64-bit Vista

Featured Replies

Okay, I've just ordered a new computer, which is going to have the 64-bit version of Vista. I understand that this means I will need some help to run the scenario editor. What solutions are y'all using, and how much do they cost? Thanks for any input ... B)

Hi Warhorse,

My approach isn't the cheapest. I run VMWare Workstation, $200 (give or take $10). I run the SE on a Windows 2000 Pro virtual machine (which requires a valid Windows 2000 license) within VMWare workstation.

What you would need to take the VMWare approach:

1. VMWare Player (free), http://www.vmware.com/products/player/

2. A valid license for Windows 95 or newer 32-bit operating system on which to run the SE.

Then you have some choices...

a. Make your own shell VM with a service such as http://www.easyvmx.com/ then install your copy of Windows on the VM, then the SE.

b. Prove to me that you have a valid license and there is a good chance I'll agree to make a VM for you that will run on the player and comes with your Windows installed and ready for the HC installation.

In short, with the VMWare approach what you want can be accomplished with only a time expenditure as long as you have an available 32-bit Windows license. There are other solutions (Virtual PC, Linux/WINE,...).

I run several old OS's on my Vista 32 system using MS Virtual PC, which is available from MS gratis. It would provide a lower priced alternative to VMWare, which I also have.

Also note that although the official MS line is that MS VPC is designed for only Vista Business and Ultimate editions (32 and 64 bit), it works with the Home editions without problem. The unofficial line is something to the effect that this distinction keeps tech support requests down.

I've also found the MS version to be considerably easier to use, although it lacks some of the networking features available with VMWare.

I run the SE on a old 2000 Pro workstation of mine, and log in remotely from my vista64 laptop using VNC.

There is another alternative to VMWare and VirtualPC (which I have in an old, PowerPC version for Mac pre-X from before MS bought it ;)) :

Virtual Box, which can even support 3d acceleration of games.

http://www.virtualbox.org/

It's free, supports vista64, is developed by Sun (makers of Java if you don't know), and can use VMWare images if I remember correctly

I also have Virtual Box, but I've never been able to figure it out. Then again, I've never had much patience with detailed manuals. That's why I like reporting problems to the guys in this group like Tony, who actually understand the inner workings of things.

The thing I like about Virtual PC, besides the price, is that once you create the machine, everything is pretty much the same as installing an OS on a new PC in the old days. A little involved for anyone who started on WIN 95 or later, but pretty easy for an old DOS hand.

I run the game and any/all of its pieces under XP on VMWare.

I actually run this all on a Mac. I have it Bootcamped on a piece of the 2nd HD, but I just virtualize the Bootcamp partition with VMWare Fusion to run anything w/o 3D graphics demands, rather than reboot the whole thing into Windows.

You could do the same on about any 64-bit OS; i.e. virtualize XP or something that will run Harpoon.

I still have the Harpoon Classic CD with the original battlesets up through HDS III. I do wish I could find the books I used to have with all the scenario descriptions in them. :D
