Varunastra was originally identified as project NST-188, and unsurprisingly, also badly delayed. I have little doubt that there has been some R&D overlap. I don't see much evidence of the latter. Maybe its heavily scripted and you simply make sure the required aircraft (for a strike or intercept) are available and launched. Rather than executing the mission as such.
