Wow, now that the LCS escorted convoy (another thread) has defeated the exocet strike, the convoy is now continuing on its way to its destination. The mine group's actions, suicide boats and the possibly most important Kilo SS will come into play. In order to get the SS into the fight, it needs to speed up. This began my concern for its safety in doing so; how will cruising effect the Kilo's detectability? I ran a quick exercise. Here is what I have determined after a quick look: The submerged Kilo max's out at 10kts submerged. The optional ALQ-22 sonar carried by the LCS is a dipping sonar requiring the platform to be hovering/dead in the water. Even if i…

View File Iron Bottom Sound Map This is a map for playing Battle of Savo Island or Iron Bottom Sound scenarios. I have not yet added depth zones, since I only intend to use it for surface scenarios, but I may do that in the future. I would appreciate any feedback, since it is my first stab at using SimPlot. I checked through out the paper rules post and did not find what i was looking for. If I missed it I am sorry for the double post. Just got my issue of harpoon 4 on friday (high tide edition) from clash of arms. Let me first say that I am more then impressed with all of the content. However, my only issue is that no quickstart rules/ senarios were included (like in the normal H4 box set). I didn't consider this a problem until i tried reading the complete rules. Im wondering if any one here has the quickstarts rules and if they could email me with them. Thanks, Jonathan

Hi All, So I've been thinking about Harpoon and related matters recently, and one of the suggestions made was that I might want to get my hands on a copy of the paper rules in some form. I doubt i could actually play, but maybe it would help me get an idea of naval tactics, or at least understand what's possible a bit more. I can seem to find almost everything except the rulebook in an electronic form. I have the "Dance of the Vampires," scenario book, and can get a copy of the "High Tide," data annex. There are miscellaneous books from the Admiralty Trilogy Group available at various places. I suspect this is probably a lost cause, but does anybody have contacts…

Interesting . Per Air War South Atlantic, p.84, at the close of 04 May 1982. “The loss of the Sea Harrier at goose Green caused further change to the Task Force’s operations. Never again were these precious aircraft to be hazarded in low-level attack missions involving flights over well-defended targets. From now on, when atacks on ground targets were required, the Sea Harriers would either bomb from a high altitude or use toss bombing methods, which were less risky but also far less accurate.” Was this lesson unlearned by forces in place to defend against the never to occur Warsaw Pact attack in western Europe and again in Kuwait/Iraq during the 1991 war?

Issue #37 arrived today. Just in time to rebuild some more harpoon interest prior to the upcoming MBX. Includes gaming the Iranian air defense. It vaguely reminds me of my attempt to tweak the Kola flow chart a number of years ago, but obviously greater thought, effort and research went into this. Wished for an update on Harpoon and how it is developing in line with the Trilogy harmonization process.

Time to brush off the H4.1 rules and scrub some of the rust off the old brain cells... Dawn Patrol is fondly remembered as a simple scenario to play and learn, but I decided this was a bit too dated. Recasting it in the light of the whole shift into the Pacific and an existing/ongoing conflict, I call it Island Clash. (Yeah yeah, imaginative name...) I plan on running the setup a couple of different ways to see both how the situation might have ended differently and to re-familiarize myself with the rules. Please do advise if I manage to screw something up. Island Clash Setting On Jan 30, 2013, escalating tensions over the islands the Japanese call the S…

Scenario: An F-15 approaching and firing on, a French Tourville class destroyer. I had no expectations for how this might play out. The only reason for choosing a Tourville was because it was a Destroyer and I’d get to see how effectively a randomly picked destroyers radar and air-defences worked. Detection ranges The Tourvilles Air Search radar is able to pick up a medium sized target (F-15) at 146nm (low altitude and above). Radar LOS is 96nm. The F-15 is flying at 650kts and medium height. Radar LOS to the Tourville is 106nm. The F-15 radar range is 70nm. The F-15 flies at medium altitude with its search radar on, since it is not worried about …

My initial idea was to see the effect of various different units carrying out an attack against an airfield. In my mind I viewed the airfield as an isolated not-well equipped one somewhere in Africa (think the book/movie “Wild Geese”). Then I decided that the airfield consisted of a few different things, and I planned to have each of my attack craft deal with different layers of the airfield. So I rolled what I wanted to do up into a single planned attack against the same airfield in this AAR. I’ve drawn up a map of an airfield on graph paper. Each square is 50 yards. There is a runway 2km long, single radar (single square) control tower (single square), 2 x …

Land based general attack table Has anyone put any time/effort into determining damage points for items not included on the General Attack Table on page 6-20? I'm looking to put together an extended target type list. Has anyone got any ideas for potential extra targets and their damage points, armour level, size and critical hit results? Throw your ideas out there for potential targets, their damage points, armour level, size, critical hit results and other info that might be important. I'll put together some of my own, and comment on others rationalising of targets as they go up.

Game arrived yesterday after a pleasant e-Bay auction. This game is essentially a lite version of our beloved paper Harpoon game. The rules book is a whole 16 pages. You won't see a distance measurement in any unit other than hexes, no altitude bands, etc, just fighting! The included map covers roughly the GIUK gap. More details to come as I explore more.
