April 9, 20197 yr I can't find all the ships in the GIUK tutorial. Any tips? I've tried it a hundred times following the instructions, and retracing steps at creep speed when unable to find ships.

That all said, I strongly suggest using the WestPac 1.0 scenario as your tutorial. It does a far better job of showing the dynamic nature of the game and you are much more likely to find all of the mentioned units. The gap is a hard one to fill, contributors tend to know the game well and don't want to spend their time making the game accessible to newbies. That said, good job speaking up, nobody need be frustrated. We can always team you up with a buddy who either backseat drives or who you converse with while watching that buddy play (Twitch, Facebook live, Skype, YouTube live, …).

April 10, 20197 yr I wouldn't say there are good ways. In GIUK 1.0, creating formation patrols with the shipborne helicopters is likely your best bet. One helicopter per formation patrol, put them along the axis of travel of your surface group one or two rings out from the main body. They will drop sonobuoys, giving you the greatest coverage. Again, works much better in WestPac 1.0 (subs are still hard to find there but the lookers are very close to the 'target' subs).

Push your best ASW assets - that is, your towed array and good hull sonar equipped escorts, submarines, and your ASW oriented aircraft (e.g. helicopters with sonobuoys and dipping sonars, fixed wing aircraft with sonobuoys) - into the outer rings of your formation, especially along the expected axes of attack or in the areas where you suspect (or fear) enemy submarine attack. The Tactics 101 series on both naval formations and ASW will probably provide helpful background.

April 10, 20197 yr Author So, I'm running through GIUK 1.0 with cheat mode on, and I notice that my submarine only detects a surface contact within the dark green range circle and not the light green circle. I am running only with passive sonar. I don't understand why I'm not detecting the ship when it is within the light green range circles.

Although the concentric green circles depict your passive sonar range circles (by CZ or convergence zone distance), it is by no means guaranteed that a target within those circles (or any circle) will be detected. The code runs a sonar detection check every 5 minutes, iirc.

As a far less experience harpooner then CV32 and TonyE , I would suggest sticking to the stock scenarios given in the battle sets at first to learn the different units and tactics used. The earlier battlesets also are easier on learning formation patrols, weapons and sensor range circles. As you notice while weapon circles are pretty much set as sensor detection range circles also will take into account the unit you are trying to find as technology differ, a Kilo class is much harder to find then a November class. You will learn which units are best and how to use them. A P3 Orion detecting a sub along way from your units is better then a ship which usually finds a sub already in its weapons range which instead of a laid out plan of attack, Orion, you have a shootout and likely damage control. As you progress the scenarios will encompass more units and aspects of warfare which requires different application of tactic based on the units provided. The first battlesets are somewhat hardwired while the latter 2003, Westpac and others add more aspects like in air refueling which adds to possible tactics and flexibility of units used. They also use different databases which show improvements in units which mean the Victor you fought yesterday is not the same beast today. When you comfortable then move onto the user scenario where they become larger area's, more units and surprises. One thing about harpoon is it is progressing with the help of the staff of this website so today's tactic will not necessarily be the best down the road so tomorrow harpoon might be a whole new challenge. Also alot of question can be answered just by searching the topics in the forums along with some present and historical information.
