Venezuela displays military strength

Featured Replies

From Reuters, printed in today's San Diego Union Tribune:

LA ORCHILA, Venezuela - Venezuela test-fired missiles in the Caribbean Sea yesterday in a display of military strength at a time of tense realations between Washington and leftist President Hugo Chavez.

Five Russian Sukhoi fighter jets swooped over the military base on the island of La Orchila, dropping a half-ton bomb and firing a KH-59 missile at a seaborne target. A patrol boat fired an Otomat surface-to-surface missile at the same target.

So is Hugo trying to scare his neighbours again, or what? Even he can't believe the Americans would be impressed, can he?

Although you never know with a squirrel like Chavez, hasn't he been having some hassles with the Colombians recently? It could be that this was for their benefit.

The most recent Naval Sitrep has an article Just In Case by Larry Bond which briefly discusses the current dynamic between Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador, and then goes on to identify the various current naval and air unit types in H4.1 terms for the three potential belligerents.

Yeah, I thought I remembered something to that effect.

Colombia launched an airstrike against a FARC leader in Ecuador. Almost started a war.

Yeah, that was it. I thought Venezuela was in the mix someplace as well. Or maybe someone was just speculating on Chavez' potential involvement.
