Scenario for HCE/Westpac: Foxes in the Henhouse

Featured Replies

Now that HCE has been released, I have several under-construction-scenarios on the backburners that are being dusted off and polished up for release.

This one, 'Foxes in the Henhouse', is for play by BLUE in the Westpac Battleset.

Its an early Cold War era scenario that pits a pair of US Navy Skipjack class SSNs against a trio of Soviet HENS submarines, a Hotel class SSBN, Echo class SSGN and November class SSN (which began deploying in the early 1960s), before they can deploy into their patrol zones.

Please take it for a spin and let me know if you have problems, issues, thoughts, opinions, whatever.

The scenario is NOT ready for release, so please do not distribute it.

Got a chance to give this one a run last night. I never made contact before having one skipjack sunk and the game ending in a draw. I'm gonna have to say the time may be a bit too short (never really got to run a search pattern), and the blue units aren't up to the task. I will give it another try tonight and see if I get different results.

Thanks, Akula. I will definitely look at the time limit.

As for the Blue units not being up to the task, this is what intrigued me to create the scenario. It is arguable that this period was the only time when the Soviets had the edge on the US in submarine technology. It is notable that all of the submarine classes in this scenario appeared on the scene at more or less the same time (late 1950s to early 1960s). ;)

Hello Brad,

ok, finally gave it a try under B 32.

Revised version of this scenario attached. I tried it and was able to achieve minimum victory before being snagged by a Bear F.

maybe I was lucky, but I won rather easy. Driving my subs at creep speed with 5 knots through the strait, I got first the November and then the Echo I, thus achieving minimum Victory Conditions. My subs obviously made contact first; I fired two torps at each of the red subs, one hitting and sinking the target.

Now I go on for total victory, searching for the Boomer....

Ralf

Hello,

just got the boomer, too. It was utterly unaware and hit by all three torps I fired at it. So - total victory!

Maybe these Soviet subs came in too fast? I just ket my Skipjacks creeping on passive sonar and the three subs came in dumb.

Thanks, Ralf. You've narrowed the issues for me in this scenario. My first build(s) had the Soviets moving their boats slowly, and hence it was very hard (perhaps too hard) for the Americans to hear them.

The latest build might have the Soviets moving too quickly, and therefore (due to crappy sonar all round), the Americans typically hear them first.

First to hear is first to win in this era of submarine warfare, it seems.
