Playing HCE as a blind gamer

No progress other than some scheming. Please rattle my cage in a month or so, I'd like to get you some course-entering help by then, at least a first stab at it for your commentary.

Plenty of interesting things happening here recently I see I'm assuming you're playing with the standard game engine from the installation? Why I ask is that one of the many advances that Tony has g

  • Welcome, I have e-mailed Didier asking him to reply. Our last exchange at that e-mail however was in 2005 so it may not be monitored anymore.   As for setting courses, courses in the game are track

  • Welcome to the website!   I'm happy and rather proud that we have been able to help visually impaired folks previously, so I am hopeful that we can do it again.

Well, summer (in the southern hemisphere) isn't my active Harpoon time, I haven't done anything I'm afraid.

I'm just starting to get my head working again so don't have any plans and since you're still interested I'll put this on top of list, although I'm not sure how friendly it will be.

Consider this pre-arranged cage rattling. One ping only. :)

Oy :(

Don, what do you think of the following?

•A way to handle ASW accessibly, or at least direct the searches without requiring the mouse.

You did a lot of groundwork in the toolbox. Would you be willing to start putting together some functionality on this front? I would start by looking at the situation where the player has detected an enemy submarine and must localize that submarine. I'm thinking an ExportDLL that lists detected enemy submarines that may be in range of airborne ASW assets for localization. Once an enemy submarine group/unit is selected, list the friendly ASW air groups in range. The player can select one or more to localize then apply your magic to undertake a search. If/when the submarine is localized, tell the user. Just this fairly simple use-case has multiple chunks of functionality to develop that should be able to pretty much stand on their own. Thoughts?

I'm looking at:

A way to set courses without requiring the mouse to click on the map.

Phase 1: An ExportDLL listing player groups that can accept a course. Selecting a group brings up a dialog prompting for an altitude, heading, speed, and distance to travel. Double-check that the distance is possible before accepting it.

Phase 2: Add a run-aground check?

Phase 3: Add awareness of detected enemy groups? (Do you really want to close within #nm of enemy installation ZYa?)

BlindGuyNW, do you think the capabilities in the previous post would be helpful? They are just baby steps but still something.

Thanks, TonyE. These seem like great first steps.

If I can help with anything, feel free to hit me up. I haven't actually loaded up HCE in a while, so my memory is a little hazy.

Hey, all.

Just thought i'd write on the eve of my birthday and see if there was anything new to report. :)

Here's hoping for something testable at some point soon. I was playing an old DOS space simulation game yesterday, which has a few similarities to Harpoon.

Happy belated Birthday! July 21st was the last time I worked on the first add-on for you (setting courses). Don't hold your breath waiting :(. Real-life work keeps me very busy these days. that should eventually change, just not sure when.

What is the old DOS space sim?

Hey, Tony,

Understood. :) I hope the work is at least engaging as well as busy..

The sim is called Begin, a Tactical Starship Simulation. I think it’s loosely based on the Starfleet Battles tabletop game. It’s only accessible to me at all because it has a text mode.

The ability to (mostly) control a fleet of ships definitely reminded me of Harpoon, even if the details are a little less rigorous. :)

Double post for me, but I wanted to mention that I've got my hands on a game called Grey Seas, Grey Skies, from Simulations Canada. Harpoon seems much larger in scope, obviously, but I'm happy to have something to occupy my naval urge while it remains just out of reach. :) The textual nature of the game is, once again, the only reason I can play it at all.

Hey all,

I was reading something earlier today which put me in mind of Harpoon again, so here I am back to see how things are going. I suspect anxiety over the current global situation is partially to blame, I have a family friend who's fairly involved in naval matters.

Anyhow, I'd love to do some gaming with Harpoon at some point, whether in the current form or with any accessibility work that might have been done since. Please consider this yet another ping of interest :)

I have hardly touched the RHA add-in (Range Heading Altitude) but it helps kick me in the pants that you are still out there waiting.

TonyE,

THanks for letting me know. I'm definitely still here and still interested. I happened to stumble onto a PDF of one of the Harpoon manuals, ca. 1996. That got me to thinking about the later versions, and back to wanting to play again. :)

TonyE et Al,

Any chance there's been any movement on the RHA add-on? :) I keep coming back to an interest in Harpoon every few months, it seems. The current global situation probably doesn't help that any. Fingers crossed for something sometime soon.

I'm glad to note the smile in your post. Come back one more time in a few months if still interested.
