I was curious if anyone had thoughts about how to further promote ANW and the HUD-4 database?

 

For example, does anyone have any recommendations of other sites where we could post our scenarios? I have no objection to posting my own in more than one place if it will increase the number of people who can enjoy them. However, most of the other Harpoon sites I know about do not look like they have been updated very recently.

 

Is there anywhere else the HUD-4 itself should be posted?

 

Thoughts? Ideas? Recommendations?

IMHO, the biggest drawback to posting ANW and HUD4 material on other sites (beyond Matrix Games forums) is the fact that you will be in territory 'dominated' by the PDB machination.

 

Which would ordinarily be no big deal - there's room for variety in the Harpoon world, of course - excepting that (for one) the PDB machination has taken on the distasteful flavour of claiming to be the "one and only" as far as ANW goes. This is unfortunately exactly the same kind of obnoxious attitude of self-proclaimed hegemony that had plagued the Harpoon community for years. And which thankfully went the way of the dinosaur until PDB adopted the very same persona. By way of example, and if you haven't noticed already, the latest advertising shtick is the obviously erroneous (and offensive) claim that PDB is the only database that works.

 

So that's the dismal world facing you in those other venues. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I expect a foray "out there" would be a frustrating (if not maddening) exercise.

 

If you can ignore the machinations, then by all means check out sites like CombatSim and Armchair General, among others.

I'm biased but I like the idea of announcing scenarios far and wide but just posting the files themselves here and post the links far and wide so that when you need to do a scenario update you upload it in one place instead of many. As Brad said you still face the very real mountain of attacks and if you can stand them and not be overwhelmed, great!

 

 

My humble piece of advice: Let Herman Hum, Vincenzo Beretta and their followers play in their sandbox and act as children. They're no adults, they never will recognize they go the wrong way. By the way, on a French forum, Herman was posting over his Poorly Designed Bravosierra. He got expelled since the moderator remembered about the plagiarism of DB2k. These guys think loudspeaking over the web make them clever, they're just rabblerousers. They have less importance than they think. My plan is actually something along these lines...I'm simply going to let people know the HUD-4 is out there, that the scenarios are here at harpgamer, etc. I have already said I have no intention of arguing about databases.

 

Assuming he does not simply decide to ignore me, what poor Herman probably does not realize is that he cannot win this argument because there is no argument. I am simply not going to engage with him. I'm not saying the HUD-4 is better or making any other claim about it (or him) that could be argued or debated; I'm just saying that I personally like the HUD-4, that I think other people will have fun with the HUD-4 and should try it out, and that I hope people will like the scenarios I have written. These things are simply true; they cannot be proven to be "right" or "wrong."

 

At the risk of sounding too zen, I think this is one of those situations where the best way to prove we're right is not to prove we're right. I write scenarios with the HUD-4 because I like the HUD-4. So I'm going to let people know the HUD-4 is out there and that my scenarios are out there. I hope other people will write more scenarios with the HUD-4. If people like the scenarios, they will use the HUD-4. If they don't, no argument I make about whose database is "better" is going to make any difference.

As you can see, my approach is to not engage him directly. I am not going to argue with him. I am simply going to stick to my own experience with the HUD-4 database, which has been very good, and suggest that people should try it for themselves and see if they like it, too.

I can answer this question. For I know exactly what he did. He boasted on a French forum he had uploaded HUD4 to the Reimer Editor. By the way, it is strictly forbidden without my written agreement, and never Mr Hum will get any document from me. But he ran into one of my traps. I've altered one of the Reimer Editors files to add a new flag, and I was made aware that anybody who doesn't know there's an extra data to it is unable to upload data from HUD4 without making the tweek as well. I won't expand on what's new, since I'd open a door that should be closed. But last thing I'd say, Mr Hum boasts his DB is the only one that works, the only thing he forgets to mention is that his DB is the only one generated from stolen data.

Again, my goal is to not argue with people. I'm not trying to prove the HUD-4 is a better database or anything like that. I'm sticking with facts that cannot be argued--I like the HUD-4, I use it to write scenarios, I have very few problems when I use it, and I hope other people will try it out and I hope they will like it.

 

And please, everyone, write more scenarios! The more scenarios we have here at harpgamer, the more reason people will have to give the HUD-4 a try and maybe stick with it. And the more fun we will have.

Mark: I like the HUD-4. Try it out. There is no risk. If you like it, you can keep using it. If you don't like it, you can stop using it.

 

I can't make Herman change his mind and/or stop lying if he is lying, but he can't make me change my mind and he can't keep me from ignoring the illogical, incendiary, and/or insulting statements he makes (he invoked Linsdey Lohan in one of the threads) and he can't keep me from simply saying, "Look, I like the HUD-4. Give it a try. What have you got to lose?" There is nothing he can do against that kind of argument. And if I get people to try the HUD-4 and they like it, I win. And they win, too.

Mark, leave Mr Hum alone. Such a man is only able to copy others, he doesn't bring anything original. He's happy with his Poorly Designed Bulls..t? Great for him, let's keeping him building sand castles in his sandbox with his associated.
