The PlayersDB Project
We've released a new version of the Harpoon3 PlayersDB. Today’s date is 08-01-01, so the new edition is PlayersDB 8.1.1 Why have we done this? Why not just continue to add new platforms to previous PlayersDB editions like we've always done? This release adds a powerful new feature to help both novice players and veterans alike. Harpoon 3 has been unique in its ability in utilizing customized ready times for aircraft instead of a standard 30 or 60 minute re-arming period. Unfortunately, databases are unable to display this information to the player. Today, this exclusive function has been added to the PlayersDB so that every loadout for every aircraft will now display the exact number of minutes required for that aircraft to re-arm. This change was made specifically to accommodate all the requests received from new players and has been implemented through the use of the Official AGSI Harpoon ANW Database editor. In order to take advantage of this valuable new function, scenarios must be re-built with this version or else the function will not be activated. Rather than run the risk of messing up someone's prior work, we've released a new version. Just continue to use the PlayersDB version specified by the scenario designer and everything will run exactly as written by the author. Get the PlayersDB-ANW on HarpDB, SubSim, or ughHQ. Get the PlayersDB on HarpDB, SubSim, or ughHQ. The unique features and advantages of the PlayersDB remain unchanged and include: A design philosophy of "Never delete - only append" . No more crash concerns due to rock-solid stability. Ships, planes, and subs have been indexed by country for your convenience Players can now see the launch altitude of the weapons. No more guessing at the launch parameters. Numerous special weapons and special platforms for designers. If you would like to see a special capability or platform for your scenario, let us know and it will be added for you. There is ample room for specialty units and player requests. One player has already been accommodated. He wanted to try Soviet Sub-Launched Land Attack missiles from Charlie-class SSGNs so we modified the torpedo tubes to allow him to test this new feature. Old versions of the DB will be retained. This is the only certain way to guarantee compatibility. Once a scenario is built, IT STAYS BUILT unless or until the author decides that he wants to adapt it to a newer version. This means that the scenario will play EXACTLY as the author intended. Comprehensive descriptions. Detailed text for subs, ships, aircraft, and weapons. Comprehensive mine model. Mines can now be swept by minesweepers and helicopters. Pre-configured Installations. Pre-arranged and precisely measured installations such as air bases can be inserted with a single click. A South American Arms Race?
A South American Arms Race? Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 By ANDREW DOWNIE/SAO PAULO Time First it was Venezuela, spending $4 billion on Russian fighter planes, Kalashnikovs and perhaps even submarines. Then it was Brazil, in August announcing a 53% increase in its military budget for 2008, the biggest such increase in more than a decade. The competition is still in the early stages but when two of Latin America's nouveau riche oil powers start splashing out on weapons, alarm bells ring over an arms race. Related Articles Indeed, Chavez's spending spree has given Brazil's long-dormant arms industry a bit of a political kick-start. Says Brazilian Senator Jose Sarney, a regular critic of Venezuela's president: "Hugo Chavez's armed forces have ordered 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles, 50 attack and transport helicopters, smart bombs, 24 Sukhoi Su-30 fighter planes. There is also talk of them buying nine submarines from Russia for $3 billion. It's very worrying. As Venezuela turns itself into a major military power, it obliges the other nations in South America to increase the power of their own forces. [An arms race] sadly seems to be getting under way." Not that Brazil and Venezuela have territory to fight over. Venezuela's border beefs are with its other neighbors, Colombia (over gas-rich waters) and Guyana (over areas west of the Essequibo river). He is unlikely to use arms to solve those disputes, either. His army is not as battle hardened as Colombia's — which has been fighting a prolonged civil war; and any intervention against Guyana is likely to draw in the U.S. and Guyana's former colonial ruler, Britain. What the military build-up does, however, is give Chavez's Venezuela added prestige in the continental battle for political supremacy. Chavez has brought together South America's radical leftists under his socialist banner; while Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva leads a more measured coalition of social democrats. The two men are friends but both countries are getting used to being at the political and economic vanguard of South America. Military strength helps with that. Brazil's past obsession was potential conflict with its southern neighbor, Argentina. That has passed into history. Venezuela's military spending, however, has forced Brazil to realize that its security needs have shifted. It must now protect its jungle frontiers in the north and west from the depredations of drug smugglers. And it must also police the territorial waters that are home to regular new finds of oil and gas. The forces it needs to do that have suffered from neglect and disrepair. A recent editorial in the newspaper O Estado de Sao Paulo said that almost two-thirds of the air force's planes and half of the navy's ships are unfit for their intended use. Lula has asked Brazil's Congress to allocate 10.13 billion reais for its 2008 military budget, or around $5.6 billion at the current exchange rate. Brazil has what it calls a "dissuasive" defense policy and the majority of its spending will go to non-aggressive weaponry such as transport planes, helicopters, communications equipment and armored vehicles, according to Defense Ministry officials and analysts. Around $70 million has been set aside for early work on a nuclear submarine. "There are very real security concerns that are being neglected," says Martin Joyce, the South America defense analyst for Jane's. "One is the Amazon region where drug traffickers are operating with impunity. Secondly, we are also seeing an increased presence of Colombian guerrillas and that requires mobility and that is whey we see helicopters and military airlift high on the priority list. Then there is the new oil reserves and part of the reason for the procurement of a nuclear submarine is because they said they need to protect those resources." "Venezuela," says Joyce, "comes fairly low down the list." But Chavez does give a face to the race and an impetus for nationalistic Brazilian politicians to vote for an increase in the military budget. Indeed, part of the proposed new funds will go toward resuscitating the country's dormant arms industry. "We had 1% [share] of the world's arms market in the 1970s and 1980s," says Reserve Colonel Geraldo Lesbat Cavagnari, coordinator of the Strategic Studies Group at Unicamp university. "We need to recuperate that industry and invest in it. That means producing for the Brazilian armed forces." Military powers controlled seven of South America's 10 countries as recently as 1980 but even then cross-border conflict was rare. Everyone would like it to stay that way. A regional arms race is hardly the best way to keep the peace.

