Pardon ignorance on this subject, but were tomahwak cruise missiles ever intended for the ASuW role? Recent history has played out its virtues in the land-attack mode. Is the TLAM phraseology indicative of its main, designed, purpose or just its more prevalent role? The question arises from my recent compilation of various ship data forms representative of the 1/2400 and 1/6000 models I currently have. For example, the Slava CG appears to be quite well protected with SAM's and other air defenses. The Bunker Hill (Tico VLS) has a boatload of tomahawks but only 8x Harpoons. Did a presumed 1990's conventional east-west naval engagement envision tamahwaks in an ASuW …

Peter Grining (PG) was able to provide me with H4.1 compliant "3D" stats for the above radar set, but did not have any for "SS". Anybody have the Surface Search stats for a EL/M-2228 "Surveillance, Track And guidance Radar" set? This set was apparently installed on the Indian Navy's Type-16A Brahmaputra FF replacing the RAWS.03 when they also swapped out the failed, locally developed "Trihul" SAM for the Israeli Barak system. Thanks

Game arrived yesterday after a pleasant e-Bay auction. This game is essentially a lite version of our beloved paper Harpoon game. The rules book is a whole 16 pages. You won't see a distance measurement in any unit other than hexes, no altitude bands, etc, just fighting! The included map covers roughly the GIUK gap. More details to come as I explore more.

Hi The Sub is not known if the contact is found in a direct path or convergence zone. But an TMA solution is possible only in direct path, less than 20 nm. So, after a few rounds of contact without TMA solution, the Sub will know that the contact is in CZ. Am I right?

Hi For some sonar, the classification is impossible (as against MF Quiet for example). So, to ensure the type of the target, we have to move to active sonar, which is dangerous. Might it not allow the classification with a passive penalty?

Hello For passive detection, as one does know only the direction, how to fix the enable point? If it is fixed too quickly or too far, the torpedo can turn in round, too far from its target.

From chat tonight. Discussing how use of Brahmos, or even SS-N-25 Switchblade equipped ships vs a SS-N-22 Sunburn equipped ship (see Shipwreck Indian Russian Engagement thread), it boils down to if the target gets detected by scouting helos, survival is based on its short ranged SAMs and countermeasures Sea King Mk.42 carries a Super Searcher. Detects a Medium target at 115nm. Radar horizon reduces that to 108nm if helo is at Medium Alt. Sovremennyy Mod carries F/A(1)2 Yozh Sa-N-7b w/ 24 Grizzly. Top Plate B 3D detects the large target at 160nm, reduced to 110nm due to RLOS. So each detects one another at roughly 109nm. Sa-N-7b has effective air r…

I'm looking toward employing my MEKO-140 and Halcon Corvetter/Large Parol Craft minis. Internet searches have not been very fruitful. I did find that the MEKO 140 is/was in use with the Argentinian Navy as the Espora Class an I have sufficient info on that. The Halcon is a different story. I have found that they were built by Spain for Mexico, and perhaps Argentina. What I have found on the Mexican Halcos is that the are armed with 40mm gun(s) and perhaps have the ability to launch a Bo-105 helo. Any additional information on the Halcon would be appreciated as they may make an appearance in a hypothetical scenario I'm brewing up. Thanks

Would use of an active jamming pod preclude the use of an anti-radiation missile from the same or co-located aircraft?

In preparing for a strike mission consisting of F/A-18D strikers, F/A-18C escorts, and EA-6B ECM escort, I have run up with a range issue in mission planning for the F/A-18D's - the first one's that I have worked up. It turns out that with 8x Mk-82, 2x AIM-9M, and 1x 330 USG Drop Tank I turn up 40nm short of the target. This includes a 10 minute combat margin and 10% reserve. Since the H4.1 data anex does not give too many loadout options I have searched and found "Hardpoints: 9: 2 wingtip, 4 underwing, and 3 fuselage, carrying up to 13,700 lb (6,215 kg) of missiles, rockets, bombs, fuel tanks, and pods" on wiki. When 500lb GP bombs are loaded are they done so…

