Any chance the USCG icebreaker under study might be a new class of icebreaker, larger? I didn't find any hints during a few Google searches. The Healy has already been around for 14 years so isn't exactly a new design.

Thanks!

I thought K-19 (a "Hotel") was the "Widowmaker" - not to say that the HENs weren't dangerous subs to serve on.

  • Time to start counting.

  • Like naval shipbuilding most everywhere on the globe, rather than being endemic to India.

Been hearing some rumblings about the possibilities of the US going in with Canada on a Deifenbaker class. All of the US's breakers are antiquated. If Canada is planning to build a new hull in Vancouver under NSPS, this might be a way for two birds to be killed with one stone - Canada gets an influx of cash and extends the class (a victor for the economies of scale) and SeaSpan Shipyards can create more jobs for the BC region. Sounds like a win-win to me.

(rmk: They’re back! Ahh, it’s looks like the Russians are letting their mask slip)

Chatted about this with Tony on IRC. I think the Nansen have the tactical length canisters for their Mk 41 VLS. So, they'd either need to swap out for strike length, install a new Mk 41 (with strike length cells) in the space already provided, and/or buy SM-6 when it becomes available), as well as update the SPY-1F. That's a fair bit of effort (read: cash).

TAIWAN

The two Dutch-built SEA DRAGON class submarines will be armed with Sub-Harpoon anti-ship missiles (imported from USA) … next year. (rmk: I see an update to the HUCE DB coming on this one)

Already in there. Just need to change the in-service date from 2009.

A joint effort with the Diefenbaker project would seem to make good sense, as long as folks south don't go crazy with the 'Buy American' approach. :P

As far as USCG funding for a new icebreaker goes ...

The service is asking for $8 million in 2013 to begin the program, and a total of $860 million through 2017 for research, design and development and construction. The icebreaker funding plan will ask for $120 million in 2014; $380 million in 2015; $270 million in 2016; and $82 million in 2017.

Brad,

Really goof stuff! Your right that the unions will likely have a hissy-fit. We all know that American shipyards and steel ndustry are "infant industries" (even though they've been in existence for over a 100-years - that's some pretty old babies, by the way). I think they need to grow-up and finally learn the cold, hard truth about life in this great big world we live in - Life is not far. In business you have to compete, to succeed.

Should I expect sausage if they manage to pull it off? ;)

The United States has indicated for the first time it would be willing to lease or sell nuclear submarines (VIRGINIA class) to Australia.

Well, since we appear to have spent $1.75 billion on the Victoria class thus far, without appreciable success, we could have managed to buy just one operational Virginia. (Which, I think, would have been money better spent).

During a ceremony at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., the US Marine Corps (2nd Marine Aircraft Wing's Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501) introduced the F-35B Lightning II aircraft into its fleet.

But they won't fly until late March. <_<

I must say I don't quite understand this supposed Russian financial squeeze. The price of oil continues to climb, that means more dineros for Russia. Sure their own fuel costs rise but really, it should be a huge net gain. Czar Putin (does have a nice ring to it) just has to hope the military in his pocket can trump the proletariat masses yearning for iPads.

You all fail to realize an estimated 40% of the defense budget evaporates because of the leadership and defense industr big wigs are padding their Swiss bank accounts! 40%, that's huge!

I'm no economist but I think the huge reliance on oil exports is perhaps part of the problem. It keeps Russia's boat afloat but the other ongoing issues (corruption is one) keeps the overall investment less than satisfactory. With their economy generally expected to slow, and folks clamoring for "iPads" (maybe an apt symbol for a demand for social services in what is a fairly young population demographically), there comes the 'squeeze'.
