Evening lads, I've attached a new scenario with a new version of the ANWDB for anyone who wants to test it. This is based on the current uprising in Libya and is based on the assumption that the town of Misurata has been captured by Gadaffi troops. Any and all feedback on this is greatly appreciated. Well I tried this by dropping them from a Lynx helicopter. Worked like a charm at least vs Styx missiles. I wonder how many nations can do this? Later D

Afternoon gents, I'm looking for any and all information on the ability of helicopters [specifically shipborne] that can deploy decoys in order to provide target deception/seduction. In the ideal scenario, a helicopter such as a Lynx or Seahawk will take off from the ship carrying a number of decoys such as DLF/SLQ-49. The helicopter would then lay a line of these decoys that would confuse an adversary into thinking that a group of ships [namely yours] is somewhere else. I haven't heard of helicopters from any navy being able to do what could be a very useful capability. Thanks in advance D

There is significant interest in Europe for the creation of a No Fly Zone. When I last checked trends a few months ago, it reported that France gets about 10% of it's oil from Libya, Italy about 20 to 25%. It's also important to note that while aircraft can fly from Sicily, France currently has the only carrier operating in the region at the moment. Vinson is in the Arabian Gulf while Enterprise is in the Red Sea [although I'd guess that Egypt is letting them do their thing atm]. So there's more economic justification from a European standpoint for the creation of a zone. I read a news report today that said the UK would support strikes against Libya should Gadaffi use chemical weapons but from what I've been able to glean thus far he may not need to with rebel forces on the run like they are. No problem. It's going to be a longer term project anyway. I've just started redoing my country annex after a screw up a few weeks ago wiped them all out. Also just implemented the first version of a new naming convention and updated a bunch of platforms. Later D

Tony is mostly correct. The two DBs are products of the time available to us. Darren, by the simple virtue of having a regular job, is able to dedicate more time to the DB than myself, who's gone usually on the whim of the government. I don't have the time to do the indepth research that Darren does so I use the Masters Annex that is developed and updated by a small core of players. I'm able to respond to emails and occasionally do check in to a few forums [this being one of them]. Contacting me isn't so much of a problem but time is. When I'm pulling a watch work pretty much comes to a halt. When I'm on days [as when I'm the XO] then I can devote more time to it. Later D

If you check carefully you'll notice that the Roland missile uses 'command line of sight' guidance where as the SA-15 uses command guidance. The bottom line is that the SA-15s radars are much better at picking up low flying Tomahawks than the Roland. In fact, Roland 1 is more or less only daylight capable, which NORMALLY means that the system was only good against aircraft. Later D

When you create a scenario, each side needs to be 'told' what to do. To accomplish this, you need to set up missions for each side. In your particular case you need to set up a transit type mission [if you are simply going from Point A to Point B] or a patrol mission [to loop around the waypoints]. This will give the AO [automatic operator, aka 'the computer'] something to do. It will automatically defend itself [providing that it can see the incoming weapons....sensors are also set during mission building]. The 'Protect' VC isn't very flexible for a human played side since you technically 'win' the VC from the outside since your unit is 100% intact. A 'Station' VC is more ideal if you are conducting a transit mission or a 'Protect Station' if you are conducting a patrol. What kind of problems are you having with it? Also keep in mind that all missions created by the scenario editor are deleted when the player selects that side. This allows the player to do things his own way and not have any help from the scenario editor. Are you using a Tico with the Mk26 launcher or a VLS? This can greatly determine the balance of your scenario. Later D

Is it just me or am I finding all these 'people's revolutions' happening at the same time more than a coincidence? Enterprise was supposed to go to the Gulf and now Vinson is stuck there while Enterprise cruises the Red Sea waiting for something to happen in Libya. Yesterday I just got word that the US is ferrying an additional 400 Marines to USS Kearsage now somewhere between Cyprus and Libya. Anyone else notice that the big players like Syria and Iran are not having these kind of difficulties? Later D

