A Harpoon Classic 2002 Gold scenario for the GUIK battleset.

This scenario is designed for play by the BLUE side

The Baltic Sea has long been a highly disputed area. With Soviet claims for access to the Atlantic independent of the ice region, this is unlikely to change in the future. Unfortunately, the Baltic is also a strategic waterway; providing a key maritime link between Russian oil fields, coal mines, and their foreign customers.

It has many choke points such as the Cadet channel, Copenhagen / the belt, and sound areas, for example. The former Soviet Baltic Fleet was caught in a big Mousetrap. Only their submarines could some times try to escape through the only deep waterway.

Therefore, it was one of the most important tasks for the German and Danish Navies to keep the Warsaw Pact Navies within this trap.

Here, in this scenario, some red diesel subs try to make it througt the belt waters out to the Kattegat.
NATO is going to stop them. The time of this scenario is somewhere in 1970-1980; so no modern ASW-weapons are available.

1.1 This and the companion scenario MATRIX SHIELD are training cruises for both Armageddon in HDS6 and Cyprus in HDS7. I highly recommend you play MATRIX SHIELD first, and from the RED side; only then should you move up the ladder of challenge! The RED side is the harder one in this scenario, by the way!

    1. BACKGROUND

1.1 What is a Brown Water Navy? Well, first of all, it's not a Blue Water Navy! Right now, the only real blue water navy is the US Navy. The Russians will have one again, soon. The British and the French have the makings for one. And the Indians want one. A blue water navy can use any of the oceans, any of the time, for as long as it wants; until, that is, it is challenged by another blue water navy. In short, they are not on a short leash. A Brown Water Navy is.

1.2 A Brown Water Navy must operate close to its ports. Its vessels are simply not equipped, and do not have the staying power, for long duration patrols far from home. However, this does not automatically mean they are nothing more than cutout log canoes! Their vessels can be tailor made to operate and fight in coastal waters -- the brown, shallow waters close to most things important to politicians and other would-be Rulers of the World. In fact, within limits, they can trade staying power for fire power!

  5. The discovery of oil deposits in northern Norway has led to border disputes between Russia and Norway. Recently Russia has seized territory in northern Norway including a Norwegian airbase. NATO is tasked with sending in SEALs to take out Russian SAM sites and to repel the invasion.

  6. Intel reports indicate Russia is using the current stalemate and resulting semi-truce to bring in reinforcements for the Northern Fleet from their far eastern military districts. National Command Authority has ordered Strike Fleet Atlantic to conduct offensive amphibious operation aimed at securing Iceland from Russian control in an attempt to forestall the coming Russian attack.

  7. Shinano Redux
EC2000 Battle for the Norwegian Sea

You are commander of the USS Archerfish, the fourth hull of the Seawolf class. (Which is modeled in this scenario by the SSN-23). The Russians have borrowed from an American idea and built a mobile offshore base. The structure is now enroute from the White Sea to the North Cape, where it is expected to take part in the ongoing wartime operations against NATO. Since the Russians already control the Norwegian Sea, the movement of this new asset into a threatening position is not acceptable. You must penetrate hostile waters, find and sink the Russian MOB. The enemy is expecting you, so you can be certain there will be plenty of ASW activity in this theater. (Released September 2002).

Once it became clear that the NSC would be backing UBAN, tensions in the North Atlantic rose sharply. The NSC began overtly shipping large quantities of arms and war materiel to UBAN nations, a considerable portion of which had to pass through the Greenland-Iceland-UK Gap. NATO threatened a blockade, and the NSC, of course, promised to retaliate if its merchant convoys were disturbed in any way. The stage was therefore set for a return to the traditional stomping grounds of the navies of the East and West blocs. (Released November 2000).

