Philosophy question for the players and, especially, the scenario authors: Should the HCDB2 include fire control radars on a platform (it presently does not) even if there is no direct link between an FCR and its attendant weapon system? (In other words, destroying an FCR does not mean you disable the weapon associated with it, which is largely the case now in HCE/HUCE regardless of what we do in the DB.)

You would be quite right in thinking that adding complexity and number of players tends to endanger game viability. The KISS principle works well with H4 games. The down side, of course, is that the small scale game tends to be less creative, and more of an exercise in comparing statistics.

New version uploaded. Export went ok and tested ok in the SE. The issue was with magazines in the Installations annex. I had to delete every magazine entry in that annex to make it work, and I suspect the particular problem was related to the number of same name entries (i.e. 'zzdonotuse') conflicting with available magazines.

Not me personally. I've just trying it out now though. Same here. kmart, I don't know if you have a particular scenario in mind, but there a number of good possibilities in the High Tide materials.

Further comments, this time from the perspective of the Blue (Soviet) player. In my opinion, victory was going to be very difficult for the Blue player to achieve in this scenario. It would be difficult for Blue to achieve a 'tactical victory' (no damage to the merchant, <25% damage to the warship) and virtually impossible to achieve a 'decisive victory' (no damage to either vessel). The Sposobnyyy's Volna (NATO SA-N-1a) surface-to-air missiles are less than satisfactory in the air defence role, let alone in the ASuW role. Mind you, he could potentially bring a lot of firepower to bear (two missiles per director, for four in all) but he would have to close within lethal range of Sahand to do so and expose himself to serious damage. The situation is only aggravated by the fact that the merchant lies between Sposobnyyy and the aggressor.

A new version of the HCDB2 or Harpoon Commander's Edition Database 2 (HCDB2-161204) is now available. This particular version, is the inaugural version of this new DB for HCE, which builds upon the 10 years of HCDB success and takes on a new focus to exploit new capabilities within the sim. The file is available from the download section of this website (www.harpgamer.com). Please note that we are now just including the commondb.res file to reduce the size of the download and simplify things. Just rename your current commondb.res file (such as commondb_original.res, for example) and copy the new one into the HCG root directory. Keeping the old file will permit you to easily switch back and forth between databases. You do not need to import to play the sim using the new HCDB. You will need to import if you want to use it in the Platform Editor. More details can be found in the FAQ at our website. What is the HCDB2? The HCDB2 is a new version of the long standing Harpoon Commander's Edition Database (or HCDB). Unlike its predecessor, HCDB2 departs from the previous standard of maintaining backwards compatibility with legacy scenarios. The platforms (ships, submarines, aircraft, installations, sensors, and weapons) contained in the HCDB2 cover the period from the year 1980 until sometime in the near future (say, about 2025). There may also be philosophy changes in certain aspects of how the DB is structured or how it approaches things like electronic warfare, guidance/seeker generational advances, etc. The most obvious change will be more differentiation between and identification of platforms by point in time (so that a single entry would only contain weapons, sensors or loadouts relevant to that point in time, e.g. 1985, instead of all weapons, sensors, etc available to it over a long period of time). HCDB2 database content continues to be licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 Unported License. Kuznetsov could never hope to produce the kind of sortie rate that is capable from an onshore airfield at the best of times. With only three (maybe two?) MiG-29KR and the Su-33s only carrying a pair of 500 kg iron bombs, this was going to be even worse. Meanwhile ... Russian MiG-29 Crash: More than Meets the Eye (RUSI)

From the perspective of the Red player, I think it was the correct decision to attack and attempt to disable or destroy the warship first. Ordinarily, and from a philosophical point of view, I would typically advocate pitting your strongest weapons against the enemy's weakest defences, but in this case, there was really only one opponent. The merchant ship would be, for all intents and purposes, completely defenceless once the Kashin had been put out of action. Attacking the Kashin with the extended reach of the Sea Killer antiship missiles and following up with the 4.5 inch gun was absolutely the correct move, imho. [The fact that there is unlimited ammo for the 4.5 inch gun is no small factor to consider. Noting that she had a little over 300 rounds available in real life, there is a possibility in some scenario that Sahand could have run out of ammo and been unable to continue the fight or destroy the merchant.] If nothing else, Eric can take some comfort in the fact that Sahand met her own fate a year to the day later, on 19 April 1988.

This is somewhat of a major overhaul, and I don't expect the first few iterations of the HCDB2 will be terribly reliable for scenario authors. I am, for example, weeding out things like duplicated installations, useless relics like SAM barges, some hypotheticals, etc and there will be a period where the DB will be in a major state of flux while I finalize certain things like the intended philosophy for issues like electronic warfare, guidance/seeker generations, etc.

The Project 61 (NATO Kashin) class ships built at Nikolaev received the Volga navigation radar vice Don-2 from Smyshlenyyy onward (so, from 1968), including Sposobnyyy. Units constructed at Leningrad received the Volga nav radar later, probably in the mid 1970s. There will always be some discrepancies in H4 data annexes (or database in a computerized version of Harpoon), whether because of differing sources, outdated information, or human error. What matters, however, is that the game proceeds on the basis of the information supplied or agreed upon by the parties involved, most preferably at game start and only later if it is mutually acceptable and doesn't substantially or materially change the course of events.
