Battle of Britain?

Featured Replies

I apologize if this is not the proper place to post it but......

Has anyone done a scenario where the Soviets have overrun Europe much likes the Germans did and the RAF/NATO is faced with having to defend their bases and industry against Soviet bombers? And based in the EC2003 GIUK battleset/database.

I was thinking something along the lines of all the Soviet heavy bombers coming out of Norway and then Frogfoots and such out of France supported by Flankers, etc. and then on the English side NATO Tornados, Eurofighters, F-15's, F-16's, E-3's, etc.

And maybe some cross channel Special Forces stuff (Pave Low's, MC-130's, SEALS from subs, etc.)

Victory conditions along the lines of

Blue: Defend the UK (Bases and Industry) for 72 hours or eliminate Soviet bases across the channel (5?)

Red: Destroy 5 (out of 7?) airfields and 10 (out of 15?) Industrial sites.

Just thought it sounded like it might be interesting. Any thoughts?

I would just try to make it myself but Win 7 64 bit :(

To my knowledge there isn't such a beast for the EC2003 battlesets.

(Regarding the SE, have you investigated other potential options for using it? I also run 64 bit but I use VMWare to run the SE).

I've been playing around with some compatability stuff and I think I'll be able to get it to work :D.

I did the whole "Windows Compatability Mode" thing so it was starting in Win2000 but the thing didn't even open. Am I doing something wrong here or.....?

Nope, you have to use a virtual machine or dual boot or... You cannot run the SE directly in a 64-bit version of Windows. So if you have Windows 7 Professional or 'higher' you can get the free XP Mode virtual machine from Microsoft and run the SE in that. Or if you have an old Windows license (win2000, win98, etc.) you can install that in a virtual machine (I usually use VMWare Player as the VM enabler). Thanks to your interest I've also been putting some time into reviving running the SE in Linux thanks to WINE and have EC2003 and earlier battlesets working there.

Come see us on IRC, we can chat about it and find the best way for you.

I know you guys like pretty pictures, SE on Ubuntu just now (though I'm finding more unfortunate quirks).

In the NACV downloads is "Den' Orjol". The Soviets stage a Battle of Britain "Eagle Day"

It's written for the original NACV battleset, though.

Wow, that looks really cool. Not exactly what I was looking for but I'll like it just as much I think. I'll try to get to play it ASAP. Thanks!!

Its too bad its for the old NACV though :(

Hi Tarawa (and everyone else),

I saw your post last week and actually built a Battle of Britain scenario on EC2003 using Norwegian, French and Holland Red bases.

However, while I can load and edit everything without issue, when I try to run it in HCE I get a game crash almost instantly.

I looked for guidance on the board but don't see anything on what causes crashes. Can anyone provide fault finding steps to find what is wrong?

Cheers

Often the cause of such behavior is an empty group (a group with no units). You can open your scenario in the scenario editor and press the spacebar repeatedly to hop between groups. If one highlights that is off map or has no units try deleting the group. Rinse and repeat until the scenario loads in the game.

Alternatively; send your scenario to hc3@harpgamer.com and we'll take a look to further diagnose.

In the scenario editer can also use the "Misc" "analyze scenario" (ctrl Z?) function to isolate any number of trouble some items (I always find something I've botched :D )

Thanks all. Found a couple of bases that were off the map and some other errors I missed.

Here you go. Battle of Britain V1.00 B)

BATTOFUK.zip

Took your scenario for a spin. The action was 'spirited' for awhile, and it was nice to see a mix of air and naval action.

I was a little alarmed at the prospect of having to defend Britain from Su-34 and Su-35 raids with a handful of Tornado F.3 and Phantom FGR.2 but it did work out in the end. ;)

A couple of points I hope you will find helpful:

* The enemy air attacks seemed to peter out after a short while, even though aircraft remained available to Red. Check your 'Repeat Attack' options in the SE.

* The surface group in the Skaggerak goes aground quickly, I think. This is sometimes quite difficult to avoid in narrow waters.

* I destroyed all the bases, aircraft and ships I could find, but never did achieve victory conditions. I didn't check to see what they might be.

* I noticed that you did not make use of independent SAM or AAA systems, and instead relied on any defenses that came with the installations. You may want to check this option to see if it interests you.

* You should drop the ***.BK* file from your zip, as this is just a backup file and although small, it is completely unnecessary to include.

Once you're happy with the scenario, please upload it into the Downloads section here at HarpGamer. We're happy to host it for you. :)

I agree with Brad's comments, I also think you should add some SSMs (Scuds, Iskander) since they were part of the Soviet/WP armies.

The formation of the surface group in the Skagerrak needs to be more compact, as right now the pickets are running aground.

Also, the air is a mismatch of types in service over 20 years, if interested I can run a quick OOB check.

Appreciatte the comments.

The Reds do have the initial advantage, but the two Blue carrier groups offset that after the initial onslaught. There are not many SU's. Yes, there are twenty years of platforms. When scraping the bottom of the barrel you are forced to use all sorts of things. I thought of doing it with top of the line A/C initially, but UK does not have Phoenix missiles to offset the Foxbat's long reach. I like balance on both sides. Besides if the Sovs did grind NATO down and make it to the channel I doubt they would have that much top of the line stuff left.

Repeat air attack comment noted. I did have several set for continuous attacks, but you may have killed those aircraft. Will re-examine.

VC's may have been entered incorrectly. The interface is a bit confusing. Will look at it.

Marine unit formation ranges were fluffed out a bit to make ASW a little more wide ranging. Will see if I can get it out of the Skagerrak a little more and look at the ranges. I never got (or saw) an option for optional start positions. As I remember it used to come up when establishing the initial position, but that was 10+ years ago.

Thanks!