I believe that the Russians have an ARM version of AA-10. Anti-AWACS maybe but it seems a bit short ranged for that. You'd have to run the gauntlet of CAP and the AWACS screaming for help just to get a shot off. Later D

I've been hashing this out on the China-Defense forum for the last several weeks. There's a segment of posters there that seem to believe that the carrier was towed to China with an engine plant intact or they had one installed while she was dry docked. There is currently no agreement on the length of the dry docking period but either way it would take a considerable amount of time [months at least] to install engines, power train, shafting, and screws. I find it highly unlikely that nobody would notice that kind of work going on. A cam shaft for a large diesel plant can be as long as a house. I just got off a Coast Guard vessel that's a fraction of the size of Varyag. She had one of her engines replaced by a brand new, fresh out of the box unit and it took 7 weeks in dry dock. Well trained the NKs they may be, but the fact remains that compared to the ROK they are pretty much armed with sticks and stones. I doubt any widescale attack by the NKs may reach a few miles into ROK territory but that woud be it. In fact the only reason I believe the NKs are pursuring nuclear weapons is to even their huge technological disadvantage. Even then, it might not do the job because of the similar response that would surely follow in the form of tactical nukes. The big factor here is China. They look at North Korea as a buffer between it and the west. The more crazy these crazies act [and IMHO they really are in a separate reality] then the more likely the chance of a fight that the NKs would most likely lose. China probably wouldn't intervene on a large military scale prefering to force a change of government that would result in a less radical regime. Many people would be shot, but from what I understand the NKs are used to that. As for popular opinion, the American one doesn't count. It's not their country. It's the ROK popular opinion that counts and if popular opinion wants paypack, then payback it'll be. There'll be losses but that's to be expected in any case. Personally I think the ROK can probably handle it on their own. Later D

This is the second time there's been a muted response from the ROK. Governments that don't protect their people usually don't last very long. Good morning, Seems that one of the few surviving insects that didn't make it into the daily diet of the North Korean population found itself up someones A** this morning causing DPRK forces to shell ROK forces on Yeonpyeong Island at approximately 1430 local today. ROK forces conducted counter-battery operations and fighters were vectored into the area around the island. 2 ROK Marines were killed and 10 more personnel were wounded. There was the usual amount of damage caused by approximately 200 rounds of artillery. ROK artillery fired approximately 80 rounds into North Korea. The shelling happens during the annual Hoguk military exercise. There have been the usual political announcements and market fallout. Some extra information provided by Stratfor. Later D

So it looks like they are trying to get her back in service eh? I'm wondering if they have to re-engine her? That kind of surgery would be noticed because they'd have to cut open the hull to get at the spaced. I don't know if the ship had a propulsion system installed or not prior to her being towed to China. A ship like that will provide them with invaluable experience in carrier operations. Won't do diddly squat for them in ASW however, which is their real weakness. Maybe they'll use the VLS tubes for their DF-21 ASBM? Later D

With regards to the Millennium mount.... I think the footprint is actually slightly smaller than the 76mm gun. This could be the palletised [sp?] version that was mentioned in the Guide to World Naval Weapons Systems however. It looks 'bolt on' and I don't see any deck penetration, just the stiffeners for the deck mounting. Later D

I was informed that they have bearthing with up to 8 guys to a room....damn... Security was quite high on USS Boone, but the crew seemed very friendly and willing to answer some questions. One of the fire control men told me that there was to be no replacement for the Mk13 mount. In addition to the twin .50 cals above the bridge, there was also two single .50s on the flight deck and an M240B next to the 76mm gun. Compare this to the one or two crew members of the other NATO ships that were armed with assault rifles. In addition to the engine room, we also walked past a variety of fire fighting equipment, more than I've seen on on other US ships [the Brits are the all time champ when it comes to that]. Also, there was no helo embarked on USS Boone, the port hangar contained a TEU used to store extra food for the Africa leg of the trip, while the starboard side was the gym, which is apparently now standard in the class.