As part of our plan to undertake preemptive nuclear strikes on UBAN targets, we are preparing to suppress the NSC capacity to retaliate in kind. The NSC have concentrated their own nuclear arsenal in the area of the Kola Peninsula, largely as a cost-cutting measure. The EU has authorized a preemptive attack on these targets. The attack submarine Connecticut is now moving into position to deliver a SEAL team near the airfield at Arkhangel'sk, which is tasked with the destruction of mobile Topol-M launchers.

There are reports that the NSC is now stepping up its transport flights into Iran, and may even be transporting high-technology material via submarine as a way of avoiding the blockade. It has been decided that the best way to cut the illegal supply to UBAN is by attacking airbases and ports in NSC territory. The Nimitz has managed to punch through the Gap and proceed into a striking position near the Kola. NSC forces on Iceland are degraded but not neutralized, and the enemy position in Norway can only be described as a fortress.

The heavy bombardment endured by NATO's northern facilities and bases, particularly in southern Norway and the northern UK, pushed the alliance's line of defence further south with each wave of attacking NSC aircraft. The enemy was relentless in its efforts to push out from the Kola Peninsula, with the anticipated goal of freeing up the ocean waters north of Iceland for the eventual transit of the Northern Fleet. Most air attacks involved an initial long-range missile bombardment by Tu-16 Badger bombers armed with AS-4 "Kitchen" missiles, followed by strikes by Fencers and Floggers, some with chemical weapons. Eventually the northern Norwegian airfields and ports were abandoned, and with the exception of special forces and isolated pockets of resistance, NATO forces retreated south. Thus the Northern Fleet was permitted to escape the confining waters of the Barents Sea and move virtually unopposed into Iceland. Newly acquired facilities in northern Norway, Iceland and Jan Mayen have allowed forward basing of Soviet strike aircraft and interceptors to cover the deployment. NATO Task Force 177 was unlucky enough to be caught behind the rapidly-expanding umbrella of enemy forces. In the process of evacuating US Marines and their equipment from Orland, the amphibious ship Saipan suffered a major failure of its propulsion system. The vessel was by now fully loaded with combat-weary troops and their vehicles, and it was too late to transfer this cargo to another ship. Repair efforts led to a critical 7-hour delay of the convoy's escape, and now lead elements of the NSC invasion force were bearing down. NATO was extremely fortunate to have an "ace in the hole" - the newly built Mobile Offshore Base Mitchel, hastily deployed to the Gap.

SOSUS reports and satellite recon indicates that a large number of NSC submarines have put to sea. Some of these are believed to be enroute to UBAN states, intending to either directly intervene in operations in the Mediterranean or Middle East, or to deliver components for UBAN ballistic missiles. A team of NATO submarines have been dispatched to the Gap to interdict and destroy the approaching surge of NSC submarines.

Following a direct clash of arms between NATO and the NSC in the Gap, a state of war now exists between these two blocs. The situation has been greatly exacerbated by the NSC air strikes in Turkey, which serves to underscore the seriousness of the situation. The boundary at Breakwater Nine has now been disposed of, and now all NSC shipping in the North Atlantic is subject to attack. Norway has agreed to do its part in finding and destroying NSC naval elements. This effort comes at a price.

Incidents on the high seas following the imposition of the NATO blockade have underscored the need to strengthen the embargo against arms and strategic materiels shipments to UBAN member states. The NSC has vowed to retaliate for the acts of piracy perpetrated by NATO and its puppets.

The threat by NATO forces to impose an economic embargo on NSC arms shipments to UBAN nations is now a reality. A blockade of NSC shipping in the GIUK Gap has gone into effect. Now comes the hard part - enforcement.

EC2000 Battle for the Norwegian Sea

France never truly recovered from the Iberian conflict of August 1996. It never again fully trusted its European neighbors, although it participated alongside them in the conflicts that followed with Bangladesh, India and the New Soviet Confederation (NSC). With the US and NSC effectively removed from participation as a major players on the world stage, the EU was was the only remaining "superpower". Rivalries grew between its members in mid 2002, especially between France and the UK, and France officially withdrew from the EU later that year. On the surface, it appeared the disagreement was being
fueled by the commonly held belief that France was failing to abide by the spirit of the 1998 Code of Conduct on foreign arms sales, but some believed the dispute had much deeper roots. By February 2003, the UK and France were battling each other with economic sanctions and embargoes, and each stepped onto the slippery slope to war once more. (Released July 2000).

