Major SNAFU
Hi all, Bought a played the original Harpoon back in the day. Haven't played in a long time, but have tried the demos and am planning on purchasing the UE for H3/ANG. But I have a few questions. So I started the H3 demo, glanced a the manual and jumped in, as is my wont. I chose "Watch that first step":. No problem. Need to get those boomers safely on their way. I have 3 Orions and 3 CP-140 Aurora (not too familiar with the later, but we'll sort that out soon enough). and 2 WHECs and one DDG ASW helos. So make a long story shorter I place line of passive sonobouys, set up a pattern for the WHEC and DDG and begin escorting the boomers out with one WHEC proceeding them in the channel. 2 hours in a detect a sub in the SW. I use the Orion to place additional sonobouys and soon have him locked up. I drop 2 additional, active buoys just to make sure he knows some one is knocking on his hull. Then I hit my first real SNAFU with not reading the manual. I do manage to kill the sub (why doesn't it report an explosion?) but it take 4 torps to do so. Expectations/observations When I select the Orion or the Aurora, designate the sub for attack, and get the message asking if I want to close and attack - things don't fare too well. 1) The torps are dropped a ridiculously long ranges from the target. This is a soviet SNN. Its top speed is probably close or better that the 30 kts of the MK46 being dropped on it. These aren't my beloved MK48 ADCAPS that you can be a little "loosey-goosey" with when dealing with a Russian SSN (not to mention wire guide to compensate for his evasion). The MK 46s need to be dropped right on top of this guy to have reasonable chance of hitting. The planes were dropping up to 10 NM away. Not a chance unless the SSN driver is totally out to lunch. And I have this guy locked up, there is no error zone around this contact. 2) So I then take the Orion and have him fly right over the top of the contact and just as he passes over I execute the attack sequence, the torp is dropped and I appear to nail the sub. (no contact on SONAR). Questions: 1) The Aurora failed to drop torps on 2 occasions - not sure why. I used the exact same steps as for the Orion and the Orion dropped weps when I designated. They are at the same alt. 2) When I put down a single, long course line with only one way-point at the end of it and then manually release passive sonobuoys from the Orion I have no problems laying down the pattern I want. Then I try the same thing with the Aurora, it will only place a sonobuoy at a way point even if I designate a drop manually withthe "[" key. I have duplicated this a number of times. If I want to place a string with the Aurora, I need to designate a course with a way point at each place I want a sonobuoy and then hit the "[" when the plane is near that way point. The Orion needs no set of way points along the line to manually place the sonobuoys. Why? So far I love H3/ANW. I can see why some might complain about it being a little more slow, but I am happy with that to have the features. I have yet to finish, but I have another Aurora and Orion on deck, and I know my route for the boomers and how I will sanitize it. Just have to execute the plan. 3) Is it possible to increase the size of the main program display window. I have a very large LED monitor and the default size is pretty small and difficult to see easily. I know I can make new zoomed maps inside of the program window, but can the main H3 program window be increased in size to use more of my desktop? If you are familiar with Windows Explorer, find your H3 directory and run the H3Launcher.exe program (I'm not on a computer with Harpoon right now so I may not have the name exactly right). There is a display tab where you can increase the size of the main game window for the next launch. Most experienced players always launch the game from this program.
