Another newbie with a question...

Featured Replies

Hello all! It's nice to finally come across some fellow people who have an interest in the Harpoon System. I've been an owner of the rules for a couple of years and although I've thumbed through them, I've never actually had an opportunity to dive right in (pun intended). But reading all of these AARs and such, I'm really able to now visualize how some of the rules actually interact with each other and I'm excited to really get myself involved.

I do have a few questions though, pertaining to the Unification Project I've heard mentioned a few times. Is there eventually going to be one solid volume of Data Annexes detailing "The Navies of the World" from 1900 to Present? Is the data for the various weapon systems going to be completely unified. I suppose this question comes from the fact that I've noticed that the guns in Harpoon have two range bands, but in Command at Sea, they're split up into four. Also, is there going to be in existence a Ship Form one could use to plug the data into from any era, as the ships forms right now still coincide with the individual systems.

I do have North Atlantic Navies on it's way as we speak and maybe after perusing through the contents, these questions will be answered better, but I'm impatient. ;)

I'm sure as I delve deeper more questions will surface, but this was the big one I had at the moment.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Cindel76, Welcome.

Hopefully someone close to the unification project will be able to chime with a detailed explanation other than my interpretation which is each of the three era games, Fear God and Dread Not, Command at Sea, and Harpoon, will remain but their respective data will be "unified" across the board, so that the same procedure for determining damage points and resolving combat will be the same for all three eras/titles.

Get out there and play already!

I hope your not getting hung up on the fact there may be new stats or a new system on the way, and thats standing in your way of using the system you already have. Whether that be Harpoon or Command at Sea.

From what i have read here the new system may be months/years away.

Even when it comes out, i plan to stick to my H4.1. I still have so many encounters i want to run through.

Post away Cindel, with any thoughts or questions you may have.

No, that's not it. I just haven't gotten too far into it yet because either I haven't had the time, or as I said earlier, I haven't been around too many fellow players. This is definitely the place to be, it looks. :)

One other question that does spring to mind is reference material. What are some reliable sources you all use to obtain data to add new units and such? I'm not looking for the books published by the companies that have the "Military equipment is awesome and cool!" childlike mentality, if you know what I mean. You know, the ones filled with the flashy pictures and graphics that don't really give you much information. Did that sound harsh? :(

I'd like information so I can effectively flesh out game data for things like the F-86 and MiG-15. Plus, I'd love to build an extensive annex for older AAA weapons. I know eras like Korea and Vietnam offer little in the realm of naval action, but the air aspect of this system equally fascinates me as well and I've love to have information regarding these these two specific time periods. Any suggestions?

some sites have pdfs of equipment data. Is this what you mean? Mostly ships and planes though, not normally AAA equipemnt. I'm interested in any other answers though.

I think Pete has a good handle on the unification project. My position as well it outside the core paper people but I do see a number of things fly by periodically.

I don't think you'll see a single 20th + 21st Century data annex and a single ruleset to rule them all. What you will have at least some ability to do is pit a CG Ticonderoga against the Great White Fleet and have rules that accomodate your desire. At present, pre-unification, you would have to translate both rules and platform data. Post unification you'll already have largely compatible data and rules.

I still don't think that will mean you see a single ship data sheet that covers more than a century of warfare and the CG Ticonderoga annex entry won't have quite the right information to fit CaS rules to a tee. But once again, it'll be all so much easier to interpret together and be familiar with all of the games by using even one of them. That'll leave us players with the still herculean task of tactics and strategy but reducing the administrative burden should be a tremendous boon to play.
