While perusing the Harpoon flames on Usenet I ran across a post by a gentleman sharing his large ruleset for WWII warfare. Honestly I've only read the Operational level Naval rules but they are well enough assembled and thought out and I feel confident in suggesting them as at least a curiosity to the paper gamers here. http://ww2thebigone.webs.com/ the Usenet post (that topic always gets me to read!) http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.ib...9d951d72bec77d#

My favourite aircraft (solely based on childhood impressions) is either the Tornado or the F-15E Strike Eagle, depending on what day it is. For kicks i just worked through a comparison of an F-15 and an F-18 attacking a soviet Kresta to see what differences there would be, if any. The result was: there were lots of differences! Both the F-15 and F-18 approached the Kresta at Medium height. The F-18 Detected the Kresta before being detected itself Fired its Harpoon from a range outside the range of the Krestas air defenses The Harpoon was very difficult for the Krestas air defenses to shoot down The Harpoon does much more damage than the F-15's Mavericks. …

** I posted this at Matrix, but I thought the more eyes the better. If someone can lead me to the right spot, I would be grateful. I am trying to put something together and I need some help. Somehow, I would like to come up with the produced numbers and versions of these items. I have read somewhere that 2000 of the first edition were produced. Was there another edition? This one I assume had higher production numbers. there were no add-ons to this I believe. There were 2 versions, a 1991 update, plus a whole lot of additions etc. This is the big one and I would like to know the numbers for all the addons also. Does …

Land based general attack table Has anyone put any time/effort into determining damage points for items not included on the General Attack Table on page 6-20? I'm looking to put together an extended target type list. Has anyone got any ideas for potential extra targets and their damage points, armour level, size and critical hit results? Throw your ideas out there for potential targets, their damage points, armour level, size, critical hit results and other info that might be important. I'll put together some of my own, and comment on others rationalising of targets as they go up.

Scenario: An F-15 approaching and firing on, a French Tourville class destroyer. I had no expectations for how this might play out. The only reason for choosing a Tourville was because it was a Destroyer and I’d get to see how effectively a randomly picked destroyers radar and air-defences worked. Detection ranges The Tourvilles Air Search radar is able to pick up a medium sized target (F-15) at 146nm (low altitude and above). Radar LOS is 96nm. The F-15 is flying at 650kts and medium height. Radar LOS to the Tourville is 106nm. The F-15 radar range is 70nm. The F-15 flies at medium altitude with its search radar on, since it is not worried about …

I'm currently reading The Iron Pirate by Douglas Reeman (excellent book so far) and have been inspired to use a big battleship. I've chosen the Iowa on page A-23 of H4.1. Some questions about her: 1) Weapons lists 2F/A(3)3 Mk7 406mm/50//2 Mk 13. Does this mean there are two lots of 3 x 406mm guns both forward and aft (front and back)? So thats 6 guns forward and 6 aft. I assume aft guns cannot fire forward and vice verca. Why is Mk7 listed and then a Mk13? 2) 2P&B/PQ/2S&SB/S&SQ®6 Mk28 127mm/38//4 Mk 25 What does the PQ and SQ stand for? I assume ® is rear? Can a port side gun fire to starboard? I dont mean that as a silly question, can the …

Taken from two posts over on the Harpoon4 folder over at CONSIMWORLD: "Persian Incursion" looks like the next Adm. Trilogy release for Harpoon... might even make it for Historicon. Contents: 120 page scenario book, map, 1/2 sheet of counters, 2 decks of cards, box and dice. The first time I'll have a reason to send review copies to the Washington Post and NY Times. Larry is currently digging up another big shot to write the introduction. Status: Now in the Art Dept. Readers of The Naval Sitrep issue 37 got a preview, and one or two scenarios were played at Origins last summer. * Larry's answer to my questions about Persian Incursion: "Persian Incursion wi…

Issue #37 arrived today. Just in time to rebuild some more harpoon interest prior to the upcoming MBX. Includes gaming the Iranian air defense. It vaguely reminds me of my attempt to tweak the Kola flow chart a number of years ago, but obviously greater thought, effort and research went into this. Wished for an update on Harpoon and how it is developing in line with the Trilogy harmonization process.

Tensions between the United Kingdom and France have crept close to breaking point (again?). The French destroyer Aconit has entered waters it has been told to keep out of. The UKs response is to send 2 Sea Harriers to ward her off. The two Sea Harriers approach at 450kts and very low altitude. Initial range is 16.0nm. The Sea Harriers pick up the Destroyer and continue to close. The Destroyer detects the 2 aircraft at a range of 13.5nm. At 9.5nm the Aconit begins trying to shoot down the incoming Sea Harriers with 100mm guns but is unsuccessful. The Sea Harriers continue to pass their low altitude die rolls (not crash) and fire their Paveways when at a range of…

Once a submarine passively detects a contact and develops a TMA solution, what sort of information is obtained? If a "Good" Solution is obtained, does the submarine know course, speed and range to the target? What about "Fair" and "Poor" solutions? This becomes important when firing torpedoes with limited range and enable points ect. Thanks

Playing Dave's wonderful scenario: Send in the Marines from Naval Review 2003. Planning to do a surgical strike with Tomahawk LACM. Looking at the annexes at the Tomahawk cruise missiles: My question is: What is TERCOM? I know the tomahawk uses terrain mapping for guidance, but thats it. How is this played in H4? Also, the warhead strength: what does it mean 4x14 for damage? It says 4 attacks. Does this mean 4 attacks at 14 dp strength? or 1 attack at 56 points rolled 4 times? I am guessing that this only involves attacking land targets rolling on the critical hit table. thanks.

Using the new Sitrep 31 air rules. Regarding Initial conditions of a Dogfight: If a F-16a with a maneuver rating of 4.0 is dogfighting a Mig-23MF with a maneuver rating of 3.0, does the F-16 get to fire first, even though the Mig-23 has a speed advantage? In my test scenario: A F-16a had to maneuver to avoid a SARH missile attack from the Mig-23MF, thus reducing its speed to 350 knots. The Mig 23 was zipping along at 700 knots before the range closed to Dogfight range. Should I have added +2 to the Mig-23s maneuver rating due to speed when the dogfight began? Now, the Mig has a maneuver rating of 5.0 and would get to go first. This would have made a huge difference i…

Just received sitrep 31 and Naval Review 2003. I already own Naval Review 2009 Looking over the new air rules, gonna try them this weekend. Just looking them over quickly, I may use parts of both. I like the randomness of disengaging from a dogfight. Also, I am not sure if it is appropriate to use pilot quality for air to air missile combat. Definately for guns. Seems much less complicated to end a dogfight. I am guessing that the dogfight is no longer "sticky".
