What does the supply ships(like AOEs and AORs) and Landing Ships do in HCE??

Is it possible to have a Landing operation in HCE???

They are representative of the real thing, but they do not perform refueling or resupply.

Nor is it possible to actually perform an amphibious landing in the sense of putting troops ashore.

Since Brad covered the straight factual reply I'll take the philosophical reply. AOEs and AORs slow down your carrier groups, making them much more vulnerable. They also raise questions of escort when they 'need' to detach and go refill themselves.

Similarly landing ships make good targets <_ and force the player to try get uncomfortably close an often hostile shoreline.>

The platforms, while not directly useful in the game, do complicate your job as a commander, especially when you place the value on them that the real militaries would.

It's an old joke in the USN that LST actually stands for Large Slow Target. :P

Unarmed ship types could be part of the victory conditions: lose this, you lose.

Landings can be simulated in the VC as well: these ships need to spend a certain amount of time at this (coastal) location.
