Hey guys, just starting out with Harpoon 5, quick fundamental question regarding how to read the weapon info: Example: Arleigh Burke Flight III F&A(8)4 fwd & (8)8 aft Mk41 VLS w/9 msls total, typical loadout 38 SM2MR, 6 SM3 Blk IA/IB, 16 SM6, 32 ESSM, 4 VL ASROC, 24 Tactical Tomahawk//F/2A 3 SPG-62 I read this as the MK41 VLS can fire from Front with 4 mounts each having 8 tubes, and/or the Aft with 8 mounts each having 8 tubes...but what does "w/9msls total" mean? Does it mean each turn 9 missiles can shoot total from the Front and/or Aft? thanks in advance,

A correct understanding of Air Intercept Radars with inherent Surface Search capabilities under the Smarter (and Simpler) Radar rules found on the Admiralty Trilogy yahoo group. So in summary, for the UK Blue Fox, I can utilize, separately, the Air Intercept and Surface Search capabilities per the High Tide Data Annex as the Air Intercept data is identical for the Blue Fox in both the "Smarter Radar" and High Tide while the Surface Search data is apparently missing from "Smarter Radar".

Hello all from Windsor in the UK. I have a copy of Harpoon 4.1 and High Tide but never gotten round to playing it. The release of Harpoon V gives me the nudge to really give it a go. I've ordered the print books from wargame vault and downloaded the quickstart. Does anybody have any general advice for a sensible way to go about learning the game? In my experiments in the past, keeping track of unit locations and separation was a bit of a faff, do people recommend going straight to SimPlot 2 for that? TIA for your suggestions, Windscale.

In anticipation of running Dave Schueler's "Send In The Marines" from HNR2003, I am trying to get up to speed on LHA/VSTOL Flight Operations. I am using the AV-8B II data found in the HNR2003 and I would truely appreciate it if someone took a look at my numbers and planning process. I am so thankful that the Harpoon V world continues to make improvements, corrections, and enhancements to the rules and data books. Is there any errata available that would show what, specifically, the Jan 8th, 2021 changes were for each of the Harpoon V publications? That would make it a lot easier to fix platform sheets that may have an error on them, identify sections of the rules that perhaps I've been playing incorrectly, and digest new information or rules. At the last minute I was able to get time off from work and drive down to Lancaster, PA for the Cold Wars 2019 convention. There I met Larry Bond, Chris Carlson, Mike Harris, et al. I played Dawn of the Battleship with them on Friday, and Dance of the Vampires (abridged) on Saturday. Saturday they also gave a presentation on the Chinese navy and a closer look at the proposed air defense rule changes for H4.2. Set up - An A-6E launches 2 Harpoon IC at a Kara class Soviet CG. The Harpoon will reach the Kara in 5 segments (2.5 minutes). The Kara detected it and rolled poorly on the Combat System Reaction table getting a total reaction time of 6 segments. So, the Harpoon will reach the Kara before the Kara can react with its Osa-M or Shtorm SAM systems. The Kara is broadside to the incoming Harpoons and, as such, has a 76mm gun and at least one 30mm CIWS that can shoot at the Harpoons. The Kara's MR-600 3D radar saw the Harpoons at launch, the MPZ-301 LAS radar for the Osa-M, the 4R60 Grom radar for the Shtorm, the MR-105 director for the 76mm, and the MR-123 director for…

Last night I played a scenario where an Arleigh Burke DDG is attacked by SS-N-22 missiles fired from a Sovremenny DDG. The Sov had Helix AEW support but the Burke had no copter on board, and so detection of inbound missiles was limited to the SPY-1 radar. Here was the problem. After the 1st move phase of an Engagement Turn the Sunburns were just outside the radar horizon of 24 nm and are still undetected. In the 2nd move phase the missiles are 6.9 nm closer. But, since the ship had no prior detection of the missiles, the Burke cannot see or fire on them in the 2nd fire phase, right? I created a simple plotter (SimPlot) program that automates the process of moving units on a simple x,y coordinate system. The objective is to get myself to play H4 paper rules more often by eliminating the problems of graph paper or Neptune's Cat attacks for tabletop games. SimPlot will track time and motion of units. It will also provide range and bearing info to other units. Units can automatically follow other units that are selected as "targets." Unit movement tracks and times can be displayed in case you want to see where you have been. How about a few screenies? I am not well versed in helicopter ASW operations. I am interested in learning more about how to implement such things in H4.1. So, I have a few questions if anyone knows the answers. 1) During a Tactical Turn, are sonobuoys dropped before or after the helo moves? Although it is not usable for another Tac Turn, the location may be important if the helo and sub are moving in opposite directions. Every inch might count. 2) Are sonobuoys sensitive enough to classify targets? 3) I saw some good info in the HCE forum covering aircraft ASW ops, but I don't know if it's the same for helos. Hi All, This pod (ALQ-248 AOEW ES pod) starting in 2021 can be loaded onto an MH-60R but the stat line doesn't give any kind of clutter value it just says "Detects location and course of TARH msls? Possibly create false targets". How should I interpret this game play wise? Should it be able to detect incoming TARH's at whatever the radar horizon is? Can I use it to make a false signature of say a B size ship for example? Thank you all for you help in advance btw. Really appreciate this community!

Today's attack consisted on a strike against a suspected enemy brigade hq. 2x Jaguar GR.1, each loaded with 2x BL175 CBU and 2x Mk82 500 lb bombs. Target an enemy brigade headquarters, an assortment of bermed tentage and a handful of vehicles, all cammied up. I gave the HQ the equivilent of a reveted aircraft position...15DP. Defense were 2x Bofors 40mm/L70 (without RA) and a SA-7 Strela Team. Began with IP 8nm from suspected HQ. At range of 1.7nm HQ spotted. Ground forces also spot the attacking aircraft. In accounting for all the data for Send In The Marines, Harpoon Naval Review 2003, lists the LHA, LPD, LSD, CG, DDG, SSN, AH-1W, AV-8B II. I located the CH-53E on page B24 of the H4.1 Data Annex and the B-52G on page B21 of the H4 Data Annex. After reviewing those two annexes, and HNR 2003, 2000, and 1997, I have not been able to find the data on a CH-46E or UH-1N. Can anyone refer me to the appropriate annex, perhaps I even missed it in one of the pubs that I have looked. Also, would there be a problem with using 4.0 data on an aircraft not found in the 4.1 data annex? Thanks, Pete
