  1. Hello For passive detection, as one does know only the direction, how to fix the enable point? If it is fixed too quickly or too far, the torpedo can turn in round, too far from its target.

In the middle of the North Atlantic, a storm is blowing topside producing level 5 seas. A Russian Krivak steams at 15kts towards its rendezvous point. 10 miles ahead of her a Delta II nuclear submarine prowls, making sure the way is clear. At the same time, an Improved LA class submarine is heading towards them. Neither side is aware of the others approach. The engagement started with 30 miles separating the combatants. A combination of her poor passive range and the state of the sea meant the Krivak was essentially traveling blind. Besides, the Delta II was employed to do the detection work if any submarines were in their way. Like all good submariners are taught…

If one of a ground unit's inherent air defense assets fires on an enemy aircraft which is attacking a point target within the ground unit's combat box, is that air defense asset's GCS subtracted from the overall unit's GCS if that overall unit takes part in combat that Ground Cobat Turn? A Special Rule in SAW2, page 58 states; "If a plane overflies a combat box and there is a hostile unit equipped with shoulder-fired SAMs, the chance of a plane being attacked by a SAM (being spottedby a soldier with his launcher ready and being within the launchers envelope)is equal to the number of SAMs in the combat box on a D10." What about a plane flying overflying a c…

Howdy folks! jeffteacher23 here. I read RSR way back when and stumbled onto Harpoon v3 paper game about 1989 or so. I really like to run/referee a game between different players, As soon as v5 drops I plan on getting a copy and learning it. Then I'll need some players. I'm in Mainland China just north of HK, so it will probably be slow going until action is joined, then it will have to be on a weekend for the resolution via zoom and email for privileged communications. Any interest? I hope so!

  5. I'm currently reading The Iron Pirate by Douglas Reeman (excellent book so far) and have been inspired to use a big battleship. I've chosen the Iowa on page A-23 of H4.1. Some questions about her: 1) Weapons lists 2F/A(3)3 Mk7 406mm/50//2 Mk 13. Does this mean there are two lots of 3 x 406mm guns both forward and aft (front and back)? So thats 6 guns forward and 6 aft. I assume aft guns cannot fire forward and vice verca. Why is Mk7 listed and then a Mk13? 2) 2P&B/PQ/2S&SB/S&SQ®6 Mk28 127mm/38//4 Mk 25 What does the PQ and SQ stand for? I assume ® is rear? Can a port side gun fire to starboard? I dont mean that as a silly question, can the …

  6. Kevin - It is mentioned in SITREP60 that there may be a simplot2 file eventually for the Bugout scenario in the magazine. Does one already exist? I'm going to run this scenario soon and I can make my own easy enough but if the map image and txt file exist already for it (or for that matter, a full scenario file as well as the map files) Regards, Peter Robbins

  7. Started by Brains,

Time to brush off the H4.1 rules and scrub some of the rust off the old brain cells... Dawn Patrol is fondly remembered as a simple scenario to play and learn, but I decided this was a bit too dated. Recasting it in the light of the whole shift into the Pacific and an existing/ongoing conflict, I call it Island Clash. (Yeah yeah, imaginative name...) I plan on running the setup a couple of different ways to see both how the situation might have ended differently and to re-familiarize myself with the rules. Please do advise if I manage to screw something up. Island Clash Setting On Jan 30, 2013, escalating tensions over the islands the Japanese call the S…

  8. 2x Jaguar GR.1 with 8x Mk83 each are tasked with a strike on an observed ammunition dump located a couple hundred meters northwest of an intersection. Target area is defended by a battery of Bofor 40mm/L70 with a Fly Catcher FCR. The Jags started from their IP which is 10nm from the target, at 650kts and 300 feet or about 150m in the Low Altitude Ban. The aircraft speed and attack geometry had the Jags dropping their bombs prior to being engaged by the bofors battery. Lead completely missed and Dash2 got two hits for 80DP. An arbitrary DP total of 100 for the ammo dump left the attack causing .8 damage and a die roll of 4 provided for a critical hit status on the du…

Today's attack consisted on a strike against a suspected enemy brigade hq. 2x Jaguar GR.1, each loaded with 2x BL175 CBU and 2x Mk82 500 lb bombs. Target an enemy brigade headquarters, an assortment of bermed tentage and a handful of vehicles, all cammied up. I gave the HQ the equivilent of a reveted aircraft position...15DP. Defense were 2x Bofors 40mm/L70 (without RA) and a SA-7 Strela Team. Began with IP 8nm from suspected HQ. At range of 1.7nm HQ spotted. Ground forces also spot the attacking aircraft. Jags at 600kts (FMP), in Low Altitude Band, each drop two BL175's via horizontal laydown "small pattern". First time utilizing Cluster Bombs in …

