 and 49. 1x F/A-18D goes down - again. The remaining F/A-18D calculates as follows: 4.5 -4.5, +3, +1 (Helmet Mounted Sight - est 2003) = 4 Maneuver Difference 8 (AIM-120) - 4.5 (PRC man rating) - 0.5 (PRC 3rd Gen D) = 3 Missile Index Cross referencing the Maneuver Difference and the Missile Index, shifting right and down for US being one experience level higher results in a pK of 49. D10 = 47. J-10 down. The two remaining opponents roll for position, due to identical maneuver ratings. US gains position this turn. Calculations are the same. US rolls 64. Miss. PRC pilot decides discretion is sometimes the better part of valor and rolls to escape the dogfight. Basically this roll, in this situation is a single D10. 6, -1 for the lower experience of the PRC pilot. D10 = 3. J-10 escapes, both aircraft return to base.
June 14, 200718 yr I have quickly realized that there is a new twist called "Damage Values" for each specific aircraft. Damage values, has someone been leaking secret CIC information to the competition? Dewayne
May 26, 200916 yr Author Well I decided to re-familiarize myself with the "new" trilogy air rules, and after soliciting aircraft and pilot competencies on irc last night, first up is mid to late 70's F-14A vs MiG-21 (exact model I'll post later), both pilots "experienced). After doing some caluclation today during lunch I was very surprised in that the the MiG's AA-2c Improved Atoll had no effect versus the F-14, and that the F-14's AIM-54C had only a .14 Pk. If it survives as the F-14 moves first given its speed advantage, the MiG resorts to its internal gun which provides for the best chance for a hit at .20. Should get a handful of "dogfights" in tonight. Would like to add some of the conditional modifiers like surprise, head on attacks, tail attacks, etc.
May 27, 200916 yr Author Ok it is an F-14A, 37 damage points, 4x AIM-54A, 2x AIM-7M, and AIM-9E versus an Mig-21MF Fishbed J, 18 damage points, and 4x R-3R AA-2c Advanced Atolls. And while the Mig's GP-9 Gun Pack GSh-23 has a 20% pH, it is only a pK of 5%. Looks like a lot of circling around waiting for a tone.
May 27, 200916 yr What are the numbers for the F-14's gun? (And why is the Tomcat driver allowing it to get to gun range? )
May 27, 200916 yr Author The F-14A's 20mm Vulcan has a cannon ATA of 4.0. The MiG-21MF Fishbed J's GSh-23 has a cannon ATA of 2.0. The F-14A has the first shot due to its maneuver rating being higher than the MiG's, 4.0 to 3.5. As it turned out tonight, the F-14A declared an AIM-54A missile attack, but failed the missile failure roll. The MiG missed its gun shot. In the second minute of the dogfight (round) the F-14 pickles of another AIM-54A which impacts the MiG. Using 8.2.1 Combat Damage, the MiG suffers Heavy Damage. I'd assume that the pilot bailed out.
May 28, 200916 yr Author Last night's action - Three experienced Indian AA-12 armed MiG-21bis UPG with Helmet Mounted Sight vs. three competent Pakistani Sidewinder armed (AIM-9L and AIM-9P) F-16A/B (Block15). MiG-21bis UPG manual rating: 3.5; 3rd Generation Jammers & Decoys. F-16 manual rating: 4.0; 2nd Generation Decoys. Generation 4 AA-12 ATA: 8.0 Generation 2 AIM-9L ATA: 4.0 In the end, the Pakistani’s get position and shoot with AIM-9L pK of .10. The Indians return fire with AA-12 pK of .60. The first minute (round) has 2x Falcons shot down at no cost to the Indians. The second minute (round) was a lot of jockeying for position as the 3x MiGs were now competing with each other for “the shot” while the Pakistani was trying to stay alive looking for his chance to skedaddle. In the third and final minute of this dogfight, the valiantly fighting Pakistani was finally overwhelmed by the three Indian MiG’s. This day went to the Indian Air Force.
May 28, 200916 yr Author (And why is the Tomcat driver allowing it to get to gun range? ) Because I'm familiarizing myself with the "new" dogfighting rules. I'm sure they could have BVR'd them at will.
May 28, 200916 yr Author (And why is the Tomcat driver allowing it to get to gun range? ) Because I'm familiarizing myself with the "new" dogfighting rules. I'm sure they could have BVR'd them at will. Warhorse64, et al. In order to give it a try I allowed 2x F-14A’s, cued by AEW support, to engage 6x MiG-21MF Fishbed J’s with their 4x AIM-54A each “at range” (<=60nm). 2x AIM-54A’s failed their lunch roll. 1x AIM-54A hit, destroying a MiG. 5x AIM-54A missed their target outright. Then followed the dogfight similar to the other night, however now primarily fought by the Tomcats with AIM-7M (2 per F-14) and MiG’s were still attempting gun shots. In two minutes/rounds of dog fighting, all four AIM-7M’s were expended for no gain. I think that the MiG’s are still rolling for hits (no hits during the time frame here) So far, 2x F-14A and 5x MiG-21MF’s are zipping around the fir ball with the F-14A’s looking to perhaps attempt to leave the fight as they are down to their last four total AIM-9L’s. MTF
May 30, 200916 yr 2x AIM-54A’s failed their lunch roll.1x AIM-54A hit, destroying a MiG. 5x AIM-54A missed their target outright. That doesn't sound surprising to me- as I've mentioned elsewhere, the AIM-54 was designed for bombers, not "Supersonic Sportsplanes".
