  1. What do you make of Adm Willard's comment a year ago that the system had reached IOC? While I think a healthy skepticism is warranted - especially given my opinion of the fundamental purpose of the DF-21D - the US Navy seems to be taking it seriously. That, and a lot of developing Chinese systems that would support it, e.g. over the horizon ocean surveillance radars, long range UAVs, etc.

  6. Maybe with some of the fancier toys, but much of the projected air wing is already here. As far as the budgetary woes go, I am a tad skeptical of the 'doom and gloom' predicitions of the future for the US DoD budget. I figure about the only thing to truly threaten the US DoD budget is world peace, and I don't see that breaking out anytime soon.

  10. From DefenseNews [excerpt] CV32: I don't expect it to be the F-22, but the implication that performance suffers unless operating with internal weapons and fuel carriage only, is troubling. Especially here, where the expectation is that the F-35A will act in the sovereignty protection role.

You might find more info at Warship Projects Discussion Boards. Those completed in the mid to late 1970s might still have been in decent shape. Admiral Chabanenko, entered service 1999, Admiral Basisty, scrapped '94; Admiral Kucherov, scrapped '93. One is still around, Smetlivy. Several others survived into the mid to late 1990s, even after the Soviet collapse, so no reason to believe more would not have. Lots of fast attack craft possibilities, and of course, submarines are fun.

  17. Patrick Howard's scenario So You Think You Can Dance is one of them. Eventually I'll get my AAR done for that that one.
  18. Considerably longer than that. IIRC, the original delivery date was to have been in late 2008. It also shows something else. Expect to be subjected to "price exploitation" (to put it mildly) the longer the project drags out.
  19. Certainly within the realm of possibility. I will have a look. Enrique, do you have an online source for the IOC dates, conversions, etc?
