April 15, 201115 yr A brief intro to the licensing is that most wikicommons materials fall under... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tex...nported_License which stipulates linking to the license text as well as adhering to licensing requests of the author (which are usually non-existent). USA goverment created works should be credited but use of such photos is pretty free of contention thankfully. So the short answer is no, not everything on the wikicommons family of sites can be used without attribution and some items will not be able to be used even with attribution if the author has stipulated relevant restrictions.
April 15, 201115 yr ... not everything on the wikicommons family of sites can be used without attribution and some items will not be able to be used even with attribution if the author has stipulated relevant restrictions. Ain't that the truth. This is a bigger issue than I think most folks probably realize. Hence I spend most of my time concentrating on the content of the DB rather than the pretty pics.
April 15, 201115 yr Author Ah, okay didn't realize that, I'll have to look into them then and post more along with each image. All the images above are stored and linked directly from wiki commons. There is severe weather coming through St Louis though so I may have to get off of here in a bit though. That sucks though, I bet most of them will be copyrighted. I can't really get any of those programs and mess with the images myself, because my computer is very old and running Windows 2000. Even programs like GIMP run horribly slow and are troublesome. I'll do more in a bit there are tornados on the ground up here.
April 16, 201115 yr I'll start a thread linking to them, maybe someone will be able to convert them. If you are running a recent version of Windows, the Paint program can convert among a number of the common formats.
April 16, 201115 yr If you need to mass-convert a couple dozen or hundreds of images, I'd recommend taking a look at ImageMagick. Not sure how to use it on Windows though. On Linux I often use short scripts like $ for image in *.bmp > do > new=$( echo $image | awk -F. '{ print $1F}' > convert $image ${new}.jpg > done This example converts all the bmp images in the current directory to jpg files, saving a ton of space.

Well it is rather enjoyable looking at all the cool vehicles and ships. Sorry, my computer really sucks and this is all I can do, if I tried to convert and resize them all it would take me an eternity compared to someone who can support better software.

Does that mean you guys can use the image? Sorry I am kind of dumb when it comes to copyright law and I don't like them much. Edit: I think I kind of understand, you can use some of them but its a pain? Edit2: For the most part I'm trying to stick with vessels and craft that would be relevant in a modern conflict, I hope it helps.
