May 13, 201016 yr Hello Harpgamers! I'm a noob, playing Harpoon Classic. Well, the thing is that... I can't understand the process of getting new scenarios or battlesets whatever Here are my questions. 1.Is it possible to play other scenarios(like falkland Island war, Korean war, war in South Africa, etc) in Harpoon Classic? 2.If It's possible, what do I have to do in order to play those scenarios? (what are the battlesets? what do I have to do with blq, scq, rdq files?) 3.What do I have to when it shows "Memory Allocation Failure"? Plz answer these questions, cuz I'm desperate to play those scenarios.
May 13, 201016 yr Welcome HMS Let's try scenarios first, holler back when you've got that down... 1. Assume I want to play From Russia With Love. 2. Download the scenario from the link above. 3. Extract the contents of the zip file to your HC directory (C:\Matrix Games\HCE by default). When you get the hang of it, you can unzip elsewhere. 4. The scenario info on the download page indicated the official database, that means HCDB, grab it from HCDB Download and unzip it to your HC directory as in step 3. 5. Note that you chose a WestPac scenario so you'll be opening the game to the WestPac battleset. 6. Start the game. 7. Select the "Western Pacific Battleset" and click OK. There is a chart matching scenario filename extensions (*.sc?) with battlesets at http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=2380 8. At the next screen click "User Scenario" 9. Select FRWL2B.SCq from the file listing. Tada, you are playing the scenario you downloaded.

Plz answer these questions, cuz I'm desperate to play those scenarios. (hoping not to appear to be conflicting with Tony E's answer)... here is my thoughts re each of your numbered questions: 1. yes 2. I think of three key elements: scenario battleset data base the scenario is kind of 'the game', the battleset is kind of the geographical area and the data base is the available elements such as bases, ships, planes etc. early battlesets have the database built in, battlesets such as the EC2003 series and Westpac and later have the database 'attached' or external. So for the desired scenario look for its battleset (in the download section of harpgamer this is easy as the scenarios are arranged by battleset) and look for its database (if it is a "new" battleset, eg EC2003, westpac etc). If the battleset is a 'custom' battleset then you have to download the battleset, these aren't very common. If the database is other than the default then download the database, eg HC-50to65-DB_100426 database is needed for scenario "korea-51". There are two ways of getting it all together in playing the game. The easy way is to download Tony E's "HC launcher" from the "tools/ mods/ docs" section of the downloads, it is easy to use and lets you arrange your custom files in their own dirrectories or to give them descriptive names. The second way is to keep copies of the commondb. rsr and commondb.res files that you will get with downloaded databases in respective folders and manually swap them into the main HCE folder to use that database. All the download stuff is under the download sections (upper menu line on web page) and clearly arranged. (A little practice and what appears muddy will become clear) My best hint is to keep asking for help until you have it all worked out. Don
May 14, 201016 yr Welcome to HarpGamer, HSM. Your questions lead me firstly to wonder whether you have Harpoon: Commanders Edition (HCE), or an earlier version of Harpoon Classic. Can you clarify for us which version you have?
May 14, 201016 yr Author Welcome to HarpGamer, HSM. Your questions lead me firstly to wonder whether you have Harpoon: Commanders Edition (HCE), or an earlier version of Harpoon Classic. Can you clarify for us which version you have? It's the "classic" one.
May 14, 201016 yr It's the "classic" one. Okay, that clarifies things, though I still wonder which version of "classic" ... i.e. HC97, HC2002, HC Gold, etc. More details on the versions can be found here in the FAQ. To make a long story short, you won't be able to play the new battlesets (expanded maps and such) and the scenarios that are found within them, without upgrading to Harpoon: Commanders Edition (HCE). HCE is offered for sale here, through Matrix Games.

May 14, 201016 yr So you mean it's impossible to play westpac scenarios in harpoon classic(gold edition 2002)??Serious?? Then I assume you have HC Gold? If so, some older Westpac scenarios may work fine for you. Newer Westpac scenarios, however, will have been written for HCE (with an updated database) and may not work at all. My overriding recommendation would be to pick up HCE.

I don't have the battleset and scenario in my gold edition folder. P.S. I'm wondering what these(http://www.harpoonpages.com/h2002gscenario.htm) HCGE scenarios are.

However, as Brad stated, you'll find a much better game (including an expanded WestPac) if you purchase HCE. The game has progressed much since that beta build. In addition, most of the WestPac scenarios at HarpGamer will provide a more enjoyable experience than those older ones at HarpoonPages (though they'll still work with HCE).

Is it possible to buy HCE in S.Korea? The Harpoon that I got was sent by my friend(he is in US). Plz can you give me the file(HCG-wpac-2003.16b3.exe )? (Eventhough I can buy it in this country,I can't buy it easily.) P.S. I played the HCE demo, and there are some missunderstandings. First, S.Korea will fight against N.K, but never against the Japanese. Second, Dokdo IS S.Korean territory (In fact, S.korea have more evidences(than Japan) about that) Third, N.Korean problem is to held by S.Korean, not Japanese(and US agrees with that). If some Koreans play this demo, they will freak out for sure. I mean, they will be aggressive..(really) I know it's fiction, but at least don't make them a red force (or make an additional scenario that S.korean defends Jap's navy from Dokdo.)(and fights against N.Koreans.) S.Korea is an ally country(with US), don't make them a red force. I personally suggest some additional scenario that Skoreans also fight against N.Koreans and defend Dokdo against the Japs.

I assume HCE can be purchased from South Korea via the Matrix online store. If not, yes, we can help you get it like you got HC Gold. So if you have any problems, let us know and we'll assist. We here cannot give you the WestPac beta installer. AGSI requested we remove it around the time HCE was released. The WestPac beta was just that, a beta and HCE is so much more capable and stable anyway that it was a move we were comfortable making to stop distributing the WestPac beta. As for the rest, yes it is fiction and designers are free to assign sides as they see fit. I appreciate hearing your opinion on the reaction though, it is the first feedback I've seen about the sides assignment being taken so seriously.

If I understand correctly, what the player wants to do is to create a scenario where S. Korea is pitted against Japan. If that's correct, I know that Japanese bases can be assigned as either Red or Blue in the Scenario Editor. As to the Japanese units, it should be easy enough to use the PE to get what he needs. I'd guess he could make copies of the desired units and assign them a Red identity. I hope this helps. Buddha

Any installation or platform can be designated Blue or Red (or a neutral Green, for that matter ). So, a Japan vs ROK scenario would not be difficult to create. In fact, there's already one such creature in the Westpac Battleset that comes with the sim.
