Morning all, This may sound like a stupid question, but where in the hotel are the rules for night time operations? I have searched the paper rules and can't find squat on it. The reason I'm asking is because I'm working on a hypothetical scenario about a night surface action between the Argentine and Royal Navy units in 1982 and can't find any data on whether the Lynx helos used by each side were VFR only or not. If the helo's were not able to fly it would greatly complicate targeting because the aircraft would have to use radar. The RN's use of Sea Skua's would also be greatly curtailed. Many thanks in advance. D

Here are the Windows and OS X versions of SimPlot 2. This is just an alpha test, but since I have no in-house staff, I am going to use you guys as the alpha testers. This version only supports single player operations at this time. I will have multiplayer up and running for the beta test. At this point I just want some feedback on the look and feel of the display and supporting windows. I am especially interested to know if the separate land and border maps are useful. Honestly, it would be easier to just have one map with land and border, but I have seen some Navy displays that only had borders. Please be aware that some things are easy to break, as error-c…

Greetings! I am a long time miniatures and tabletop wargamer but brand new to the world of Harpoon outside of the Tom Clancy Novels. I saw an article in Forbes recently on the release of 5th edition and it really sparked my interest! I have never been able to find a good naval wargame that really captures the depth and scale until now. To that end, I have set myself a goal to host a weekend event of Harpoon V for my buddies a little more than a year from now as my bachelor's party/guys getaway weekend. The rough idea is for it to be a modern day conflict in the South China Sea similar to "Cold Wars: War with China". I have picked up "Harpoon V Rules" and s…

Can multiple Long Range Anti-Air Missile Engagements be resolved on the Large Air Attack Resolution Table? I calculated the missile index (1.0) and thereby determined the pK, in this case 40%. There were 12x Su-35's that had launched 24 AA-12 Adders. I calulated 12 aircraft * 2 attacks * .40 Does anyone else believe that this jives? I hope to have a quasi-official response sometime soon. Thanks

My favourite aircraft (solely based on childhood impressions) is either the Tornado or the F-15E Strike Eagle, depending on what day it is. For kicks i just worked through a comparison of an F-15 and an F-18 attacking a soviet Kresta to see what differences there would be, if any. The result was: there were lots of differences! Both the F-15 and F-18 approached the Kresta at Medium height. The F-18 Detected the Kresta before being detected itself Fired its Harpoon from a range outside the range of the Krestas air defenses The Harpoon was very difficult for the Krestas air defenses to shoot down The Harpoon does much more damage than the F-15's Mavericks. …

  6. I checked with CV32 about the appropriateness of posting this on these boards, and he said to go ahead. Hi folks. I've had my Harpoon stuff for a long time. I've had a blast meeting Larry Bond, and many others over the years at conventions. But the collection has sat on the shelf for 10 years, so it's time for it to find a better home. Preferably one where the new owners will take it out and show it some light (even submarines have to surface once in a while). My entire collection of rules is up on eBay now. Here's a list of items that you can check out if you're so inclined. I'm sorry to say I found THIS on-line community so late. The lot of "16 SITREPS, Issue…

  7. I created a simple plotter (SimPlot) program that automates the process of moving units on a simple x,y coordinate system. The objective is to get myself to play H4 paper rules more often by eliminating the problems of graph paper or Neptune's Cat attacks for tabletop games. SimPlot will track time and motion of units. It will also provide range and bearing info to other units. Units can automatically follow other units that are selected as "targets." Unit movement tracks and times can be displayed in case you want to see where you have been. How about a few screenies? Well, the image came out smaller that I wanted, so I hope you can still read it. …

  8. Hi, Here is a bug I found with SimPlot2 on Mac OSX. I created a custom map for a Falklands scenario which covers Falkland Islands and the Argentinian coast. This map works well on a PC, but when I sent the .txt and the .png files to a friend using His Mac, he complained about SimPlot2 crashing. I tried to debug the map and found out that the problem was occurring when I had coordinates for more than one country, therefore, this works well on a Mac: MAP=Falklands1.png SCALE=2.4 COUNTRY=FALKLAND ISLANDS|128.25|-64.25 CITY=New Island|60.12|-60.50|T CITY=Port Stanley|191.12|-58.87|T CITY=Rio Gallegos|-239.88|-54.38|T CITY=Port San Carlos|147.75|-47.25|T CITY=P…

  9. In the example on page 6-22 of the Harpoon 4.1 rules, the optically directed British Mk 4 20mm has its “to-hit” chance halved because the A-4 it’s attacking is at V Low altitude. But on page 6-21 under the description of the Optical mode states that “Optical systems are all seaskimmer capable.” In the defense gun modifiers it states: “Sea skimming targets (in the V Low altitude band), reduce hit chance by 1/2, unless the gun system is listed as ‘sea skimmer capable.’” So if all optical guns are sea skimmer capable, why does the Mk 4 in the example get its “to-hit” chance reduced by half?