  10. I am so thankful that the Harpoon V world continues to make improvements, corrections, and enhancements to the rules and data books. Is there any errata available that would show what, specifically, the Jan 8th, 2021 changes were for each of the Harpoon V publications? That would make it a lot easier to fix platform sheets that may have an error on them, identify sections of the rules that perhaps I've been playing incorrectly, and digest new information or rules. Thanks a bunch in advance.

here Mission The Joint Direct Attack Munition is a guidance tail kit that converts existing unguided free-fall bombs into accurate, adverse weather "smart" munitions. With the addition of a new tail section that contains an inertial navigational system and a global positioning system guidance control unit, JDAM improves the accuracy of unguided, general purpose bombs in any weather condition. JDAM is a joint U.S. Air Force and Department of Navy program. Features JDAM is a guided air-to-surface weapon that uses either the 2,000-pound BLU-109/MK 84, the 1,000-pound BLU-110/MK 83 or the 500-pound BLU-111/MK 82 warhead as the payload. Some initial thought: JDAM has twice the range 8.0nm than the GBU-12D (4.0nm) benefits the aircraft actually launching. Drawback, launching aircraft needs to be above VLow and Low altitude bands. (per 6.3.4.2.4) JDAMs launched from Medium altitude are resolved on the Medium Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Also must have advanced or computing bombsight. Better guidance I/GPS versus SALH for the Paveway. pH from AV-8B II+ (computing) at medium versus a "small" target = only 12%. From High or VHigh pH goes up to 23% due to computing at the Low Altitude Dive Bomb Table. Still seems weak - launching aircraft is vunerable further out at that altitude, will add comm…

Land based general attack table Has anyone put any time/effort into determining damage points for items not included on the General Attack Table on page 6-20? I'm looking to put together an extended target type list. Has anyone got any ideas for potential extra targets and their damage points, armour level, size and critical hit results? Throw your ideas out there for potential targets, their damage points, armour level, size, critical hit results and other info that might be important. I'll put together some of my own, and comment on others rationalising of targets as they go up.

If my earlier "SA-9" and "Back-Up Optical Sighting" posts were not clear, how about the questions/assumptions posed a different way. Is it safe to assume that in H4.1 all of the land-based SAM's found in Annex S without inherent radar systems are intended to be part of an overall air defense coordination network which will facilitate targeting information from radar systems – to C2 nodes - to those firing units? That a radar set or anti-air system with an inherent radar should be part of the scenario T/O. That those systems with an inherent radar capability (SA-6b with Straight Flush or SA-8 ) may have an optical sighting back-up only if duly noted in Annex…

  16. Sorry guys, but, as I go along trying to play a scenario, I get a lot of doubts. One is this: SITUATION: A frigate launched a helicopter that has no radar. An enemy ship (small) is about 70 nm. distance. From altitude of 900 m. (low) helicopter (in optimal weather conditions) has a visual LOS (med alt vs. small ship) of 79 nm. Question 1: being the enemy ship in the visual LOS of Helo, is the mutual visual detection automatic, or we have to roll a die? Question 2: assuming that the helicopter has spotted the ship, is able to communicate the exact location to its mother ship, so that she can, for example, launch Harpoons? Or we need to wait until the ship has its own r…

Wow, now that the LCS escorted convoy (another thread) has defeated the exocet strike, the convoy is now continuing on its way to its destination. The mine group's actions, suicide boats and the possibly most important Kilo SS will come into play. In order to get the SS into the fight, it needs to speed up. This began my concern for its safety in doing so; how will cruising effect the Kilo's detectability? I ran a quick exercise. Here is what I have determined after a quick look: The submerged Kilo max's out at 10kts submerged. The optional ALQ-22 sonar carried by the LCS is a dipping sonar requiring the platform to be hovering/dead in the water. Even if i…

Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) has been caught unprepared by a German-made K-130 FFL. RQ-8 Fire Scout had already detected the FFL but due to the make-up of Coalition Forces, the FFL was not initially classified as a hostile contact even though Country X utilizes K-130’s just as our coalition partners, the German Bundesmarine. The LCS has been equipped primarily for Counter Mine operations. In addition, per page 21 of Harpoon Naval Review 2003, the LCS is equipped with a total of five Mission Packages, specifically MP’s 1,2 3, 7, and 8. In detail, the Mission Packages entail: MP1 (1)1 Bofors Mk3 57mm/70//F GFCS MP2 (12)1 Mk48 VLS with 24 ESSM//1 Mk91 MP3 ®1 M…

  20. Started by Windscale,

Hello all from Windsor in the UK. I have a copy of Harpoon 4.1 and High Tide but never gotten round to playing it. The release of Harpoon V gives me the nudge to really give it a go. I've ordered the print books from wargame vault and downloaded the quickstart. Does anybody have any general advice for a sensible way to go about learning the game? In my experiments in the past, keeping track of unit locations and separation was a bit of a faff, do people recommend going straight to SimPlot 2 for that? TIA for your suggestions, Windscale.
