When I was in the KSA during Gulf War I, a picture was printed on page 1 of the local paper showing a cormorant covered with oil as a result of Saddam's despicable decision to pump crude into the water of the gulf. I believe the photo was distributed fairly widely at the time, and I'm trying to find it available for download someplace.

 

I was working in Saudi Arabia as a civilian at the time, and one of Uncle Saddam's Scuds went off in the desert and blew the windows out of the back of my house. Passing out on the couch that day was the luckiest thing I ever did. Strange as it may sound, seeing that poor bird covered with oil ticked me of more than anything else I experienced during the war, and I'd really like to find the pic.

Many of them weren't actually "Scuds" per se, but a modification of the design from imported missiles, called the Al-Hussein. They broke up in the atmosphere on re-entry because of poor design.

Not that any of the Scud B's still in Iraqi inventory by that time wouldn't have done the same. They had fired off most of them, iirc, during the 1980-88 war with Iran. The Al-Husayn was hoped to achieve a bit better range (arising from the experience with Iran), but as you pointed out, it didn't quite work out as well as hoped.

I realise it sounds weird, but despite all the bs Saddam's invasion caused me and my family when I was working in the KSA, that pic pissed me off more than anything.

They had a sizable portion of one on display in the lobby of the hotel in Dhahran where all the news media cats stayed. I still have a small fragment that I went out into the desert and got right after I lost my windows. It's suspended in a block of clear plastic so I can save it for my daughter.
