AAR Bullies Bumping Bellies I was browsing the Harpgamer download scenarios and this scenario from Rainman caught my eye, it turned out to be one of the most challenging scenarios I've played for a significant time. Bullies Bumping Bellies- Turkey vs Egypt 2020 In the summer of 2020, the situation in eastern Libya deteriorates to the point where Egypt and Turkey feel they have to get involved. This explores what happens next. This scenario is designed primarily to be played from the Blue (Egypt) side, and is quite challenging, even for experienced players. Also can be played from Red (Turkey) quite good for beginning or intermediate players. ++++SPOILER ALERT++++ A quick look at the battle map, reading the orders and consideration of the intelligence report: On the simple side we only needed to seek out and stop a transport surface group. Complicating the problem, we believe we will have inferior air to air presence, the amount of ocean to search is significant and two SA-21 installations cover a significant part of it. Running thru our surface groups and solo sub groups we set them to conservative speeds fearing possible submarine presence. Our stealthiest NOE capable interceptors took off to form a picket line at very low altitude hoping to form surprise attacks on in coming enemy interceptors. With plenty of unmanned reconnaissance aircraft on hand we used these in the more dangerous areas to commence our search, backed them with a roaming EW patrol (on standby for when needed) well within our picket and a few of our longer A2A range interceptors mixed in. There was a know SCUD danger and so our concentrated air bases were picketed with more interceptors and search patrols were sent out to try and locate SCUD sites. Finally the already ARM armed planes were sent off against the SA-21 installation adjacent our borders and covering a significant part of sea space we wanted to search and one of our own bases. It was not long before we detected our first wave of interceptors and their AIM 120s, easily outclassing our old sparrows and mica, but our far out pickets skimming the deck in wait took their share of kills and on occasion our F16s toting sparrow pursued AIM120n exhausted enemy and reducing their numbers further. But our losses were significant and the SCUD did start coming in, with a few getting thru and causing minor damage to one air base. The enemy were first to get an upper hand and we had to concede they had a minor victory over us, but the plan was for the long term and did seem to be holding, so we pushed on. Our objective transport group was detected and with less enemy fighter numbers and with EW assistance we commenced waves of ARM and harpoon attacks initially by our air groups then as our surface groups could be brought to bare from surface as well. After still quite intense action we significantly slowed and damaged our target with one escort sunk and and gained our minimum victory. But we needed a complete stop to their progress to gain a battle win and continued the attacks. Finally we got the win. With the current Russia Ukraine war I decided to step back in Harpoon time to 10 Sep 2014 and take on the CV32 scenario "Eastern Questions" The scenario description: The cease fire has been broken by the hostile actions of the pro Russian separatist rebels in the southeastern parts of Ukraine. Fighting erupted again in the last several hours. The rebels are refusing to abandon their weapons and are laying claim to the self-proclaimed regions of Luhansk Peoples Republic and Donetsk Peoples Republic for themselves. The Russians have meanwhile strongly protested the assertion that they caused the airliner shootdown, describing it as a subversive and disgusting NATO plot. Moreover they claim the Sea Breeze maritime exercise being undertaken by NATO forces in the Black Sea is a cover for an offensive operation. +++SPOILER ALERT+++ Opening up the war map a quick glance showed that a quick glance was not going to be a viable method of reading the situation, and time freeze (zero time) was instigated. A significant number of our fighters were loaded up and ready to go, some where fueled but no weapons. Opposing us intelligence indicated a significant number of fighters and attack aircraft so most of our fighter defence was put in the air and allocated patrol areas close to the front. Remaining fighters were lined up for interceptor loadouts. Ground attack craft were also sent forward under cover of the fighters and looking for the many armoured enemy units on our land and wary of their numerous SAM. We did have on hand a very nice number of EW SU24 and a handy number of SU24 ground attack craft loaded up with ARM loadouts so these also took off looking at damaging the enemy eyes. The early advance of a fighter wave soon proved worthwhile, not in combating incoming interceptors but potent missile attacks on our armoured units and bases. Losses occurred but not desperate losses. New significant threats continually appeared needing constant re assignments of our fighters, only the ground attack groups were able to settle in and stay on their original course and target. Soon we were nibbling away at the enemy ground units and convoys, SAM sites and radar. The enemy was weakening and we obtained a minimum victory, but at a significant cost so going for a complete win was not guaranteed success. The general strategy of providing air cover, now mostly picking off incoming aircraft ground attacks, and gradually concentrating our own ground attacks on key groups was continued and finally paid off. AAR: NACV4 Side: Blue On we go. This is the first scenario of this battleset I try. maybe I would be better to start with 1GIU, but IIR each one has its own story. The setup is really interesting: I´m used to play Cold War scenarios and never played a scen in which the Russians build a coalition with European forces. fascinating setup. My first steps are to set up formation patrols, thus no base will fall victim to a surprise attack out of the blue sky. Next step is to bring the long range recon birds and the bombers into waiting positions.

