Torpedoing neutral whale
So what's the odds that PETA was in the Kilo, making sure you didn't 'do' a whale? Don Why would PETA (People for the Eating of Tasty Animals)be in a Kilo? They should be in the zodiacs scooping up the floating whale meat

HUE questions from a Newbie
Hi all, I am a returning Harpoon player, but this is my first time out with H3/ANW/HUE. I am working of the 2nd scenario in the classics GUIK set. I am encountering the following puzzling behaviour: 1) I attempt to ready one of the Lynx choppers with ASuW missiles. It reports that it will take 6 hours (is this really how long it takes to swap out a weapons loadout - I don't know I am just asking). Anyway, I tells me it will take 6 hours. BUt it still lists both Lynx choppers with 2 torpedoes loaded. At some point after some hours, if I check on the Lynx again, it still shows them both as having 2 torpedoes loaded. There is no indication in the game that tells me which chopper is being reloaded (I noticed the same sort of hevaviour with other mounts in the game and with torpedo tubes). BUT the problem is that at the end of the reload period, both Lynx still show 2 torpedoes. And there is often an erratic ready time that vassilates between 5-8 and 20 some minutes. What counter-manded my order to load the ASuW missiles on the lynx? How do I prevent that? Can't I have one Lynx with torpedos as a back up sub-hunter and have the other as a ship hunter? I do have the frigate tasked with ASW duty with a task for the Lynx. Is this what is doing it to me? Is it re-tasking both Lynx for the ASW task in the formation editor? Is there not a way to tell the sim that I want to reserve one chopper for other duties? What kind of feedback in the interface is there? 2) Sometimes one of the choppers which I have taken direct control of to go do some over-the horizon sniffing, suddenly clears its flight orders and heads for home. It is not BINGO fuel, it has weapons and sonobouys on board so it is not an "auto-return for fuel or rearm", so why does it take off like that? 3) WIth regards to #2, I have also had ships suddenly all clear the manuallu set way points and all head off in some other direction. What is causing that? I have turned the Staff handles navigation off, but this still happens. 4) Sometimes a ship will just sit and do nothing. I have watched one try to follow the course I set and then flicker between 0 kts and flank kts (the display is flickering as the number change so fast) but it goes no where and it is a devil to get it out of this behaviour. 5) Why do have have to keep re-selected a helo when I want to drop a sonobuoy? I drop one, the helo remains the selected unit and some time later I want to drop another one and it won't do it unless I re-click on the helo to "emphasize" the fact that it is selected. THen the buoys drop fine. 6) If I have data links one, and I have a surface ship locked up on my helo's radar and I select the FFG that launched the helo and target the ship that is on the helo's RADAR, why don't the Harpoon missles track to the ship correctly? Why do they fly off in extremely wrong directions and hit allied ships that are on the port and starboard rear quarters when the targeted ship is off the port bow? The ships that are hit should not even come into the target acquisition cone of the harpoons being fired, correct? Thanks in advance for the assist.

HUD 4 b8 - where is the download and other DB questions
Hi all, So I downloaded the b7 of the HUD 4( The most recent available in the downloads section) and installed it. It doesn't seem to have any scenarios with it, so I then wnet looking for scenarios. I foudn a few that say that they need the HUD 4 official release, and one that said it needs Hud 4 b8. But I don't see either of these available on this site. So I am looking for guidance. Newbie from spain
My personal advice (admittedly, from a non-ANW player) would be to explore the 'new' HUD4 database. Thanks again. I downloaded and installed this DB. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any scenarios installed with it. I am now looking to see what scenarios are available for down load to try with it.

Afaik, the author(s) of DB2000 claimed full compatibility only with v3.6.3. That database may or may not be fully compatible with other versions, and only the folks who made or play using the DB2000 could tell you for sure. In any case, the fan site that supported DB2000 for Harpoon 3 is now defunct. Two different databases created by different authors. To go into greater detail than that would be to invite some very 'colourful' opinions. And we'd rather not go there, so the official HarpGamer policy re PDB can be found here. Okay and thanks. So, since I am returning to Harpoon after what, 15 years, and am ignorant of the current issues with databases, IP, etc. What is the "best" (meaning having the most working scenarios with little or no issues (i.e. the most enjoyable)) database for HUE that one should try? To be frank, I have tried to use the tutorial scenarios supplied with the install of HUE and many of the missions have problems. The Orion in Mission VI (I think) is missing, In VII the air base to the south *never* shows up in the formation editor so that one can assign the threat axis, the KC-135 tanker that the F-16 is supposed to refuel from on one of the early tutorials is not in the scenario. It isn't in the air, and it isn't at the base to be launched there from. So, in short, my question is what databases should a returning player, who want to jump straight to HUE/ANW/whatever its correct name is so that I can enjoy learning this new incarnation of Harpoon while having to deal with the minimum of issue because of missing units, database-scenario-etc. mismatch, etc. In my ignorance, it looked like the PDB fit this bill. But I don't want to invest time in something that the community at large has major issues with. I want to learn on the mainstream databases. Thanks, SNAFU

