Two questions:

 

1. In HUCE, I apparently am not using aircraft in an ASW search correctly. For instance, I'll detect a torpedo. From there I'll estimate the box and send out ASW aircraft by using Launch/Patrol. The aircraft whips on out there, goes into Loiter, drops one (1) sonobouy and... Nothing. No other bouys are dropped, no motion, nada. Naturally, this results in no detections -- I have had one aircraft detection -- a MAD detect.

 

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

 

2. Is HUCE the version I should be concentrating on? Are the other versions more stable or effective?

Unless you are attacking a target the SW patrol will just not search for a contact unless it is part of your task force.

I launch an ASW patrol and when it gets to it's patrol location I set it's course manually. Depending on if I want it to go in front of my task group or parallel to it's course. I use a plane that has MAD to search for subs and use other planes that just have sonobuoys to finish off a sub.

To manually drop a buoy select the ASW group in the unit screen and select the . (period) and it will drop a buoy.
Keyboard Commands can be found in Section 6.0 page 54 of the HUCE manuals located in the Matrix Games/HUCE/Manuals directory on your computer.

1) As Eric wrote, in the stock game you will want to plot the course for the search pattern manually and then drop buoys manually as well. There is an add-in from donaldseadog that you can use once you feel comfortable stepping outside the stock game. http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/files/file/809-toolbox/

 

2) HUCE is the only version of computer Harpoon still being maintained and improved so I would say it is the right one to concentrate on. Are you having stability issues? Again like Eric wrote, make sure you are at least at 2009.097 and when you want to go beyond, start using the betas. They are usually as stable or more stable than 2009.097 and introduce a 32-bit scenario editor that will run on 64-bit versions of Windows without using a virtual machine (Wscenedt32.exe). http://harpgamer.com/harpforum/index.php?/topic/2049-current-files/

With the P-3s and often with the S-3s the aircraft would lay a pattern to cover an area and we would agree on kingpin, road, and spacing so we could both see the area being covered.

 

Any chance of something similar here. It's just not realistic that a P-3 would check on-station and drop a single buoy, or that I would call his drops.
