July 21, 201213 yr Author The Canadian submarine HMCS Victoria sank the decommissioned American Mars class combat stores ship USNS Concord with a Mk 48 torpedo during a SINKEX at RIMPAC 2012, at the Barking Sands range, off Hawaii, on July 17. July 23, 201213 yr Wow, I guess pigs really can fly - fancy that. Heck, it only took them, what, 12-years to conduct the first test-fining. It just goes to prove that a broken clock really can be right once a day! Keep this good work up and we'll see about nominating a new theme song for the RCN Sub Force. All joking aside, I'm glad you guy's sub program is making some turns in the right direction. Hopefully, we will soon see some more successful M-48 tests. Congrats.

Mmmmm, I don't pretend an in-deep analysis, but as I've fresh the Courageous scenario: - CV HMS Courageous, a fleet carrier converted from a rare and almost experimental "light" battlecruiser, 22500 tons standard displacement, full manned and I suppose in action stations, sunked in 15 min after be hit by two German G7 torpedoes (low estimate 2x280 Kg hexanite warhead). - AFS UNSN Concord, a fleet auxiliary, 9200 tons light (something less than standard displacement) unmanned and perhaps in semi-derelict condiction, sunked in 17 min after be hit by one Mk48 torpedo (292.5 Kg PBXN-103 warhead, more or less hexanite equivalent).

July 23, 201213 yr From the video, the Concord took the shot in the bow, as the fish was likely set for impact. Normally, against more heavily armed target the Mk-48 is capable of blowing the water out from underneath the target. On a Frigate, DD or Cruiser this destabilization would break the ship's back. The fish has a magnetic proximity sensor that would detect when it is under the keel. I remember seeing training reels in my active duty days of tests against some of the older tin-cans. Pretty impressive stuff.
