January 28, 201115 yr Friends, I'd be grateful for a bit of advice. Here's my situation... I've long enjoyed HCE, but Windows 7 (64-bit) does not like the scenario editor! I can play the game, but I can't open the editor. I don't know when, if ever, a version of the scenario editor will be available that is 32-bit (I guess the problem is that the 64-bit windows doesn't like the 16-bit scenario editor) and, along with playing Harpoon, I'd love to keep writing Harpoon scenarios. I'm willing to give Harpoon 3 another try. I got an early version that crashed a LOT and finally gave up in disgust, but that was many years ago. In fact, H3 might be a better program for me to write scenarios on anyway, since a lot of the ones I find interesting are small battles between a couple of small or medium forces, and H3 seems to handle those up-close-and-personal scenarios very well. So here is the big question... Does the scenario editor for Harpoon 3/ANW that comes with the Ultimate Edition work under Windows 7 (64-bit)? If the H3 scenario editor and 64-bit Windows 7 don't get along, then I'm out luck (or I have to borrow my daughter's 32-bit laptop any time I want to write scenarios...this is not really a viable option...). If they do get along, I may just have to treat myself to Ultimate Edition and try my hand at a few H3 scenarios. Are there any other issues related to Windows 7 that I should be aware of before I buy the Ultimate Edition? Thanks! Mark
January 28, 201115 yr The ANW scenario editor is fine on 64-bit operating systems. There have been some display color issues with ANW but most everyone has been able to work around them and most if not all of them are being dealt with in a patch. As for HC I'll mention one last time (to you) the potential to run the SE that opens up if you do an in place upgrade to the Professional version of Windows 7 so that you can run the XP mode and consequently the SE.
January 28, 201115 yr Mark, not to discourage you from writing any H3ANW scenarios, because the players would be very lucky to have you, but ... I am now running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and using the built in XP Mode to run the Scenario Editor. And it is EASY! Running the SE is now a breeze.
January 28, 201115 yr Author Tony, Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, I really wasn't planning on upgrading Windows 7 to the Professional edition. If I was, then getting the HCE editor to work again would be the icing on the cake, but I can't really justify doing it simply to get that one program to work, and that's all it would be for in my case. But if H3 and the editor will work under Windows 7/64-bit, then maybe it's the universe telling me it's time to finally give H3 a try... Mark
February 1, 201115 yr Hi Mark, Tony, Thanks for the quick reply. Mark I´ve been writing scenarios for both HC and H3 / ANW for literally decades now and if you try H3 ANW and need any assistance ....just ask. Regarding the database, I strongly recommend using Darren Buckley´s HUD 3 which has become ANW´s official database. Yes, maybe ANW is your "Weapon of choice". It´s perfect for micromanaging and thus for small scenarios like your "Jap Fish". But mind one thing: the H3 / ANW community is sometimes rather difficult and cannot be compared with this really nice HC community, concentrated on this lovely spot HG. You´ll detect it when you join the Matrix forum where the main ANW discussions take place. The guy who´ll always help you out there is Darren Buckley aka Bucks. Regards, Ralf
