May 30, 201412 yr Hi Folks, First post - I'm an ex US Submariner and I've messed with Harpoon on and off since it first came out on the computer... I've recently found the Matrix HCE Demo to get my feet wet again and it seems a lot different from the last time I played Harpoon Classic... Anyway - I'm working my way through the scenario where China invaded the Philippines - and - I have a small beachhead established with my fleet offshore... My ground forces consist of a substantial contingent of M1A1 Abrams that need to move North and take the airport... I've used my aircraft to knock out many of the enemy ground forces in between my tanks and their goal... The problem is every time I start to move my ground forces forward - I just start losing tanks left and right... I have air superiority and a CAP flight loitering above the action - so I'm pretty sure there are no enemy aircraft in the area... Now these are M1A1's and given their performance history - these guys should roll over just about anything that stands in their way... They never report seeing the enemy - they never shoot at or kill any of the enemy... Is this the way it goes with Harpoon ground forces or am I doing something wrong ? Any help most appreciated... Regards, Scott
May 30, 201412 yr Hi Scott and welcome to HG. Bubbleheads are welcome here! You didn't identify the scenario specifically, but I am guessing it is 'Philippine Crunch' in the Westpac Battleset. Two points follow: 1. Ground warfare is modeled in pretty basic fashion in Harpoon. More or less, the ground forces you will see serve mainly as targets or obstacles. There are a number of reasons for this, but suffice to say this much is true. 2. Without giving away too much of that scenario in the way of spoilers, be advised that Red also has ground forces ... and artillery. You will need to get some battlefield reconnaissance in play before/while advancing north.

The game is indeed very different than it used to be and continues to change (albeit at a leisurely pace lately) thanks to the participation of the members here at HG. We are always looking for more feedback and participation so don't be a stranger.
May 30, 201412 yr Author Hi Folks, Thanks for the welcome and information... Ahh - battlefield surveillance - I lost my Kiowa early on - I'll try this again from the beginning... Thanks again... Regards, Scott
May 30, 201412 yr Scott, I'm a career squid whose knowledge of ground warfare can probably be written on a postage stamp. For strictly Naval warfare, it doesn't get any better than Harpoon, including the classified stuff we used when I was active duty. NavTag comes to mind. If you really want to get into ground combat, I'd highly recommend TacOps, available for demo or purchase here:http://www.battlefront.com/products/tacops4/tacops4.html Buddha
May 31, 201412 yr If you get to the point where you're tearing out your hair, ctrl-alt-s will let you see all the enemy, at least you then know what was going on but it pretty much destroys the game challenge. Hope you stick around and have fun, you might have some good tips for handling subs
May 31, 201412 yr Author Hi Folks, Thanks for the tips - I purchased the Harpoon collection last night so now I'm just getting up to speed... Yeah - my interest is mostly Naval combat - of course I've used the Sub Command franchise as well - and from a bubbleheads perspective - thats probably the most realistic we'll ever see... To show how much of a ground pounder I am not - the thought that the enemy might have had artillery in this circumstance never even entered my mind... I still don't know if thats the reason i lost like 8 M1A1's in less than a couple of minutes but maybe ? Thanks one and all... Regards, Scott
May 31, 201412 yr Red has helicopters too, but I am assuming your air superiority saw and dealt with those.
