Fortress Kevlavik - The Russians

A scenario for Harpoon Classic

This scenario derives from a discussion at Matrix Forum regarding the original version. In those days scenarios were mostly written for two sides playable thus creating the balance problem.

Since this old GIUK 6.0 scen has always been one of my favourites I´ve written two modified versions - one focusing on the Soviet side, the other one on the Nato side.

This one is designed to be played from the Soviet side.

Will you break through Nato's defenses and unload your troops near Kevlavik?

Have fun!

Ralf

Brad was playing this today and it sounded like fun so I took it for a spin.

The good news is that I achieved total victory in 7 hours and 17 minutes of game time. The bad news is that NATO took my poor amphibious group totally by surprise which cost me a few good escorts. Had I not undertaken a series of audacious (thanks Brains) raids there is little doubt I would have lost. Playing this one fair will get your Amphibs sunk, or so it seems.

Despite the victory I continued on to Keflavik, not knowing what other surprises Ralf had in store via the NATO forces. The amphibs made it safely but two more escorts and a first-line SSN were lost in the process.

It was a costly battle for both sides but I won, yay!

Thanks Ralf for an excellent re-make B) .

Glad that Brad and you had a good time. I´ll soon release the Nato version.

[spoilers apply!]

I found that my Flankers (flying out of Orland) did not have sufficient endurance on-station over the phibgru (which was pretty close to the eastern coast of Greenland) to be able to protect the group. Even when configured for LR Air-toAir.

By the time they got out there, they were already pretty low on fuel and could not hang around long enough or use military/afterburner in air combat, to make a difference.

When the Minsk was available, however, and it was sited a little closer to Jan Mayen, the combination of Yak-38 Forgers and low-endurance Flankers was just enough to repel most attacks or at least sacrifice my escorts and save the phibs.

Tony was able to achieve victory without having the Minsk at his disposal, so kudos to him! B)

Variable starting points. Especially critical in this scen, yes.

Yes, he won it using clever tactics.

Thanks again for playing it.

Hmmn. I played through it, and totally wiped out the entire Nato force, and their bases (first the uk bases, then keflavik, then the nato CVH group), and only lost 10 aircraft, most of which were migs sacrificed to get a bomber wing away safely. The Minsk group barely moved towards Iceland, their missiles helped use up some of the Nato groups missiles, but that was it. They didn't come under any kind of attack at all.

I guess I just got lucky.

I reloaded the scenario, to do some testing, and immediately the Minsk group came under fire via torps, I lost 2 ships, and I also had one of my subs make contact on the nato group. Neither of those things happened in the first playthrough. I'm also about to be attacked by a nato Phantom group and some harpoons, which also didn't happen in the first place.

If all that had happened in my first playthrough, it would have been much more interesting. I'm guessing I got lucky/unlucky (depending on how you look at it) with variable locations and nato not making proper contact.

Yes, much depends on the 'variable start points' and 'chance of appearing'. The first time out, I did not have the Minsk and my phibgru was west of Jan Mayen, too far to make effective use of the Flankers out of Norway. I was eaten alive by NATO antiship missile attacks.