Defect Name: Units do not move to new patrol zones
If you play, you're a member of the community (whether you like it or not ). Your messages don't appear automatically since they first need approval from the site admins. If you play more versions of Harpoon, I think that you'd find that some versions crash more than others. Perhaps there should be a new standard of reference -- "Harpoon-quality". I don't think that it is reasonable to say that all the problems posted for HCE are easily noticeable. Take, for example, these Formation Editor anomalies. If a person sets up his patrols and just leaves things for the entire game, he won't notice them in the slightest. Only if he tinkers mid-game will he be in a position to notice something. Since you are interested in both ANW and HCE, I strongly encourage you to try out the ANW Demo (ftp://ftp.matrixgames.com/pub/Harpoon3ANW/Harpoon_3_Gouge_Demo_1.exe). This is the public face of ANW since many folks will likely try it out before purchase. Go ahead and play it and see if you can identify some of the problems listed at: * Known Harpoon [ANW] Issues http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42076 You can decide for yourself if the problems are self-evident or if they are obscure. Since you haven't played it before, you would be in a perfectly objective position as to the seriousness of any problems you encounter; whether they pop out at you or if you have to dig hard to find them. There are 8 tutorial sessions and 6 scenarios for you to try. That should be plenty to prove your theory of "things showing up if you play them all the way through". Unfortunately, there is no HCCE demo available at the moment.

