Mark, leave Mr Hum alone. Such a man is only able to copy others, he doesn't bring anything original. He's happy with his Poorly Designed Bulls..t? Great for him, let's keeping him building sand castles in his sandbox with his associated.

True, but I think Herman doesn't realize I'm really not talking to him. Every time he slams on the HUD-4, I will just say, "Well, that's your opinion and you have a right to it; I'm just saying people should try it out for themselves and make up their own minds." So I'm just planting the seed of "Hmm...maybe I should try the HUD-4," which is really all one can do--if people try it and like it, they will use it, and probably nothing Herman says will matter very much. If they don't like it, nothing I say about it will matter very much. The issue is simply getting them to see the HUD-4 as an option, getting them interested in trying it out, etc. I'm guessing that most people who try the HUD-4 will like it enough to see it as a good option and they will keep using it. They may still use the PDB for some scenarios, also, but at least now they will use the HUD-4, too.

Jeez, he just doesn't give up, does he? :)

On the bright side, some good may come out of this. There's no way to tell if Herman is being honest about anything related to the HUD-4. Personally, I do not trust him to be honest. But maybe there are issues with the HUD-4 that need to be identified. I'm hoping I can get more people to try out the HUD-4 and, if there are problems, those problems will be identified here on harpgamer so Gunny can deal with them. Better ten or twenty sets of eyes looking for problems then just one or two, after all--Gunny can't fix what he doesn't know about.

While I doubt it will make much difference, I finally told Herman to put up or shut up, on CombatSim. :) And while I have no intention of being rude (that is how one gets banned, after all), I am going to be relentless.

If he makes an honest, good faith effort to offer constructive criticism (and I know that would surprise some people) and says, "Hey, I tried this scenario and this platform did not work, please let the database editor know," I'll pass the information on to Gunny. But if he just says "Don't try the HUD-4," I'm going to call him on it. He has a right to like or not like the HUD-4. He has a right to say "I don't have time to help." But he does not have a right to interfere with other people enjoying it or making it better.

I think one important factor to promote the use of HUD4, is to create a sorts of review about it (what it is, what it does, what units are in it, the benefits of using it, etc.). I remember Taitennek was working to do something along the lines, but by looking at the state of his site, I think he must be busy with real world chores. Then we need to start creating new scenarios for it and resume hosting multiplayer sessions every two weeks or every month or so. I have been away from active H3:ANW gaming for a while now, but I often check the Harpoon's forum over Matrix Games only to get depressed at the little (or none) improvement done to the game by AGSI.

If the default scenarios and battlesets that come with the stock game would be converted for the HUD4, then I think releasing the official 3.11 update with these updated scenario files and with the updated HUD4 db as a default selection, then revitalizing the H3 community could be a matter of doing the right PR job in the forums so that other fellow Harpooners can migrate their scenarios and try new ones for the HUD4.

Am I dreaming? Maybe... but if the game is able to hold its own without serious bugs, both in single and multiplayer, and the H3:ANW is stable enough to use for scenario authoring, then perhaps the latest inactivity of the community would start to be a thing of the past.

cheers all, and a big thank you to everyone involved in not letting Harpoon die.

Hi evaamo, your ideas are interesting. I need to explain some points however:

-all original scens are being converted from HUD3 to HUD4, it's a big process that consumes a lot of time, since the author of DB changed.

-Taitennek website will be updated when 3.11 comes out.

Regards,

FG

Let's dial back the chatter on personalities and their manias, please, and just focus on the game.

Those people are who they are, but the game can be whatever you want it to be.

Brad: Didn't mean to get anything started, don't worry ;-)

Francois: Yeah I'm aware of Darren's passing, sadly. On the other hand I'm glad his legacy is in good hands now, since I remember you as a responsible fellow Harpooner since the hhq days ;-).

I think migrating all the stock scenarios to the HUD4 will greatly improve the actual state of the game and will somehow reduce the complexity for newcomers who want to start developing new ones... congratulations on this undertaking... must be incredibly time consuming! Good to hear about Taitennek as well.

Thank you for all your work!

cheers

No worries. My comments weren't directed at anyone in particular, and certainly not anything you had said.

But we established this site to avoid the flame wars and underhandedness, and we will certainly not permit those kinds of people to propagate their personal misery around here.

Great! Let us hope it stays this way ... the community has seen enough already, I agree.

cheers

Another thing that might be done is to post a list of actual bugs and errors and the status on them. As much as I hate to admit it, Mr. Hum does sometimes spot real errors that need to be addressed. He can then use this as "proof" that the HUD-4 is terrible, bug-infested, etc. He is always going to say that, of course, but if there was a list of known bugs and errors, and status on them, it would demonstrate to OTHERS that there is an ongoing effort to make the HUD-4 as good as it can be. It might also encourage people to use the HUD-4 to test scenarios, find and report additional bugs, if there are any, which will ultimately lead to the database being improved.

He was always very good at playtesting and finding bugs, and was a great help in this respect. This was always openly acknowledged and well known. He will claim that he was banned from HG for bug lists but nothing could be further from the truth.

Mark, you've quickly discovered that there is no reasoning with this person. We have zero interest in being associated with what is a pervasively negative and destructive crusade.

As I said earlier, folks are free to talk about and promote HUD4 here as you wish, but no more chatter about the PDB machination, please. You don't need the latter to do the former.

That is the purpose of the HUD4\Requests/Issues forum. We need to get Gunny a way to more easily track what has been addressed though, especially since we lost the post indicators in the forum software upgrade (not that some people were using them ).

I use the term Issue since one person's bug is another person's range off by 0.0001nm so who cares. In either case it is still an Issue.

Absolutely, and I apologize for griping about him as much as I did--my only excuse is that parts of this experience have been--how shall I say it?--very frustrating. :)

Just a quick update...I finally got tired of Herman's behavior on CombatSim and Armchair General and reported him to the moderators. Fortunately, he is so rude and foul a lot of the time that he sabotages himself. (The errors that he spots are worth reporting. But the way he does it is counter-productive.) I figure he'll either get his wrists slapped and stay away from the HUD-4 thread or get himself banned, especially if he lips off to the moderators after they contact him. I get the impression he has gotten himself banned from forums that way on more than one occasion. :) Well, we will see what happens. If worst comes to worst, I can always leave those forums behind and rely on other forums like Facebook to let people know about new scenarios, etc.
