A correct understanding of Air Intercept Radars with inherent Surface Search capabilities under the Smarter (and Simpler) Radar rules found on the Admiralty Trilogy yahoo group. So in summary, for the UK Blue Fox, I can utilize, separately, the Air Intercept and Surface Search capabilities per the High Tide Data Annex as the Air Intercept data is identical for the Blue Fox in both the "Smarter Radar" and High Tide while the Surface Search data is apparently missing from "Smarter Radar".

Has anyone played this scenario? What were your thoughts as far as the Air-Naval-Ground interaction. I've been slowly getting up to speed on with H4.1 and the GCS, and this scenario is of great interest to me. Once I play it, I'll be sure to post an AAR. Thanks, Pete

  3. Ok gang, While discussing the effects of offensive electronic jamming, and possible air defenses last night in chat - up came the topic of IRST. After reading the very brief passage toward the end of "Detection" (Chapter 4 of H4.1) I was able to gleen that IRST's are relatively short ranged, and that there are multiple generations, 1-3, with increasing passive detection capabilities with each. Can anyone point me to where the actually game effects can be found, primarily at what range does the generational IRST detect other objects. Thanks again, Pete

  4. In anticipation of running Dave Schueler's "Send In The Marines" from HNR2003, I am trying to get up to speed on LHA/VSTOL Flight Operations. I am using the AV-8B II data found in the HNR2003 and I would truely appreciate it if someone took a look at my numbers and planning process. Here it goes: Conditions: It is 1200 Local; Sea State 2; Winds 5kts 100 degrees True; Visibility 75%; Two layers of clouds - Intermittent @ 1,000m, 2,000m thick, and Scattered @ 12,000m, 1,000 thick. Intent: From USS TARAWA a section of AV-8B II will take off on a strike mission on a non-descript target 300nm away. The AV-8B II has a cruise range of 965nm and a maximum payload of…

In Harpoon scenarios that may span a few days or longer are there any tables or rules for aircraft readiness? For example - An A-6E flies off the carrier and returns in 4 hours, is readied in an hour, and flies off for another 4 hour patrol. How many times in a row can it do that before it needs a longer down time for maintenance, etc.? Another example - There is a squadron of 24 P-3Cs based in Iceland. How many of them would reasonably be expected to be mission ready (i.e. not down for maintenance, etc.)? Could all 24 get launched at once consistently or should xx% be expected to not be available at a given time? Perhaps this is too far into the …

Hi All, This pod (ALQ-248 AOEW ES pod) starting in 2021 can be loaded onto an MH-60R but the stat line doesn't give any kind of clutter value it just says "Detects location and course of TARH msls? Possibly create false targets". How should I interpret this game play wise? Should it be able to detect incoming TARH's at whatever the radar horizon is? Can I use it to make a false signature of say a B size ship for example? Thank you all for you help in advance btw. Really appreciate this community!

  8. I was looking into what air defence radar might be in operation in the UK and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_Integrated_Air_Defense_System#United_Kingdom suggests a combination of Lockheed-Martin AN/TPS-77 & AN/FPS-117 (which I understand are essentially the same, but the TPS-77 version is mobile) and a BaE Systems AR-327 in Cornwall. I wondered if my copy of H4.1 had stats for those radars so went to look. The annex notes on page 1 of "Data Annexes 4.1 - Ships, Aircraft & Weapons" suggests there should be a section J2 for "Land-Based radars" but my book seems to jump from "J1-6 - Annex J1 Naval Radars" straight to "K-1 - Annex K - Fire Control Radars". D…

In Annex B of H4.1, the F/A-18C/D lists among its sensors: "...FLIR and Laser Spot tracker can be carried in a pod." It is not listed in as ordnance. What type is it? In Annex G2, an AAS-38A/B is described as "FLIR for F/A-18" but does not list the spot tracker, could it be inferred?

Hello all! It's nice to finally come across some fellow people who have an interest in the Harpoon System. I've been an owner of the rules for a couple of years and although I've thumbed through them, I've never actually had an opportunity to dive right in (pun intended). But reading all of these AARs and such, I'm really able to now visualize how some of the rules actually interact with each other and I'm excited to really get myself involved. I do have a few questions though, pertaining to the Unification Project I've heard mentioned a few times. Is there eventually going to be one solid volume of Data Annexes detailing "The Navies of the World" from 1900 to Present…

  13. I created a simple plotter (SimPlot) program that automates the process of moving units on a simple x,y coordinate system. The objective is to get myself to play H4 paper rules more often by eliminating the problems of graph paper or Neptune's Cat attacks for tabletop games. SimPlot will track time and motion of units. It will also provide range and bearing info to other units. Units can automatically follow other units that are selected as "targets." Unit movement tracks and times can be displayed in case you want to see where you have been. How about a few screenies? Well, the image came out smaller that I wanted, so I hope you can still read it. …

Dear HarpGamers, I enjoyed Dangerous Waters and Sub Command for PC during the last years but due to the global recession and energy crisis decided to try a board game again. Ten years ago I had pretty much fun with Battle Tech and Squad Leader but speaking of Harpoon 4.x I can't gather information about the basic game play mechanics. Since I have to import the game it would be nice if experienced gamer here in the forum could answer some questions listed below. I'm aware of that the one or another question was allready posted but there might be other opinions now so I will ask them again. 1. Imagine a person interested in the Harpoon Game system. Would you recom…

The following are procedures you can use to make background maps for Harpoon/Simplot scenarios. Presently, there are no "official standards" for SimPlot maps. I am still experimenting with various color combinations to make the gaming experience better. If a scenario does not require the presence of land features or specific starting points, ending points, or objectives, then a background map is not necessary. Procedures for using Internet maps: 1) Using your favorite Internet mapping website, select an area of interest for your scenario. If the area is not very large, then you may be able to get the entire area within the screen. 2) Using your fa…

Pardon ignorance on this subject, but were tomahwak cruise missiles ever intended for the ASuW role? Recent history has played out its virtues in the land-attack mode. Is the TLAM phraseology indicative of its main, designed, purpose or just its more prevalent role? The question arises from my recent compilation of various ship data forms representative of the 1/2400 and 1/6000 models I currently have. For example, the Slava CG appears to be quite well protected with SAM's and other air defenses. The Bunker Hill (Tico VLS) has a boatload of tomahawks but only 8x Harpoons. Did a presumed 1990's conventional east-west naval engagement envision tamahwaks in an ASuW …

My initial idea was to see the effect of various different units carrying out an attack against an airfield. In my mind I viewed the airfield as an isolated not-well equipped one somewhere in Africa (think the book/movie “Wild Geese”). Then I decided that the airfield consisted of a few different things, and I planned to have each of my attack craft deal with different layers of the airfield. So I rolled what I wanted to do up into a single planned attack against the same airfield in this AAR. I’ve drawn up a map of an airfield on graph paper. Each square is 50 yards. There is a runway 2km long, single radar (single square) control tower (single square), 2 x …

Per PaulK and as always sounds well-founded and appropriate. "Here's the math on your problem: fuel factor of 3.53kg/nm 145kts/240=0.6nm Performance Effects Altitude effect = 2.5 (just my way of stating 1/.4) Throttle effect = 4 The "Performance Effects" are used to determine range equivalents (in terms of fuel expended) for aircraft that deviate from Clean loading, Cruise altitude and Cruise throttle setting parameters upon which the basic endurance numbers are based. Range equivalent of fuel used based on Altitude (and load) effect = 0.6 X 2.5 = 1.5nm Range equivalent of fuel used based on Throttle effect = 0.6 X 4 = 2.4nm What this says is…