New scenario for Harpoon3 and Harpoon ANW
The 290th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! 3.0 May Day First of May 1982 was when hostilities finally broke out around the Falklands. South Georgia had been liberated by the British and, early in the morning, a lone Vulcan bomber cut the runway at Port Stanley in half. The Argentineans had their army dug in around the Falklands, had attack planes dispersed around the islands, and the Air force and Navy were ready to meet the British forces. In the next three days, the General Belgrano and Sheffield were lost, air attacks proved the effectiveness of the Sea Harriers and SAMs; but also demonstrated their limitations and damaged many ships in the task force. Victory could go either way. Author: Freek Schepers With over 123,000 PlayersDB scenarios downloaded in the last 34 weeks alone, the PlayersDB has proven itself the unequivocal players' favourite. Defect Name: Units do not move to new patrol zones
I agree. I remember seeing these problems in HC2002 and HCG. I never reported them at that time because I considered them relatively minor and didn't want to distract from the main effort. Perhaps I should have. Regardless, I still think that they are relatively minor. Now, this isn't a personal attack or criticism of anyone, but no one else reported these bugs, either. The lists at: ScenShare (http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/FilesOfScenShare/database) GameSquad (http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25815) HarpGamer (http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?showtopic=169) have been up for years. Anyone could have reported these behaviors at any time. The point is, no one mentioned them. They don't get fixed if someone doesn't report it. It appears as though you've followed through all the various incarnations of this game and have kept track of the features and functions as they changed. That's really superb. Please feel free to add your base of knowledge to the current effort. No one's stopping you from reporting on any of these sites. The rate at which things get fixed in HCE is positively mind-boggling when compared to other versions. A comprehensive list of problems hasn't even been started for HCE because they get fixed faster than the list could be edited. Other lists just grow, and grow,... Of course, it would be nice if a patch was released so that the repairs could be confirmed...

Defect Name: No Standoff attack possible
Yes, sir. Every day and twice on Sunday. I had a thought on possible causes. Could it be expecting a nuclear weapon in the Weapons Allocation window? The game did not grant me nuclear release at that time and I have not checked to see if a nuclear weapon would appear in the window if I hit Alt+F3, either.

Defect Name: Patrol zones do not match positions
I am involved with many of the bug reports for both ANW and HCE and I'll say that the stuff I've seen for HCE is comparatively minor compared to the game-killing whoppers I've run into. Lots of this stuff is simply quirky behaviour. The problem mentioned in this thread is one of them. It's annoying, but can, for the most part, be avoided if the player is diligent. Of the 15 or so reports for HCE, only 3-4 might be significant and cannot be worked-around. Compare this to the 30-40 monstrous ones out of the ANW list of 140+ and we're not even talking about apples and oranges, anymore. We're talking about ants and elephants, now.

H3 Multiplayer Server up Again
Today, we welcomed the SeaQueen into the MP community. We wanted a quick introductory ASuW game so selected the ever popular Dawn Patrol, made with the Harpoon community's favourite database, the PlayersDB. SeaQueen took the Russians while I took the Norwegians. We took most of our time stalking each other's missile boats with the radar off. It was a very suspenseful experience. I stumbled across one Nanuchka with PTM Hugin and immediately activated my radar while releasing a full salvo of Penguin at her. My Penguins struck home, but her return fire also claimed the Hugin. To add insult to injury, she had discovered PTM Vidar and Mysing, too. Unbeknownst to me, SS-N-9 Sirens were inbound for them, too. All three boats were lost and the game was very much in flux. I had to kill one more Nanuchka without losing 2 of my boats or I would lose. As I combed the waters for the other missile boats, sonar detected one. Instead of turning on my radar for a second Penguin missile salvo, I elected to engage with guns. I smashed the second boat and was soon awarded victory. A really good game, SeaQueen. Thanks for the match and to HarpGamer for hosting it. Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.

H3 Multiplayer Server up Again
AlvinS came looking for another match, today. The last time we clashed, we did ASuW so this time, he wanted some ASW. We selected the ever popular Power Sweep, made with the Harpoon community's favourite database, the PlayersDB. We each took a turn playing both sides. The most memorable part of the session was when I was playing NATO and stalking his Russian subs. SSN Swiftsure got a sonar conact near her baffles and panicked. She fired a pair of Spearfish at the contact she believed to be tracking her before evading. Unfortunately, the sonar contact proved to be a false one. And, in running away, she had made enough noise to be counter-detected by a Tango-class boat which promptly dropped a nuke on her head! However, my SSK Kobben managed to save the day as she crept up on the surviving SSGN Charlie and Tango boats to sink both of them with a single volley of 3 Tp 61 torpedoes, each. A really good game, Alvin. Thanks for the match and to HarpGamer for hosting it. Anyone looking for an MP game can drop a line here or look for us on HarpGamer pHp chat room or the HG mIRC chat room.
