  1. Nice comparison! ASW Stingray is actually 4.3 nm at 45 knots. Don't forget to look at Maximum Depth and Remarks for torpedoes. Stingray max depth is Deep III, Mk46 series is Int V. Stingray has DE warhead, Mk56 Mod 5A(S) is Shallow Water capable. Cornwall has Sonar 2031 towed array, OHP has SQR-18 or SQR-19 towed array also. If a scenario takes place in shallow water, sonar frequencies are also important. Lower frequency sets are 1/2ed in shallow water, have no CZ, etc. Air Defence If its a mid-Atlantic scenario against Soviet bombers, OHP has a longer ranged AS radar and can contribute to shooting down a High altitude stream of AS-4 or AS-6 missiles. Cornwall has improved sea defence against seas skimming missiles - but cannot contribute to area air defence.
  2. My thought is that you do not perform both simultaneously, and therefore perform rolls separately. Think about the nature of active sonar, for example. Very noisy, so trying to listen for a contact passively at the same time would be a difficult exercise. The exception would be certain systems that combine active arrays and passive receivers, as with some towed arrays, which I think the rules account for. As per 4.4.1 Sonar Types (page 4-7 in H4.1): "Many have both active and passive settings, but they can only perform on type of detection at a time. A sonar's mode can be changed each Engagement Turn (30 seconds)."
  3. I think one of the two does this (which includes some GDW game numbers): http://farfuture.net/
  4. The following was posted by 'someone' on 'another' Harpoon forum (not sure on either). BOL: Well bearing only.... Poor: (rough idea on range and speed) Very close (<1 nm) or Medium (1-9.9 nm) or Far Away (>10 nm) - makes sense, how much noise are they putting in the water? Target Speed < 15 kts (Y or N) - is the bearing rate changing a lot? SLow or Fast "Conn, sonar we have a Slow, Medium range contact at 45 degrees" Fair: Target is < 2nm or CZ (I'm not too sure on these two) Opening or Closing? Rough course: N, NW, S, etc (this is basically answers opening or closing) If ship/sub class is known (see sonar classification) target speed say - Slow (1-10 kts), Medium (11-20 kts), Fast (20+ kts) "Conn, sonar we have a Slow, Medium range contact at 45 degrees, course is opening to the North. Sounds like a Victor III" Good: Contact range, course and speed "Conn, sonar. The Victor III is at 12000 yards, bearing 45. Sounds like 120 degrees at 10 knots" I've notice in Harpoon PBEM that players do not keep a plot due to time, lack of preparation or laziness. If they are given just bearings and a fire control solution they will stuff up the intercept up. Giving them some kind of information above takes them out of the sonar shack and back into the command chair.
  5. As its 1980, the Soviet player has 2 Tu-128, 3 Su-15 and 4 MiG-25 regiments (pg 106 High Tide). Paul as per pages 107-108 how many regiments (and which type) are on Sector Patrol, Ground Alert and AEW Escort? Anyone for the USN player?
  6. Who wants to play the US and who wants the Soviets?
  7. Yes. Does everyone have High Tide?
  8. Flu, family commitments and job training. More in the next couple of days.
  9. I'm back on deck Sunday. The plan would be to post the results here. Its a fairly preprogrammed scenario, so should be okay for PBEM play.
  10. 1980 or 1988?
  11. Anyone interested in trying some of the GCS scenarios from the Falklands War?
  12. Anyone interested in playing the Kola strike scenario from High Tide?

I'd have to check the Annexes, but an A-7E at full military power is faster than the Yak-38. If the A-7Es, drop their bombs and engage the Yak-38, the Soviet side has 'won' as the airstrike is effectively aborted.
  14. Is there any interest in adding a Harpoon fiction section to the forums? Either expanded play examples or straight out fiction?

