Scenario Design & Discussion

A forum for discussion of scenario design for Harpoon 3.

The 290th NEW Harpoon scenario in the last 12 months! 4.0 Ice Picket Congratulations to Bart Gauvin for posting up his very first Harpoon scenario for everyone to enjoy. "Gunner98" is the 17th author to release a new scenario. Feb 14th 1994, Valentines Day. Less than 24 hours ago, Soviet forces struck all across Eastern Europe in a drive to seize the initiative and establish themselves as the dominant force in Europe once and for all. NATO, and particularly the Americans are not well positioned to challenge this sudden attack. There are two US CVBGs in the Persian Gulf area and a third transiting the Indian Ocean and a fourth patrolling near…

The 264th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! LEND-LEASE 1994 The Second Russian Revolution was not the last -- most analysts knew this. The shaky economy the Yeltsin government inherited would not be easily fixed and a people with newly found rights had a tendency to complain and even defy. However, a disenchanted populace was not the major problem. When high-ranking military leaders decided that the new government could not manage the economy and ensure the survival of the Russian Federation, they acted. The Coup of 1994 was much better planned than its predecessor. There were no protests in the streets of Moscow and the propaganda campaign w…

Friends, While playing around with ideas for scenarios, I came up with the following notion...what if China, in return for a lot of oil, sold Mauritania a gob of military equipment...roughly speaking, a squadron of a dozen JF-17s, about half-a-dozen patrol boats and missile boats (Type 62, Type 37, etc.), some SAMs to protect their main airport/airbase, a couple of Y-8 maritime patrol planes, and a healthy supply of stuff that goes boom! when you fire it at people. By 2017, the stuff has arrived, pilots have been trained, etc. So, I'm asking the hive mind, who might Mauritania get into a serious brawl with? Neighbors like Morocco? The E.U. (I guess relations wi…

Just a few quick questions... 1) Am I correct that using this setting means an "attack" like a patrol or a strike does not result in the destruction of a unit but making it change sides when it has taken enough "damage," or does something else happen? And it only works if one is using certain weapons like paratroopers...I think it would count as a database error if one could "board" a ship with Harpoon missiles. 2) How well does this work in ANW 3.10? Or do I need to wait for 3.11 to come out? 3) Could this be used against a submarine? (I'm thinking of scenarios where the idea is to force the submarine to surface to prove it was really in waters it had no…

SPOILER ALERT THE BACKYARD II: FINAL SHOOTOUT The Cold War finally went hot and furious as battles arose around the world. This scenario deals with a final U.S. multi-carrier attack supported by Japanese forces in the Western Pacific. The U.S. forces have neutralized all but one of the Soviet fortresses in the theatre. Now it is time to finish the job. This scenario was originally written by Ralf Koelbach for Harpoon Classic Commanders Edition and has been re-made for Harpoon3 and the PlayersDB with the consent of the author. But beware, the Soviets have reinforced their last bastion to the utmost. For best results, this scenario should be played with both…

I wrote it long ago for Harpoon 2, but could not make it as large as I liked because of H2´s performance problems. These problems have gone Though the scen is really large, it should run fast enough on modern PC´s. While it was two-sided back then I have rewritten it as US only,…

The 28th NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! In Every Clime and Place The war between the CIS and NATO has been raging for three weeks with the CIS gaining the upper hand with their swift conquest of the nations surrounding the Norwegian Sea. Gaining access to the Atlantic in this manner, many of their hunter-killer submarine groups have been able to sortie thus harassing NATO convoys and wreaking havoc with NATO's wartime plans. SACEur has had enough and finally convinces the USN to launch an amphibious invasion of Norway to stop the flow of subs that are sinking his supplies! In order to pull off such a daring invasion, a CVBG is pulled from es…

In the near future, tensions have increased between Greece and Albania. Greek ships must escort a convoy to Dubrovnik. (This is not a very difficult scenario to win, although you have to keep an eye open for the bad guys--you can lose easily enough if you get careless--and there are a lot of innocent bystanders in the area. Again, it might be a good scenario for HC players who want to give H3 a try.) Image: Greek frigate HS Spetsai, F-453 (Source: http://www.navy.mil/management/photodb/photos…

Here's an excellent AAR. It is reprinted here with permission of the author: I tried Power Sweep from the NATO side. As I started the game, I got a passive sonar contact from my brit SSN that was behaving as a submarine; it course was quickly plotted to be right towards me so I calculated intercept time at 2 hours and started moving Kobben at 12 knots at periscope depth to cover the area left by my SSN. Two hours later the sub, now confirmed as Victor was at 6nm and two 81 knot torpedo's 'flew' towards it. destruction was instant w/o any chance of counterfire! I next moved the Brit SSN at 20 knots (it would not go to Flank) to cover the Norwegian Ko…

The 42nd NEW Harpoon scenario of the year! Carrier Exercise Halfway through 2008, Europe started to realize that the Asian nations' sustained economic growth would eventually lead to a strong new powerhouse. Asian countries already built or bought several very effective carriers and, with China laying down both a 45000 ton and a 96000 ton aircraft carrier, Europe decided that carriers would become critical in the future. While England's 2 new carriers are still years away, the time was ripe for some serious exercise. This scenario has been designed for play with any combination of 1 to 4 players. Author: Freek Schepers With over 320,0…

  16. Quick question... Is there any way to set a ship in a scenario as being "damaged"--out of fuel, with 50% damage, etc.? I can edit the weapons down to the bullet, pretty much, with the Logistics menu, but I don't see anything to let me edit the amount of fuel a ship has, its damage percentage, etc. Any way to do this, short of creating a custom database with a damaged version of the ship? Thanks. (I suppose the other option for a disabled ship is to make it its own side, unplayable by a human player, and just give it orders that will make it act as if it is disabled--low speed, maybe setting a Nav zone all around it that it cannot penetrate, etc.--but I don't kn…

  18. REMAIN CALM: #3 HEAT WAVE The 42nd new scenario of the year! New World Order Battleset #3: Algerian Conflict In July 1994, the unrest in Algeria that had been simmering for years finally exploded into a major armed conflict. The terror campaign that had been carried out by Islamic extremists since the early 1990s, reached an awful crescendo when they finally seized power in the country. Algerian government forces, demoralized and fearful of repercussions against their families, lay down their arms and capitulated to the rebel army by August 1994. It did not take long for the new Islamic government to gain support from Iran and Libya for its anti-Weste…
