September 18, 201411 yr The very impressive missile strike (starting around 1:10) appears to have been an SS-N-12 from the cruiser Varyag (the first hit) and possibly an SS-N-22 from the destroyer Bystryy (approaching almost directly astern). Thoughts?
September 19, 201411 yr Author I perceive the first hit as a missile carrying sub-munitions. Why would you think that?
September 19, 201411 yr Little or not hull damage on the first impact, and succession of small explosions in the target extreme far (right of the image) of the impact point (impacto point is left of the image, I dont see bow or stern in the target)
September 19, 201411 yr Author Its a big, bulky missile and most of its fuselage and empennages (wings, inlet, external rockets) are shed on impact. Also, the impact is a shallow one, sorta of a glancing blow. A lot of what you are seeing are pieces of the missile and hull flying off in multiple directions. If you watch the vid in slow motion, you will see the missile (or what is left of it, or what it is pushing aside as it goes) emerge on the far side at around the 1:23 mark, directly across from its impact point. This happens just as the second missile (without smoke trail) impacts the stern (or bow, as the case may be).
September 25, 201411 yr Author The target ship was apparently the decommissioned Project 688A barracks ship Vega. Standard displacement 2500 tons.
