It has been said in recent years that modern warfare clearly favors the attacker. Whether true or not, it is also said that this perception may encourage countries to favour pre-emption. It is certainly clear from recent conflicts that early battles usually determine the success of entire campaigns, and in fact, a highly successful pre-emptive strike may prevent (or at least delay) future war. Israel is no stranger to pre-emption. In the late 1970s, Iraq persuaded France to construct a research reactor near Baghdad. This light water nuclear reactor was named Osiraq by the French, an amalgam of the name of the Egyptian god of the dead, Osiris, with that of Iraq. This expan…

File Name: Dawn Patrol File Submitter: divefreak File Submitted: 3 Dec 2007 File Updated: 3 Dec 2007 File Category: GIUK 1.1 Background: The coast of Norway is made up of fjords and islands with high, rocky coasts. This is a perfect place for small surface craft to operate because the rock walls make them hard to spot on radar, and the short detection ranges make their smaller SSMs more useful than in open ocean. Additionally, there are so many fjords and other places to hide such that no navy can afford enough large craft to do the job. 1.2 Blue Orders: You are the commander of two squadrons of Norwegian warships. Coastal spotters have reported some la…

Cruise Control The 32nd new scenario of the year! Following the Israeli-Lebanese War of 2006, Lebanon was left weakened and unstable. Syria felt it was in its best interests to occupy the country. Beirut has come under attack and American forces are scrambling to rescue refugees. This scenario requires Harpoon Classic version 16b11 or later and also the HCDB_060614 for maximum efficiency. AAR: Operation Thistle - BAT90B2 [spoiler Alert] I examined the forces available under my command and surmised that the subsurface threat would be high due to the fairly high number of ASW-capable platforms. I hoped that my units would actually be able to detect the submarines in the first place. Since the orders allowed for it, I re-configured my fighter assets to full defensive mode with the AMRAAM in lieu of the less effective SkyFlash AAMs. My AEW assets were positioned north of the Faeroe Islands and well north of the Norwegian bases. They immediately detected EW emissions but could do nothing about them since I had no EW assets of my own. A flight of …

AAR: My Love is Vengeance [spoiler Alert] A Harpoon Classic scenario By Brad Leyte "Revenge is a dish best served cold." Many years had passed since the Cole was bombed, but there were still many men aboard her who remembered that fateful day. When the Captain announced the mission to his crew, everyone could feel the electricity in the air. Every man swore an oath to himself. Today would be the day that the Cole balanced the books. It was Retribution day. With only a 24hr. time frame for the operation, the aircraft from Diego Garcia were immediately sent aloft. I didn't have a target yet, but DG was a long ways off. Better to have them on hand and…

"AAR: Forced into the Corner Designer: Brad AAR by Ralf The scen created by Brad is a very tough one, no single second for recovering. There is constant naval and air combat action. I really enjoyed being pushed into the corner! Here are some hints which might be helpful for creating Corner V 2.0: 1) There are more than 1.000 aircraft involved - 600 + red and 400 + blue. This number is very difficult to handle both for the machine and the human controlling it. I would suggest cutting the numbers down to a maximum of 200 red and 100 blue ac. 2) I won by fulfilling the minimum victory condition kill of 100 aircraft. This was accomplished early in the game…

The Hunt for The Arctic Sea Hi - I'm a new member to the forum but always been a fan of the Harpoon Classic Edition. Continued under the Harpoon Commanders Edition banner by Matrix Games. Bearing in mind players love of new scenarios - particularly those based on actual events. I'm surprised no ones mooted the idea of creating a scenario based on the mysterious events surrounding the disappearence of the russian cargo ship Arctic Sea. Supposedly taken by Pirates and for which coastguards lost communications with, when the pirates switched off all comms & satellite tracking system - when it entered the busiest shipping lane in the world - namely the Engl…

AAR Patriot Lane Battleset EC2003 MEDC Database: Brads (does not run with the HC ODB!) Designer: Brad Leyte Tested by Ralf Koelbach "Patriot Lane" is the successor to "Forced into the Corner". The theater of operations is now more concentrated which improves both game performance and the possibilities of micro-managing the units available. It makes much fun to play this scen, but it is very hard - I lost. My problem was that I did not know why I lost because the orders required me to save my ships which I accomplished. Thus there seem to be some other victory conditions related to the number of bases to protect. Maybe they should be mentioned? …