AAR The Second Crimea War, HDS 1 Battleset, Med, Ukrainian side This is an interesting setup. written back in 1992, there was some prophecy in it. The Ukrainian Navy is much more powerful then it ever was was in reality, though. In this scenario Ukraine has a Kiev Class Carrier and a Kirov Class Battlecruiser. On we go. Shortly after scenario start my two AKI Okean recce vessels are sunk by missile attacks. Some of those missiles were Shipwreck SSMs. Thus coming from either an Oscar Class SSGN or some heavy cruiser. Other missiles were air launched, indicating that there are Fulcrums. Few minutes later: The first air-to-air engagement: I lose one Flanker due to a very long range ATA missile. There must be Foxhounds over there. The second Flankers closes in, downs to Foxhounds and is shot down, too. This looks like there is a very tough battle ahead. A hostile Carrier Battle Group, just entering the Black Sea, has been identified! It launches a swarm of missiles towards my Kirov SAG. These are the landing boats, heavily guarded by Cruisers and Frigates. My Kiev launches its Sandbox SSMs at this group but this fails: I get only one escort. Bad shots. My first Backfire attack, conducted by four bombers, fails: all 12 Kingsfish ASMs are shot down. Certainly there is aKirov Class BCGN or a Slava Class CG around. First summary: Lost 10 aircraft so far, downed 31. Lost three ships, sunk one. The next attack wave: six Fencer bomber closing in on my carrier group. The Yaks do their job and down five, Kievs SAMs destroy the remaining intruder. Sadly, this last Fencer kills one of the scarce AEW Helix helos. I attack with six Backfires the Kusnetzov carrier, the heart of the problem. 18 more Kingfish missiles. Another marauding Foxhound downed. The Kingfish missiles are all destroyed. Four more Flankers coming in, obviously launched by the carrier. Ambushed them with two pairs of my Flankers and got them all. This was a major air victory and the Kusnetzov carrier cannot have many ac left. Two Foxhounds are coming it. Amos missiles streaking towards a pair of Flankers! Bo go to afterburner, will it be enough? Yes! Missiles miss! Now it is my turn. I want to chase down this Foxhounds . Grilled them! My Flankers get both of them. Alas, there are two more coming in. No, it is only one. But it gets one Flanker and is killed by the remaining one. I still haven´t regained the initiative when it comes to ship vs ship. Still there are two SAGs closing towards the Crimea from the East. And the Kusnetzov group is coming in from the South. I need to deal with those groups. Three ASM armed Yaks are launched in order to attack the leading hostile group coming from the East. It consists of Tarantul Missile boats. dangerous vs ships but good to kill with ASMs. The body count looks well, though: downed 55 ac, lost 12 in return. I hope I got most Russian´s fighters and now can aggressively make use of my Backfire squadron. Success! Two out of three Tarantuls are sunk. Vectoring three subs towards the Northbound Kusnetzov group, two vs the Westbound groups. Fatal mistake! What a blunder: forgot about my only Bear D recce bird which was rather close to the Kusnetzov group. And forgot about possible reamining fighters on this group. A pair of Flankers aggressively chased and downed my Bear. This chasing for AEW birds is one HC trade mark. It gets worse: Undetected, four hostile Flankers closed in on another recce bird, a Badger, and kill it. This AI is REALLY nasty and hard to beat. A piar of Flankers is heading for revenge, but both are killed. Lesson learnt: do not attack four fighters with two fighters. A pair of Fulcrums coming in from the South. So the Kusnetzov still has them both, Flucrums and Flankers. This time I act more clever: The Fulcrums are ambushed and shot down by two pairs of Flankers. Meanwhile my carrier group has to defend again group after group of Yaks. So far it works. Ok, time for a pause.
