Setting up MP in a LAN environment

Featured Replies

Hello,

I´m trying to set up my LAN-connected PCs for a MP session. Haven´t done it for along time, so probably I´ve forgotten something.

On the client PC I always get the message "Waiting for server to respond".

The settings so far:

- GE 3.8.0 release version on both PCs - should work - or not?

- PCs connected via LAN; no problem with the network - IPs set manually do work in all other cases.

Maybe I´ve chosen the wrong port? Tested it with 14342 ODB db on both machines.

My "network boot sequence":

1. Started the server on one PC

2. Started the client on this PC

3. Started the client on the client PC

Any clues?

tia

Well, your first mistake was not using the PlayersDB... Just kidding. ;)

Just a minor thing comes to mind.

After you change the port / IP settings on either machine, do you remember to hit "OK" and close the launcher (and save the new settings) before re-opening the launcher and trying to connect?

Found it - wrong IP-adress on one machine! Tested it and now it works.

Will have a great Thursday I guess. :D

thx

If you have a firewall, either software on your comps or hardware ( a router for example), you have to create a virtual server to allow the server to use the port 14342 to send data through it to clients.

btw, you have to use the local IP of your comp, not the one provided by your ISP.

cheers,

Jan

Yes, firewall is on on both PCs. Port is set to 14342 and it works just fine.

14342 is only for ODB db? Or for all db if I´m in a LAN (not Internet) environment?

There is no requirement to use a particular port with a particular DB. You could run ODB on port 32768 if you wanted to, the key is as you've found, connecting to the correct DB on the correct port. The port by the way is defined at the server machine in the launcher or harpoon3.ini. The restriction is if you run multiple ANW servers on one machine, each ANW server must use a different port.
