February 19, 201016 yr I saw some vague news reports today of a new indiguous Iranian DDG? Anyone more in tune with this? Its the Mowj (also given as Moudge or Mowdge) class vessel Jamaran. I hesitate to call it a destroyer, cuz its only 1,400 tons and not very heavily armed. More akin to a corvette or a light frigate, perhaps. Main armament is a reverse engineered 76mm Compact, 4x C-802 anti-ship missiles and, possibly, a quad Yazahra (Chinese HQ-7) SAM launcher. Some light AA guns aft too, maybe 37mm. Sensors are pretty sparse, but are believed to include an Italian RTN-10X and a couple or three other radars.
February 19, 201016 yr Author There was a pic of a Mullah touring it and the distance from deck to bridge did not look to warrant such a designation, but thought it may just have been a stinky file photo.
February 20, 201016 yr In the magazine "Marines & Forces Navales", october-november 2009, in an article about the Iranian Navy, a very short description of Jamaran says is a reversed engineering Vosper/Saam FF, 1420 tons, 76mm Oto-Melara alike, 4x20mm guns, 4xC-802 antiship missiles, diesel propulsion, 28-30 knots (the original Vosper/Saam was gas turbine equipped, with 40 knots top speed), and no traces of the second unit in the class.
February 20, 201016 yr Author Vosper/Saam FF, weren't they outclassed in detail back in the late 80's engagements during the so-called Tanker War with the USN?
February 21, 201016 yr Vosper/Saam FF, weren't they outclassed in detail back in the late 80's engagements during the so-called Tanker War with the USN? Clearly yes, but in a spanish newspaper I've read about it "anti-missile destroyers",
March 1, 201016 yr Vosper/Saam FF, weren't they outclassed in detail back in the late 80's engagements during the so-called Tanker War with the USN? Outclassed is a small understatement. Sahand was easily sunk during Praying Mantis op (two Harpoons, one Skipper II and few Rockeye's), sister ship Sabalan was crippled during the same clash. Great read about it in "Inside the Danger Zone: The US Military in the Persian Gulf 1987-1988" by Harold Lee Wise. So if this new one is classed as DDG, then Poland's long overdue corvette Gawron ("Rook") should be designated as BB (well maybe BBG).