!Holà quijote! The difference between all 3 is chronology, and improvement: -3.6.3 is the last occurence of Harpoon3 series. It's the latest version where you can have the famous DB2000 maintained by Ragnar Emsoy -3.7.0 starts a new naming convention, with the appendix "Advanced Naval Warfare" being added: it brings Harpoon3 to multiplayer, multi-databases management... -3.9.4 is the last occurence to bear the name Harpoon3 Advanced Naval Warfare, since 4th of November 2010, to celebrate the birthday of Harpoon long years ago, all pre-existing versions (HCE and ANW) were merged in one game, with all previous versions being added (e.g Harpoon 3.6.3) as well. Best regards, FG So does this mean that the DB2000 can be played with HUE? What makes DB2000 different that PDB?

Of databases and scenarios
Hi all, Can some one explain how the different databases relate to one another, to battlesets and to scenarios? I have read of the Players DB, and I downloaded it. But it warns that it will change some base files. Why would I want to do that? How will it affect using other databases? Will it prevent me from using the HUD? Thanks, Disregard, Backed up everything necessary and installed PDB. This resolved many issues I was having plying the tutorial missions that were installed with the DBs for HUE. Things were often missing or acted odd so that a tutorial mission could not be completed as described in the manual. Regards,

Returning player - a few initial questions
A question I can answer . If you are familiar with Windows Explorer, find your H3 directory and run the H3Launcher.exe program (I'm not on a computer with Harpoon right now so I may not have the name exactly right). There is a display tab where you can increase the size of the main game window for the next launch. Most experienced players always launch the game from this program. Hi Tony, That's perfect. Thanks!

Returning player - a few initial questions
Hi all, Bought a played the original Harpoon back in the day. Haven't played in a long time, but have tried the demos and am planning on purchasing the UE for H3/ANG. But I have a few questions. So I started the H3 demo, glanced a the manual and jumped in, as is my wont. I chose "Watch that first step":. No problem. Need to get those boomers safely on their way. I have 3 Orions and 3 CP-140 Aurora (not too familiar with the later, but we'll sort that out soon enough). and 2 WHECs and one DDG ASW helos. So make a long story shorter I place line of passive sonobouys, set up a pattern for the WHEC and DDG and begin escorting the boomers out with one WHEC proceeding them in the channel. 2 hours in a detect a sub in the SW. I use the Orion to place additional sonobouys and soon have him locked up. I drop 2 additional, active buoys just to make sure he knows some one is knocking on his hull. Then I hit my first real SNAFU with not reading the manual. I do manage to kill the sub (why doesn't it report an explosion?) but it take 4 torps to do so. Expectations/observations When I select the Orion or the Aurora, designate the sub for attack, and get the message asking if I want to close and attack - things don't fare too well. 1) The torps are dropped a ridiculously long ranges from the target. This is a soviet SNN. Its top speed is probably close or better that the 30 kts of the MK46 being dropped on it. These aren't my beloved MK48 ADCAPS that you can be a little "loosey-goosey" with when dealing with a Russian SSN (not to mention wire guide to compensate for his evasion). The MK 46s need to be dropped right on top of this guy to have reasonable chance of hitting. The planes were dropping up to 10 NM away. Not a chance unless the SSN driver is totally out to lunch. And I have this guy locked up, there is no error zone around this contact. 2) So I then take the Orion and have him fly right over the top of the contact and just as he passes over I execute the attack sequence, the torp is dropped and I appear to nail the sub. (no contact on SONAR). Questions: 1) The Aurora failed to drop torps on 2 occasions - not sure why. I used the exact same steps as for the Orion and the Orion dropped weps when I designated. They are at the same alt. 2) When I put down a single, long course line with only one way-point at the end of it and then manually release passive sonobuoys from the Orion I have no problems laying down the pattern I want. Then I try the same thing with the Aurora, it will only place a sonobuoy at a way point even if I designate a drop manually withthe "[" key. I have duplicated this a number of times. If I want to place a string with the Aurora, I need to designate a course with a way point at each place I want a sonobuoy and then hit the "[" when the plane is near that way point. The Orion needs no set of way points along the line to manually place the sonobuoys. Why? So far I love H3/ANW. I can see why some might complain about it being a little more slow, but I am happy with that to have the features. I have yet to finish, but I have another Aurora and Orion on deck, and I know my route for the boomers and how I will sanitize it. Just have to execute the plan. 3) Is it possible to increase the size of the main program display window. I have a very large LED monitor and the default size is pretty small and difficult to see easily. I know I can make new zoomed maps inside of the program window, but can the main H3 program window be increased in size to use more of my desktop?

Subs and full realism question
What would be nice is the ability to send an ELF message to a submerged sub. The response of the sub being to come up for a "chat".
