The Hunt for Red October

You are Defecting.

The entire Russian Navy is after you.

Read your orders and good luck.

PS. I welcome all feedback...especially on how to make this scenario as difficult as possible

I just took this one for a spin and I must say I was surprised to die :o . All these Soviet SSNs were running by me at full speed and of course totall blind. What I didn't notice was that they decided to slow down, when they did I got hammered. The Americans will be waiting a long time at the rendevous point because I didn't even make it South of Iceland!

As someone who's read the book twice and seen the movie more times than I care to admit, I'm enjoying this one immensely. Nice touch with the Red Orders file.

Not that I have this game, but one thing occurred to me.

Does the default DB have a "Red October" version of the "Typhoon"?

If by that you mean the "caterpillar" silent drive, maybe there's a way to modify the unit in the PE to simulate this. The problem I see with that approach is that the drive went down for a period of time in the story, resulting in detection and attack by a Bear F, and was then restored. If there's a way to include something like this in a scenario, I don't know what it is.

I mean that- and adding on six more SLBMs, as stated in the story.

I'd forgotten about the drive failure.

Six more SLBMs should be easy enough to add in the PE, as well as altering the craft's dimensions to accomodate the change. I don't have a copy of the book handy, but I believe the size increase over the standard Typhoon was mentioned in there someplace. There's probably a way to alter the acoustic characteristics to simulate the caterpillar as well, but I'm not familiar enough with the Sub annex to speculate on how to do it. There's bound to be someone in this group who has the answer to that one.

Something i tried in the design of this scenario early on was for your submarine to be the latest russian SSN...i think it was the yasseni ?...the super akula type.

Anyway, what i found was because the sub was so superior to everything else in the russian inventory, that i could detect and evade all subs and ships 50 miles before they had any chance of detecting me.

it made the game quite dull and little more than a navigational exercise.

i think having the caterpillar drive would be great fun in a typhoon, perhaps in a scenario where you have to sneak up to the eastern US coast, pass through all the latest and greatest US SSNs and FFGs, and attack from point blank range. That way the super quietness of your sub could offset the superior performance of the US sonars.

You could probably do a reasonable emulation of the "caterpillar" drive just by reducing the Base Source Level of the sub in the PE, thereby making it more silent. Adding six more SLBMs would be similarly trivial. IIRC, in the book, the caterpillar only failed near the very end after battle damage, which the game now simulates by making units noisier when damaged, so possibly that concern is less relevant.

Actually, the caterpillar failed due to sabotage when the Red October was making the high speed run through the undersea canyons. This was when the Bear F dropped a torpedo, which was narrowly avoided. It may have failed in the battle near the end as well, but since they'd been located, the failure of the caterpillar at that point, if it happened, had little impact.

That only happened in the movie, though. In the book, Red October quietly cruised the length of Red Route One, uneventfully. Which gave poor Jonesey a couple of VERY bad days ... :D I've never been very fond of the movie. Even Hollywood can't actually *ruin* something with that much cool hardware in it, but they sure did warp and butcher a fine novel ... <_<

It's been about 20 tears since I read the book, so I probably let the book and movie blend in my head. As to your other point, I don't think a movie's ever been made that wasn't put to shame by the book it was based on. I try to make a point of reading the book first, since once the Hollywood types get done cutting, pasting, and screwing with things, it's easy to lose track of what's going on if you haven't read the story first.

Heh ... you've just performed a minor miracle, Buddha --- for the first time in decades, I actually wish I watched more movies, because I'm sure there's got to be *one* out there somewhere that is worthy of its novel, even though I can't think of it ...

Not only is what you say true, but it's getting worse all the time. Their latest antic that bugs me is taking old sitcoms from the late '50s and early '60s and turning them into movies. I guess they figure that those of us old enough to remember are too old to care. That and comic book heroes. Whatever happened to original ideas?

I must admit, however, the the Lord of the Rings movies did a fairly decent job as regards the books. To reproduce the books in detail would have taken movies that lasted a week or so, but they came as close as anything I've seen.

Hello,

I am a new member and have dowloaded Red October.

Where do I put the 4 files and how do I access them?

Thank you for any help
