Yes, from what I've seen, it was actually Nimitz and she was operating in the Arabian Sea. This makes sense, as Desert One was located in northwestern Iran. I have also seen references to an 800 mile trip from the carrier to that staging point. Working backwards from the nearest landmark (Tabas), this puts the carrier at more or less at the mouth of the Gulf of Oman, which I also understand is in the usual operating area for US Navy carrier strike groups in the theater.

Pete, your best bet might be to take each carrier in turn and examine their deployment history. Bit of a chore, but there aren't that many and you will get a better feel for where they were at the time. For example, the most basic research tells me: USS Forrestal was in the Med for most of the early 1980s USS Saratoga was in SLEP from 1980-84, and then returned to the Med until another overhaul in '87 USS Ranger was in WESTPAC during the early 80s, and appears to have operated in the IO regularly, and of course was involved in Op Earnest Will in 1987 etc

Iran's military threats are generally laughable, its true, but even their idle threat is enough to mess with the market, and it may not be the Stennis or even a US warship that actually gets attacked (if ever). Plenty of tankers made it through the Hormuz during the 'Tanker War' but it was generally unpleasant and more than a few civilians died.

Its not that an armed merchant is not a useful tool for scenario building (we have some already), but current game mechanics prevent a neutral ship (such as a unidentified merchant secretly carrying Klub) from suddenly going 'rogue' and attacking you as a player. It would have to be an enemy ship (e.g. Red) from the start of the game and therefore relatively easily identified and destroyed. There are some ways to fudge this a bit, but the general limitation remains (for now at least). That being the case, I'm not in any hurry to add it as a hypothetical platform in the DB. Especially as space is dwindling fast.

Yep, as stated above, you need HCCW-110114 or later, which you can find here. Just unzip into your main HCE directory to replace the 'commondb.res' file. See the FAQ for more details on that process.

The process is fairly simple, and explained here by Enrique as well as in the Download and FAQ sections of this website. As for Klub (SS-N-27 Sizzler) armed merchant ships, I am guessing you are referring to the ISO containerized versions of the missile and launcher that made media attention a year or so ago. I'm unaware of any sale of the system, as advertised, and in the interim, I am doubtful it would add much to the game. Maybe if and when we can delve deeper into the mechanics of sides (neutrals, blue, red, etc). Specs wouldn't be a problem.

HCE is already a 'click fest' so no, I don't mind the extra clicks at all. Probably a force of habit more than anything. Twenty years of the same behaviour will do that to a person.
