Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon 3.

  1. Here is a near future scenario I'd like feedback on. Sometime in the next five years, the Cuban leader, another Castro is assassinated. His successor is not up to handling the crisis and Cuba erupts into civil war, the factions being those who support the old regime and those who want to see a complete change of government, restored relations with the U.S., etc. Within six months, the U.S. decides to openly support the rebels. It sends supplies, but not actual troops. It does, however, cheerfully sink most of the Cuban navy. Just as a precaution. Allies of the Cuban regime attempt to support it, but the U.S. creates a blockade. Not as extreme, perhaps, as the on…

AAR: Alone in the Snow [spoiler Alert] A Harpoon3 scenario for the PlayersDB By Herman Hum Rodrigo Flores was just finishing up a hard week's work when we linked up and decided on a game of ANW. We decided to try one of the latest scenario releases for the PlayersDB, "Alone in the Snow". The scenario depicts a Russian attack on "neutral" Sweden. Rodrigo played the Russians while I played the Swedes. As the designer of this scenario, I had a slight advantage since I had an idea of the overall Order of Battle. Luckily, Rod chose the side that I would have deemed more powerful and thus evened out the match. I had three operational airbases an…

Yesterday, after participating in part of a game of Shadow The Boomer, I watched Freek and Herman as they played Dawn Patrol, remade with the community's favourite database, the Players DB. I've never spectated a game before and it was certainly interesting. I've learnt not to trust my radar 100%. Herman played Norway, Freek the Russians. There was the initial poking around in the dark, until Freek got up to and sunk a Norwegian PTM. Herman was close to a Russian corvette and launched- too close. The corvette was closer than minimum range, so the missile sailed over it- and headed for another Norwegian. That and three "Sirens", sunk it. This incident w…

  4. Okay, here is my newest attempt at an H3 scenario. Basically, Chile is ticked off at people using their fisheries and decides to shoot up some fishing boats; Japan sends warships to protect their trawlers, and it's not long before things head south. You can only play the Japanese side. Please let me know what you think. Thanks. Mark chil20a1.zip

Okay, I was bored and I put together some tables for randomly generating scenario ideas. I figured I would share them with folks. Use as many as you need to come up with a good story. Enjoy! I hope they inspire many fun scenarios! First, we need to know when the story takes place: Year of Crisis 1-2: Cold War: 1970 + 1d20 3-4: Turn of the Century: 1990 + 1d20 5-6: Present and Near Future: 2010 + 1d20 (This gives us a range from 1971 to 2030, which is actually beyond the official range of the HUD-4, but allows for more historical and speculative scenarios. There are enough older platforms in the HUD-4 that one can handle a lot of the 1970s p…

The 129th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! CHOKE POINT - PIG BOATS 1 At first, the world considered the declaration of war nothing more than a formality -- a joke. How could Russia successfully stage a war against Spain? Sure, the Spanish had vetoed the EC trade agreement with their large eastern neighbour, but they had their reasons. The problems could be evaluated and resolved. The declaration of war, though unnecessary, was somewhat understandable. In any case, the two nations were so far removed that nothing would come of the "war" -- right? The EC was completely shocked by the blitz the Russians conducted against the Spanish fleet. In on…

The 11th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Showdown These scenarios are based upon events described in the book, "Show of Force", by Charles D. Taylor, 1980, Charter Books. The United States has established a Trident re-supply base in the Indian Ocean. The Soviets claim that such a base is meant to de-stabilize the region and prevent the self-determination of African nations and others within the area due to intimidation. Both nations have deployed extensive fleets to the Indian Ocean in a "Show of Force". Without guidance from NCA, both theatre commanders are operating under their final orders received. What began as a show of force has evolved …

The 288th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Duel The fighting over Keflavik has been so heavy that what remains of the airfield, currently held by NATO, is unusable. At the same time, the fighting in Europe has placed demands upon available resources that preclude either side sending long-range aircraft to attack or defend Iceland. The fate of Iceland will, therefore, be decided by a decisive surface battle. This scenario is a re-make of a Harpoon Classic scenario from the original GIUK battleset and has been re-made for Harpoon 3 with the consent of AGSI. In the near future, tensions have increased between the Netherlands and Venezuela. The Netherlands sends a small task force to Aruba to "show the flag," and hopefully discourage Venezuela from any aggression, and to gather intelligence. But things may not go as smoothly as planned... (This is another scenario that I think shows how good Harpoon ANW and the HUD-4 are at modeling small battles where both sides only have a dozen or so units. It is not too hard to win, but you have to pay attention to what is going on b…

The 251st NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Last week, we released 120 New scenarios. This week, we return you to our regular programming schedule. INGRESS PROJECT PENINSULA 94 Peninsula 94 is a series of 4 related scenarios (Recon, Ingress, Strike Ops, and Egress) representing different phases of a US multi-carrier battle group attack on the Kola Peninsula. From the Russian perspective, this is the mission the navy has trained for since its beginning: defense of the homeland. These scenarios are related by a common order of battle and a concurrence of mission. Any discrepancies can be attributed to poor bomb damage assessment and bette…

  18. The 54th NEW Harpoon scenario in the last 12 months! Shadow the Boomer After several vicious carrier battles in the Barents Sea and with the ground war stalemated in the Nordic winter, negotiations started to end the war. Both parties observed a cease-fire, which held surprisingly well in the first week. However, NATO feared Putin would make use of the cease-fire to bring his boomers to bastions prepared in the Barentz Sea. USN and Royal Navy hunter-killer subs were sent to stake out Severomorsk and be prepared to shadow SSBNs exiting the harbour. Bearing in mind players love of new scenarios - particularly those based on actual events. I'm surprised no ones mooted the idea of creating a scenario based on the mysterious events surrounding the disappearence of the russian cargo ship Artic Sea. Supposedly taken by Pirates and for which coastguards lost communications with, when the pirates switched off all comms & satellite tracking system - when it entered the busiest shipping lane in the world - namely the Engli…
