Scimitar (Part 3 of 5)

 

A Harpoon Commander's Edition (HCE) scenario for the Middle East Battleset.

 

This scenario is designed for play by the BLUE side.

 

In this third instalment in a five part series, the crisis in the Middle East has deepened and expanded into a regional war in which old superpowers threaten to become involved. The Israelis have struck the Iranian nuclear facility at Esfahan, and have largely decimated the Syrian air force. But the Syrian army has nevertheless managed to seize positions in the Golan Heights, and ominously, appear to be enjoying Russian military support. So called Russian 'peacekeepers' are arriving in force in Syria, and it appears, in Iran as well.

Early returns say these are good scenarios and given that the battlesets are as good as empty; yes, I imagine they'll end up in the game. It may not be the next patch though, could be second one down the line, we'll see.

Well.. this escalated pretty quickly.

 

After a pretty intense air to air fight, my Israeli forces quickly gained the upper hand, despite having to deal with successive waves of Russian built fighters carrying longer ranged AAM's.

 

After reducing Damascus down to about 25% I then had a couple of planes shot out of the sky by the hostile Soviet Kirov lurking too close for comfort.

 

After a couple of SEAD strikes, I was able to co-ordinate an attack with a 3rd SEAD attack, with the heavy punch provided by the Gabriels and Harpoons of my single sub and the small Israel surface force. 4 Harpoons hit the Russian Battlecruiser and sent her to the bottom.

 

I then went to work on the 'true' mission, that being CAS against the northern ground forces. I lost more planes than I should have due to planes going to the wrong targets.

 

Tip: Do not simply choose the 'attack' option when launching. You need to 'patrol' them and then guide them manually with waypoints, because against scattered ground forces the planes can go anywhere.

 

With about half the enemy force gone, I received a note that a car bomb had gone off in Nevatim. After we re-armed, I blew the enemy tanks, bmps and trucks with JDAM.

 

A raid warning caused by a SCUD missile coming in from the south was quickly followed by Nuclear Release, and as per orders I launched the Jericho missiles at mytargets. Damascus, already heavily damaged, was obliterated, and Tehran was 'wiped off the map' by a nuclear firestorm.

Trying to run these new scenarios and I cannot. Seems my install of HCE, when I select the Middle East battle set, wants a scenario file that ends in .scz. I notice there are 2 Middle East battle sets available and I have tried to use either one, including hand delete of the files from one when I install the other, yet stil no go. What the heck am I missing? Thanx

So far as I know .scz scenarios are 'user' scenarios (installed by using hdsu.res and hdsu.rsr files into the main HCE directory)

The middle east scenarios using .scv scenarios is a built in battleset although not in older versions of the game. My guess is that you have installed a 'user' middle east battleset. I'd move your hdsu.res and hdsu.rsr files into a 'holding' folder and try again. You should have (depending upon game version) "The Middle East IOPG" as the last (or second last if a user battleset is present) in the initial battleset selection window. If you get into the correct battleset then the .scv scenario should be selectable.

If you have a quite old game version (which version do you have?) you might not have the correct built in battleset and need to get the latest update from the Matrix games web site.

Hope this helps but undoubtedly some better information will come if you haven't solved the issue by later today.

Thanks, done and done. probably my own fault somehow. In December 2009 I had a complete hard drive meltdown and had to download and reinstall all on a new hard drive. Somehow in that process when I downloaded Harpoon, which I have owned since the 360 Pacific days, I got the -024 file instead of latest & greatest. Knowing that I just downloaded the file I did not think that could be the problem...live and learn.