Threw 8 Soviet MiG-23M at 8 French Mirage F1C using the new air combat rules. Timeframe is 1976. At this time the MiG-23M have 2 R-23R and 4 R-60 and internal 23mm. Unfortunately the MiG-23M were suffering from quality control issues with the mid-body swing wing mechanisms (fixed from 1977). This limited Man Rating to 2.5 (vs Mirage F1C 4.0). Due to the limited agility the Soviet pilots had not had a chance to practice dogfight tactics - I rated the pilots as 50% recruit and 50% novices as a result. The Mirage F1C has 2 R530 msls (The Magic 1 did not enter service till 1978 and Super 530F after this) and internal 30mm cannon. The aircraft are head to head to, Low altitude (they both have long range SAMs to worry about - first error on my part) maximum detection range (21 nm Cyrano IV radar vs MiG-23M or Small tgt). The Detection phase sees the French detect the Soviets at 21 nm, the Soviets see the French (no they don't as Safir-23D vs Small is only 14 nm - second error). R-23R range is 12.8 nm, R530 is 10.2 nm (these should have been halved, see above), with everone heading in 650 kts (2.7 nm/move phase = 5.4 nm closure rate). First Turn First Move: 21 nm Detect Second Move: 15.6 nm Second Fire phase: Aircraft can fire in this phase (2.2.4). Although msl ranges are 12.8 and 10.2, the aircraft closure rate is 5.4 nm/phase (although if aircraft turn this throws things out). As I said this should have been French fire only. Everyone fires two msls at one tgt (One MiG-23M has two R-23R failures, one Mirage F1C remains free from fire) One of the things that still gets me is that aircraft fire missiles, but they don't move till the next phase. Mirage F1C moves 2.7 nm, the R530 at 6.4 nm/phase is only 3.7 nm ahead of the firing aircraft. Second Turn First Move: 10.2 nm between aircraft, missiles are heading in Detect: Everyones RWR is going off. Second Move: 4.8 nm. Both the R-23R and R530 arrive, everyone choses to maneuvre, which means they can no longer provide SARH guidance. Except one Mirage F1C is still providing SARH guidance. One MiG-23M is blotted out. No-one has any ECM fitted (no jammers or decoys). Third Turn Everyone is at dogfight range and a massive furball ensures. Basically during the next two turns all the MiG-23M are shot down. The fact the French pilots are better proficiency (by two to three levels), the Mirage F1C are much more agile (Man Rating: 4.0 vs Man Rating: 2.5), even though they are not fitted with short range AAM - the French splash all the MiG-23M using 30mm cannon. Two rules mistakes I made: 1) AAM range is halved at low altitude. 2) Range was 21 nm during first turns detection phase. French detect the Soviets, the Soviets cannot detect the French. The French should have got a free shot at the Soviets before they could have replied. A couple of scenario balance - should have removed the restrictions from the Soviets, a couple of years later the Soviets would be able to use full agility, pilot restrictions would have been lifted, R-60M would be available. However the French would also have ended up with Magic 1 and Super 530F. I was going to follow up with MIG-23M vs F-104G (RO radar, 4 AIM-9D, 20mm), and F-4E(4 AIM-7E, 4 AIM-9J, 20mm), but little point - the scenario remains unbalanced. I need to re-read all the air combat and missile movement rules (3.4.4)....
  16. A-6A bombing system was pretty early technology. A-6E is Bombsight: Computing with TRAM laser designator/rangefinder and FLIR from around 1979. The radar would not be able to detect the infantry.

What about India's Bison (son of Bis - no I'm not making that up!): http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Aircraft/Specs/index.html Decoys scabbed on sides (call them 3rd Gen D) CL EL-8222 jammer pod (3rd gen Jammer) UW1 HP with R-77 UW2 HP with R-73 Aimed by HMS, Kopyo radar.
  18. Also depends on which Data Annex you are using and for which year the scenario takes place for which weapons are available. You mentioned Mk 82 series which were only used on German and Italian Tornadoes. For example: UK Tornado GR.1. In Service: June 1982 Initial weapons: AIM-9L, Sky Shadow ECM pod, BOZ-107 decoy pod, Mk 13/18 1000 lb bomb, BL.755 cluster bomb Others: WE177B/C nuclear bomb (later in 1982, retired Mar 98); JP.233 (Apr 85, retired 98); ALARM (Jan 93); TIALD, Paveway II (UK) (1993); GP.1 recon pod (late 94); GBU-24 Paveway III (BLU-109, Sep 95) UK Tornado GR.1B. In Service: 1994-00 As GR.1 plus Sea Eagle antishipping missiles (retired 1998) UK Tornado GR.4 Waaaay too many weapons and dates to list, but plenty of precision guided weapons such as Brimstone, Storm Shadow cruise missiles.

Kinda 6.7.1, but its not real clear. 6.2.4 (yeah I know!), page 6-4, paragraph before Example 1. SITREP 30 clarifies this with 'Q&A: EW Rules Clarification in H4'.

I'd have to check the H4.1 rules, but the F-15C jammer is a radar jammer. Against the IRH Magic 2, it can only use decoys (flares). If it was a say a Super 530D (SARH), the F-15 could use the radar jammer and decoys (chaff). And most Mirage 2000 are fitted with a radar jammer. Some of the entries have fitted with IR jammer (2nd Gen vs IRH), this would be the ALQ-144 and the like.

Depends on the country and variant of Mirage 2000, but they have always been fitted with decoys.
  22. I've recently purchased Boots and Saddles as this game in the Assault series add helicopters. I'm about to play the beginners scenario (one M1 tank company vs two T-64 companies). I plan on updating counter stats for correcting the 1985 ones in the game and trying out current and near future units in the game. The problem I have is Assault had the designer notes on the armour scale. Could someone post this please?
  23. Maybe the PayPal link at the bottom of this page? http://firefight-games.com/Gamespage.htm
  24. HELRAS and FLASH operate at very deep depths - close to the deep sound channel. This increases the ranges and especially the CZ capability.
  25. Note the Litening AT targeting pod on the port fuselage HP.....
