Hmm.... I wonder if these replace the SU33 or will become part of a mixed airwing. I guess the Su33s are a bit long in the tooth now. Quote
broncepulido Posted March 1, 2012 Report Posted March 1, 2012 The original idea is replacement. Quote
CV32 Posted March 1, 2012 Author Report Posted March 1, 2012 There are, in some ways, parallels to be drawn here with the F-14/F/A-18 story in the US Navy. In other words, a single purpose (for the most part) fleet air defense fighter - very capable in its own right - pitted against a multi-role jet that is probably not as good overall - at least in raw performance - but perhaps a little more flexible in a wider variety of missions and more capable of modernization and upgrade. Then there is also more than a little piggybacking on the Indian Navy order. Quote

I think Sukhoi were proposing an updated SU-33 using SU-35 avionics etc.... which I guess might compete with the latest MiG 29K...... however I agree that the production run of MiG 29K for India must be a driving factor..... What next!!! the return of the Su25K Quote

What next!!! the return of the Su25K Su-25UTG, it was never an attack plane, just a trainer. Even in the 90s the 29K was more multirole than the Su-33 but MiG was out of favor when the USSR fell. Given the limitations of STOBAR it's possibly the better plane too. Quote

As for STOBAR, yes I remember reading that India was offered the SU-33...but space was a premium on the Gorshkov rebuild and the MiG took up less space than the Sukhoi. Quote

What next!!! the return of the Su25K They can't compete with MiG, they're under the same roof, one big family, sharing engineers, assembly plants, etc The Russian government has had them running as one unit (Mig and Sukhoi) for quite a few years now iirc Quote