High Tide Annex S Land Surface -to-Air Missiles provides Acquisition Radar and Acquisition Range vs Large (nm). After a limited check it does not appear that the radar data found in both High Tide and the Smarter Radar article meet the Percentage of large formula found in 4.2.2.1 Size of Contacts. That formula was multiple the Large 100%; Medium 62%; Small 40%; Very Small 18%; Stealthy 10%. Anyone aware of the formula, if there is one? Thanks

Ok gang, While discussing the effects of offensive electronic jamming, and possible air defenses last night in chat - up came the topic of IRST. After reading the very brief passage toward the end of "Detection" (Chapter 4 of H4.1) I was able to gleen that IRST's are relatively short ranged, and that there are multiple generations, 1-3, with increasing passive detection capabilities with each. Can anyone point me to where the actually game effects can be found, primarily at what range does the generational IRST detect other objects. Thanks again, Pete

Todays foul weather coupled with my 40 minute commute that took 2.5 hours gave me plenty of time to think about All Weather Attack Squadrons. What a capability to launch, seek out, and attack an enemy while they are beset by such aweful weather. Luckily I had my data annexes etc on the passenger seat so I was able to glance, while idle, at High Tide Annex B and its entry for the A-6E TRAM. Since I also mounted two 1/6000 A-6's on a single mount last night, I may need to give some more attention to a foul weather strike using the most glorious A-6 in my harpoon gaming. Since I'm still on this GCS kick as well, perhaps individual combat boxes (perscribed to be abou…

Can multiple Long Range Anti-Air Missile Engagements be resolved on the Large Air Attack Resolution Table? I calculated the missile index (1.0) and thereby determined the pK, in this case 40%. There were 12x Su-35's that had launched 24 AA-12 Adders. I calulated 12 aircraft * 2 attacks * .40 Does anyone else believe that this jives? I hope to have a quasi-official response sometime soon. Thanks

I mashed together organization from FM 100-3 Infantry Based OPFOR, and various GCS ratings from High Tide and HNR 2003 to create a modern Russian/FSU type of paratroop battalion. The battalion consists of a HQ element, 3x paratroop companies, a mortar battery, a SAM platoon, and ATGM platoon, and finally an AGL platoon. This heavy weight weighed in at 18.63954 as veteran, and 15.53295 as competent - one of the stronger forces I have seen in my brief GCS experience. Being anti-social as usual during lunch in my pov, I braved the oppressive heat and worked out a sample air drop. I loaded the battalion up on 8x An-12A, which has a cruise range of 3078nm. Comin…

The set is similar to that of the GCS Test Scenario from back in September. For those interested, load mapquest and search for New Bern, NC. This action begins southwest of New Bern, between Maysville and Pollocksville, all along Highway 58. A "veteran" USMC LAR Company reinforced with 2x LAV-AT (total GCS rating of 8.28), and with 1x M-198 artillery battery in D/S (6.48) moves, from around Maysville, into a combat box centered around Pollocksville, NC, which is currently occupied by an "competent" OPFOR Recce Company (1.2324 per HNR2003 P.37) with a 122mm artillery battalion (2.16) in direct support. While the OPFOR is in "Prepared Defenses Level1", the US play…

4.4.2.3 Towed Array: "All towed arrays are either classified as Low Speed or High Speed arrays. This is the speed it can be towed without reducing its detection range because of flow noise." Is low or high speed defined anywhere - I'm guestimating that it is the 0-50% and 51-100% of the platforms speed per their data sheet?

Page 2 of the H4.1 Data Annex is titled A Guide to Trilogy Ship Listings. "ESM/AIR: Surface ships use only the first field while subs use the second. No surface ships carry an ancoustic interecept receiver. The generations are listed as 1st/2nd/3rd Gen. For subs, the two ratings are separated by a slash." In working up an Improved Los Angeles Class SSN, its ESM/AIR rating is 3rd/4th Gen. How are the 3rd and 4th Gen ratings utilized? I'm assuming 3rd Gen ESM would be while on the surface - a la a surface ship? I'm drawing a blank on the "AIR" rating. Thanks