  22. Doolittle Two
EC2000 Battle for the Norwegian Sea

The Russians have launched a massive attack throughout the Norwegian Sea theater, seizing a beachhead near Orland about halfway down the coast of Norway. The Norwegians are still in the fight, but it is doubtful for how long. The enemy has followed up their first wave of attacks with the deployment of not one, but two, very large carrier battle groups. Intel indicates that both Kuznetsov and Varyag have put to sea, together with a large number of escorts, including nuclear powered battlecruisers and ASW carriers. At least one of these CVBGs is expected to bolster the beachhead in Norway, while the other may threaten Iceland or even the North Atlantic. Arrayed against the gathering Russian storm cloud, the US Navy has advanced a two pronged defence. The Mobile Offshore Base Mitchel has forward deployed to a large fjord in eastern Greenland, together with a modified Air Expeditionary Wing. The Wing will have its hands full in defending against the two Russian CVBGs and in supporting our counter-attack. And, in the south, we are pushing ahead with a plan to retake Norway. A PHIBGRU has been rapidly assembled and is now heading north for the Gap. It is critical that the group successfully reach its objective. (Released September 2002).

EC2000 Battle for the Norwegian Sea

Sweden is taking brave steps to hold back the Russian offensive in the Baltic Sea. The odds are stacked against their success. The USAF has sent forces into the theater to help turn the tide, and the British have deployed the first of a new class of aircraft carriers formerly known as the CVF (modeled by the Saratoga). With an air wing of F/A-18E Hornets (the British JSF was cancelled in this timeline), including several new EA-18G Growler (modeled by the EA-7L), the British hope to act quickly to save the Swedes and open the door for the follow-up American flyers. Time is not on your side, as intel reports that a Russian PHIBGRU has been assembled and is already enroute. (Released September 2002).

  24. The European Federation Moves into the North Sea
EC2000 Battle for the Norwegian Sea

The joining of Continental Europe with Russia has created an economic power that continues to expand rapidly. It has created the largest standing army in the world; and with the old Soviet Navy rebuilt and combined with the rest of Europe's navies, the Federation now boasts one of the strongest naval forces, second only to an American Navy that has been on a recent down-sizing trend. The Russian Bear arises once again in its new-found union with the E.F. However, the latest setback is the joining of France with French naval assets to the E.F. The addition of French carriers and air power now increases the Federation's naval power projection. The European Federation has decided it can no longer tolerate American and British warships operating in the waters north of Iceland. The real reason is economic, namely the oil fields in the North Sea. Last month we saw the E.F. sieze the Baltic Sea, claiming it a protected waterway. The E.F is now making the move on the North Sea.

  25. The Federation Takes the Baltic
EC2000 Battle for the Norwegian Sea

With the door closing quickly, Allied Forces are trying to extract naval assets from the Baltic. Allied naval exercises were a disaster, with the Federation chosing the perfect opportunity to disrupt and fragment Anglo-American naval forces into a retreat with a coordinated attack on their war games in conjunction with an attack on their vital bases - taking out Cherbourg and circling the wagons around remaining French naval units. The Anglo-American force uses a new Mitchel-class carrier with the Foch, a Clemenceau-class carrier; these form an operational base for the Allied effort to keep the door open and bring the Jeanne D' Arc and the Invincible south to the protected waters around Denmark. Supported by two American carrier groups, the Allies must bring home the Jeanne D' Arc and take out St Petersburg to insure a victory. Likewise, the Federation will target Copenhagen, the Mitchel carrier, and try to prevent the Jeanne D'Arc from arriving on-station.