Howdy folks! jeffteacher23 here. I read RSR way back when and stumbled onto Harpoon v3 paper game about 1989 or so. I really like to run/referee a game between different players, As soon as v5 drops I plan on getting a copy and learning it. Then I'll need some players. I'm in Mainland China just north of HK, so it will probably be slow going until action is joined, then it will have to be on a weekend for the resolution via zoom and email for privileged communications. Any interest? I hope so!

View File CaS Plan Alpha This is a test scenario for using SimPlot to play a Command At Sea game. Unzip the scenario folder into your "SimPlot/Scenarios" folder and start a Single Player game. This scenario can be played with multiple players, but someone will have to be the referee. SimPlot uses Nautical Miles for distance measurement. CaS uses Yards, so for a rough conversion divide the Yards by 2000 to get NM. Also, multiply the on-screen NM ranges by 2000 to get Yards. The scenario details are in The Naval SITREP # 52 (April 2017) which is available from The Wargame Vault. ** NOTE ** This version is not compatible with…

From chat tonight. Discussing how use of Brahmos, or even SS-N-25 Switchblade equipped ships vs a SS-N-22 Sunburn equipped ship (see Shipwreck Indian Russian Engagement thread), it boils down to if the target gets detected by scouting helos, survival is based on its short ranged SAMs and countermeasures Sea King Mk.42 carries a Super Searcher. Detects a Medium target at 115nm. Radar horizon reduces that to 108nm if helo is at Medium Alt. Sovremennyy Mod carries F/A(1)2 Yozh Sa-N-7b w/ 24 Grizzly. Top Plate B 3D detects the large target at 160nm, reduced to 110nm due to RLOS. So each detects one another at roughly 109nm. Sa-N-7b has effective air r…

Read the rulebook and was trying to work through the Jumpstart: Guardian scenario as an attempt to learn with some guidance, when I realized that a lot of the examples in the scenario are out of date of the current errata, so I have some questions. The rulebook only mentioned the evaporative duct as being usable by ships, and yet the scenario has a helicopter using the duct to extend its radar horizon. Can aircraft use the duct? If so, where is that rule located? I think I figured this out by going through errata documents, but can someone confirm that the sensor type modifier for RF FC solutions no longer exists? As I understand it, instead of a modifier, n…

The map was inspired by the scenario "The Last Exocet" from Best of GDW's Harpoon SITREP. Shown on the map are several of the major airbase locations. The map scale is 2.5 pixels/nm. NOTE: The old background was a transparency that caused problems with text rendering. This version uses a black background that cannot be changed from within SimPlot. I suspended working on upgrades for SimPlot and SimPlot Viewer in favor of an overall rewrite of the program that would include both single and multiplayer modes. I have been experimenting with a language called Xojo so I could create PC, Mac, and Linux versions without having to maintain multiple programs. The experiment did not go well at first, but as I learned to cope with Xojo's way of doing things, and the differences between Mac and PC, I am at a point of increased confidence in Xojo. So, I have created a display test of what I would like SimPlot 2 to look like. Functionality at this point is limited, but at least you will get to see the future of SimPlot. …

SimPlot 2.3 Beta for MacOS View File This is an experiment in using SimPlot on Intel 64 bit MacOS. The dmg file will download but must be activated by clicking on it in the download pane of the browser or double-click on it using Finder (in the Downloads folder). The dmg will open as an attached device (sorry--there is no installer yet for SimPlot). If a window pops up showing the SimPlot2.app file, please close it. Running SP2 from that window will only provide a temporary storage space for the application. Using Finder, create a new sub-folder in your Applications folder (ex: SimPlot2). Drag and drop the SimPlot2.app f…
